Uhh, dude, we are at the 'long run' right now. Shit has already strted hitting the fan, we're all just so protected by contrived media we can't see it unless we stand up and look for ourselves.

Last week, the biggest international meeting in the history of the world happened. Do you know about it? Did you know how 25 000 people wanted to attend but were shut out? That there were more representative from major corporations there than people from Non Governmental Organizations? That no deal was reached but they made some useless scrap of nothing and claimed it was the deal everyone was looking for?

By big business, ABSOLUTELY it's a conspiracy. But this is not a theory, it's documented in hundreds of different places. Which just goes to show how people have been distracted from it.

By the industry that has been built on the economic systems now threatened by the changes our system will have to make over the next 20 years? Absolutely.

By the economists that fail to realize that green power will be just as profitable as coal and gas are now? Absolutely.

The world is not how it seems on tv, it's getting fucked, right now.

Doing grand, life steadily improves, communication improves, inderdependency of nations helps prevent wars, you can travel from one country to another without being shot, a lot of us live longer, have good healthcare, good food, education. Doubtless eventually this state will spread to more people as time goes on. Once we have enough stuff for everyone I would expect to see people getting along a lot better because there's no longer any reason to kill each other.

As a Canadian - a member of one of the blockade countries I have to say, that Copenhagen was a stunning example of human greed overcoming noble ideas.

We had developed nations saying "we're not cutting emissions so that developing nations can fill that gap AND paying those developing nations to take our jobs"

We also had developing nations saying "You owe us you richie rich first world nations, pay up sucka".

I cannot claim to know how to solve the world's problems, I grew up in a rich country that practically breeds apathy into it's fat and overindulged citizens. It does seem to me that people are more likely to give up something if they see others sacrificing also.

China, brazil et al will never get the rich first world to agree to economic pain to benefit China and Brazil, unless there is also evidence that those countries too are sacrificing.

In terms of other problems in the world, humans are a remarkably able species, the optomists amongst us always win in the end. I think we can fix our problems, we will then all become so rich that we no longer care, and will live in a world that is so expensive that we will no longer breed enough people to replace our numbers (look at birthrates in developed nations, then we will collapse and start the cycle anew, or be wiped out by an asteroid.

I'm probably the only person who things Star Trek is a fairly likely future for earth. Seriously folks, we really aren't doing bad. If you think war on terror and 'climate change' are that horrible then take a look at our society 500, 1000 or 3000 years back when diseases wiped out half continents, farmers were completely opressed and wars were an everyday business for pretty much everyone on the planet. We have definitely made improvement and are continueing to do so. Global warming, if we assume the worst case is completely true, is still only a temporary problem as we will be able to master bigger energy sources in the future.

Star trek is a bit weird, a lot of it doesn't make sense.

The Culture I think is more probable, a lot of civilisations blow themselves up, some don't and end up at the point where there are more than enough resources to go around and so people don't fight for things simply because they only have to ask.

people are generally good and we have to try to become what we are not. in the "are we doomed" poll... 50/50.
we will continue downwards till a major non-selfish thing happens, like the cure for aids. then everyone will get laid and we will all mellow out and we will all be just fine towards eachother.

Anyway, really? "all of my bashing"? I post so rarely now a days and even before i didnt really organize any real scalding hatred towards any subject in particular. Im mostly just light heartedly messing with everyone, i dont take things seriously around here, dont know why everyone seems to. Its a website for video games. Also god damn you for making me respond to all this, ive promised myself i wouldnt make it to 10K post around here.

Since we're messing around anyways and are vaguely on the topic of newspaper comics, while I do enjoy Calvin and Hobbes, you can't forget the greatness of Bloom County. It's where my interest in Cold War politics came from!
