I haven't had much multiplayer experience. MU Online, SWTOR, some shooters. Now I'm playing Demon's Souls (thanks to the kindness of a stranger, by the way), which is multiplayer lite as I understand it. No names, no chatting, no trading, no interaction of any kind - all you do is read messages of varying obliqueness left from other players scribbled on the ground (and write some in turn). You can glimpse other players as phantoms now and then, but that's about it. Social interaction is mostly funneled into cryptic messages you choose to believe or not.

So far it's been one of the most positive multiplayer experiences I've ever had. I started out mistrustful of everything I read (attack this, you need to be this levelled to do that, jump off here) and learned to be more trustful of hints and advice from strangers since. I've blindly jumped off cliffs and ledges because some random passerby scribbled "treasure ahead", and it's always been true - I've also refrained from doing the same in other places because of "it's just a fall". Other players mark the spot where it's safe to stand while you time your sprints through dragon-infested land. Always spot-on. And when you get ill advice, there's always a message of "liar" scribbled next to it.

So generally speaking I'm learning to trust players more and more because of the general good will I've experienced in just a few days of playing. The experience is obviously helped by the fact all messages are pre-rendered and there's no chatting, so worst case scenario someone politely states something that's not true. But even then for every one of these there're so much more stating the truth and correcting liars. It's really quite a refreshing experience from the grammatically horrid, insult-prone, noob-endangered multiplayer I'm used to. Like, wow, so many nice people out there, taking their time to help out just because.

Arriving to the point of the thread (TL;DR), have your experiences with multiplayer been positive, negative or just meh? Care to elaborate if you want.

My experiences have generally been negative(in general, not to any specific game). Don't get me wrong, there are a ton of great people and experiences, but there is also a huge slog of forgettable or offensive bullshit to get there. It's even mostly negative when I play multiplayer with my wife, who hits me when I ninja her loot. <.<

I've made a number of friends when I rented Borderlands 2, and aside from the occasional high-pitched 11 year old, I've found multiplayer chat to be generally positive.

I find Co-Op games, Racing games, & nice online games to be the best place to fill out spaces on your friend list.

Mine varies. Most MMOs have nice people while games like BF3 and GTA:O suck.

Wow was the pure example of meh. Most guilds only recruited to increase their size. For one character I did find an active guild but got kicked out after I stopped playing.

SWTOR has had the best. I joined an all Jedi guild at level 15 and everyone in it was nice. Some guy gave me great armor that was terrible to him, but god-like to me. Our guildmaster was an awesome guy. I regret deleting that character but I did a jedi guardian who focused on damage so I sucked.

Bad is Battlefield 3. Me and my friend played a game of metro conquest and the enemy had us locked down at our spawn. Me and my friend decided all was lost and just started dicking around by sniping instead of trying to push objectives. After ten minutes of this our squadmate plugs in his mike and rants for another ten minutes on how we suck at this game and then shoots us, which does nothing as we were not playing hardcore. Finally to shut his ass up I went assault class and took two objectives and got twenty kills before being taken out by a sniper. Shut him up pretty quick.

I could do GTA:O but that would be another page of content.

I mostly play fighting games online . And for the most part it's positive . For every " you suck , quit spaming ", i get 3 " good games" or " sick [ insert character here ] or "nice set ups".

It doesn't hurt that i'm not bad at the games.

SWTOR was great with me too, I liked the insta-teaming for missions and parting ways in friendly terms once they were done.

Meh, there's positive and there's negative out there.

I've had amazing experiences with absolute strangers in TF2, Call of Duty, Halo, Left 4 Dead, Killzone, Gears of War, etc. I've also had some incredibly crappy experiences in all those same games. People are people, some people are jerks, some people aren't. The jerk to decent person ratio in every game (or at least every big popular game) are about the same, so your experiences with how much you enjoy multiplayer really depend on how hung up on things you get, and how easily you find the mute button.

I've mentioned this before, but Journey.

The positive feeling of having another player along for the game doesn't really count, since it's basically impossible to harm another player. However, what does count is that I've had people (strangers) send me thank you messages after I've given them the white-cloak-guided-tour of the game.

Also, I had a good experience with Planetside 2. (It's a MMO/shooter. Think Battlefield but 10x as big with hundreds of players on a single server.) I actually ended up joining an 'outfit' (read: clan or guild) which is something I've never done in any other game. Most of the guys were friendly and everyone seemed to understand that we were all there for a good time. It was pretty awesome taking part in semi-coordinated operations. The only negative aspect was the constant bitching about mechanical balance and lag.

As for my multiplayer experiences as a whole? Hard to say. I guess I'd have to go with "Meh", since for every positive incident I can also remember someone else being a dick.

I've had a few shining ups, but I've had far more downs. It doesn't help that most of my multiplayer experiences are limited to competitive FPS games. Things like being kicked by hosts for no reason, playing fixed games where all the best players are put in one team against all the new players so they're guaranteed a win (I'm looking at you, Far Cry 2), players that steal loot and send you troll messages, cheating or really poor tactics (the people that constantly jump so you can't hit them properly, or those that only use one-hit rocket launchers).

Then again, I've also had fantastic moments of true comraderie. Generous players with loot, good team players, people that don't give any care beyond mild interest when they find out you're a female player. I also find being a kind player nets others to be more kind to you. It's why I want to play more coop games or MMOs in the future.

It's not so much that people are horrible to each other - it's more because it's a competitive environment with a winner, and no real consequences.

Mostly negative, with the exception of Glitch.

In Glitch everyone was SUPER friendly, people gave items to each other for fun, and you got extra points for using an item on other players that was actually called Random Kindness. Oh and you got points for saying hi as you passed each other, and extra points if you both said hi at the same time.

Pretty good, my main multiplayer game is TF2 so there isn't as much hyper-competitiveness and more teamwork than some other games I've played.

The best groups was when I was starting out and looking for help in some idling servers believe it or not, more often than not the host would kick griefers quickly and half the time everyone just had fun trying to reach the opposing teams spawn or help out with some of the more difficult achievements.

I played tf2, and pretty much everyone I met, whether it was comp or just mucking around was a great person. Seriously, the community for that game is great. There's always a couple of assholes, but for he most part it's been a wonderful time, and I've even met some actual real people friends out of it (screw you catfish, you can meet someone over the internet and it won't go horrible!)

I was once on a server where the 20/24 of the people joined in in singing the Pokemon theme tune. It was pretty special.

Nothing really comes to mind.

I've played a tiny bit of CoD where one guy called people gay when they killed him.

Then I have met some pretty great friends in MMORPGs that I keep in touch with despite not playing. I've also met a good deal of jerks through MMORPGs though.

Then there's those people who do what they're supposed in in Killing Floor. Heal you, kill zombies, weld doors, provide backup, plant pipe bombs while being neither assholes nor exceptional human beings.

In total I give online multiplayer communities a meh. I've got some great experiences, got some bad and everything in between. It all depends on what games you play and who you meet I guess.

I second this. Even joining public squads can be a great experience, especially when everyone works together to curb-stomp purple spandex wearing xenophiles. Although to be fair on the people bitching about the performance, it is kinda bad as of now. Here's hoping the next update sees an improvement.

Don't confuse the way people act online in video games as kindness. There are bad people that are lovely online and lovely people that are bad online.

If I break down my experiences:
- 50% of people are indifferent / you don't get to interact with them
- 45% of people are pleasant
- 5% strive to be awful

Sadly we react to awful so severely that a single person can pull everyone along for the hate train ride, and the worst part of that is people afterwards stay on edge and prefer to interpret everything negatively, so suddenly suggestions and valid complaints become "stupid bitching, whining and moaning" with everyone who would normally just act decently now waiting to go on the attack once more.
So the next time you are ready to flip out take a moment and think of what behavior you are perpetuating.

Mostly negative. Only game I've played where the average player isn't a douche/anti social has been LOTRO. That kind of changed after the game went F2P though.

Worth noting that except for MMOs and a little bit of TF2 I haven't been into multiplayer games for the past ten years.

On the PC side, not bad at all. Well, except in L4D2. That game has an awful community. I don't think I've seen people be so competitive and care so much about something that matters so little. Kills any fun that you might have in VS mode.
The only other games I play online are TF2 and Killing Floor, and they're both alright. Lots of annoying people, but also lots of nice team players.

On the console side, pretty positive. I play on PS3, and no one has voice chat on there for some reason. I do get the occasional nasty PM, but hey, I take it as a compliment.
