Every language that exists is constantly being subjected to evolution (meaning it is always in slow but steady flux) and evaluation, so if a language eventually fails the test of time and is filtered out I'm not sure this is something to be depressed about - it's just the way it works. Besides, I don't claim to know anything about Bo, but my guess is that if it's been around for that long it surely must have affected other, similar languages (which probably emerged later) to a certain degree? Extracting certain elements of a language and applying them to another for reasons of practicality is not unheard of, after all.
So in summary, no, I do not think that languages have to be forcefully preserved... this kind of things has a way of working itself out without conscious interference.
