Take a linguistics class. Writing is not necessary for language.
As everyone who spoke to each other before the Sumerians showed up (or most of the pre-Columbian cultures in the New World) could attest.

There are 6000 different languages in the world, half are spoken by less than 10,000 people. And while there is death, there is birth.

It's only a shame if there are some great works of literature in the language, as they will always lose something in translation, especially verse.

Linguistics high five, madam. And here I thought I was the only one.

Every language that exists is constantly being subjected to evolution (meaning it is always in slow but steady flux) and evaluation, so if a language eventually fails the test of time and is filtered out I'm not sure this is something to be depressed about - it's just the way it works. Besides, I don't claim to know anything about Bo, but my guess is that if it's been around for that long it surely must have affected other, similar languages (which probably emerged later) to a certain degree? Extracting certain elements of a language and applying them to another for reasons of practicality is not unheard of, after all.

So in summary, no, I do not think that languages have to be forcefully preserved... this kind of things has a way of working itself out without conscious interference.

Should we step in and put in measures to protect languages? No. If no one is speaking them and they aren't written down and documented then it's simple evolution. They will disappear. Is it sad? Yeah, but I don't think it's worth stepping in and trying to artificially protect them.

The last speaker of the Indian language Bo have died, this has been spoken for more than ten thousand years.
Now this language and a part of the worlds culture is gone forever.

So I ask you, how do fell about language disappearing. Is it something we has to prevent, or is it something that is just going to happen.

Just as the language Na' vi was created by a linguistics professor on the other side of the world. Makes you think?

Well, clearly as only one person knew it it wasn't very important but I do think we need to retain language difference - a world where everyone speaks English would be boring for me. :)
Would be incredibly useful for everyone else, though.

I don't really care. Languages die, languages are created. It's just the way it is. Eventually I assume we'll end up with some kind of hyper-efficient super language that can communicate via ultrasound.

Why ultrasound?

Because it's ultra!

Besides- how pissed off were you with being forced to learn Latin for two years? I know I was. Even more pointless than French.

May this culture we recorded and written in the recesses of time.

But seriously though, a world with only 5 or 6 languages would be a boring one at best.

To be honest, I don't think it's a big deal. Maybe it just became obsolete.

For every language that disappears, another one is made. It's a shame that the languages being made today are complete shit. We will be remembered as the lazy generation that created textspeak and l33tspeak, both plagues on humanity.
The deevolution of a language(English language anyway)

The best we can hope to do is the teach our children not to talk as stupid as we do....

You can't preserve everything. I shudder to think how museums will look in 10000 years.

Nope, it just happens. Same case with animals. Some go extinct, others survive. No matter how much we try, there is nothing we can do about it.

We need to archive the languages but overall we have too many languages and it's causing problems around the world.

It kinda sucks, but hundreds of other languages are probably gone now too so I don't feel too bad.

I prefer to think of our language legacy to be computer programming.
Yes, textspeak and such were made by us, but it's not really a serious language in the same sense as Bo or even some programming formats.

No. Language is only a means of communication, and it only works if the other person knows the language. It is better for people to let small languages die out and learn larger languages.

If it disappears, it happened for a reason. It obviously wasn't that widely used in the first place or there would be some written record of it.

Latin is a dead language, but it still exists because it has purpose. Obviously nobody cared about the language in question and neither do I.
