Hello Escapists.

As many of you already know, The Lord of the Rings films are a decade old toaday.

What do you think of the trilogy? How do you feel about the recent development?

In my opinion, The Lord of the Rings film trilogy is the greatest piece of cinema I have ever watched. I was amazed 10 years ago, and still amazed today. Even after viewing the entire trilogy over a dozen times, it never gets old.

Everything from the music, the acting(particulary from Ian McKellen and Andy Circus), the sets, effects and genious direction by Peter Jackson, has helped the film become a materpiece of cinema, and will not be forgotten.

Although I felt as though there was some problems with the acting here and there, and the questionable tenchniques at some points and the unecessary romance, the overall quality of the trilogy is truely spectacular.

The events surrounding the trilogy are interesting. From each film only having a budget of $90 million( to put that in perspective, the upcoming Girl in the Dragon Tatoo film will have a budget of $100 million. The whole trilogy combined is $30 million cheaper than the 3rd Pirates of the Carrabien film). The whole trilogy was shot back-to-back, and took years to make. The films almost weren't made, untill Jackson made a last minute deal with New Line Cinema(the company he was originally working with wanted the whole thing condensed into a single film. Jackson made a deal that if he couldn't find a new company to back him in 2 weeks, he would leave the project without any form of compensation, and the company would still have rights to the script. New Line was the last company he visited, as everyone else turned him down. And if New Line didn't buy in, then there would be no-one else to turn to). From the rave reviews, to the massive and record breaking commercial success. From the countless Oscar nomintaions, to the eventual record breaking win of 11 Oscars(the most Oscars even won by a film(drawing with Ben Hur and Titanic), the second sequel to win Best Picture and the only Fantasy film to win Best Picture). Although the Academy refuesed to give Andy even a Oscar nomintion(because they used special effects), I believe that the effects were just a costume, as he was on location/set with the cast, acting by using his voice, facial expressions and body movements.

If you are still wondering what I'm talking about, look up some 'making of' The Two Towers.

The Lord of the Rings not only were good films, but changed cinema. It made Peter Jackson one of the biggest directors around, and following up with another major success, King Kong. WETA became a massive special effects studio, doing films such as District 9 and King Kong. The Lord of the Rings has raised the bar for quality in filmmaking, and may have even inspired the next generation of film makers.

The Hobbit, Jackson's new film and the prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, is coming out December 2012.

Recently, I bought them on Blu-Ray, to watch properly for the first time. I'm watching with my dad, and we're about an hour into The Two Towers.

So far, excellent. CGI is a bit noticeable sometimes, but still excellent.

Thanks, now I actually feel 22 instead of just being 22.

That's... quite a long time ago. I watched every single one in the cinema with my mother. At first because I was 12 and not really allowed to go to the cinema on my own, and then after that it just became tradition. My mother and I went to see the new LoTR when it was out.

I actually quite miss that. It was a ritual that I really looked forward to, and it's not going to happen again. I never did it with the Harry Potters, or the Star Wars Prequels, or the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. (Just choosing three random film series which were released/in production at about the same time)

As to the movies themselves, love them. A lot more than the books. No stupid interlude with Tom Bombadill, no extra half a book tacked on to the last one after the main story is finished. Great movies, great memories, great experience.

Some of the best movies ever made IMO. Its amazing how well the special effects hold up even by today's standards, and I still get a little misty-eyed at the awesomeness that is the Ride of the Rohirrim. Here's an interesting thought, I've heard these movies called this generation's Star Wars. Not sure If I agree with this or not but its worth thinking about.

I assumed "really good bacon meant good, 'cause bacon's awesome and all. please tell me I didn't just unintentionally insult some of my favorite films.

Oh dear God it has been that long, now I feel sad, and old.

It's the best trilogy I've ever seen and they are my absolute favorite movies. I remember when they were coming out I was super excited about seeing them in theatres, and then watched numerous times before they left the theatres.

Good times, real damn good times.

You think that's bad? Here's some stuff to make you feel old:
there are kids getting Halo: Anniversary that weren't even born when the original version came out.
Children that weren't alive during 9/11 are now old enough to talk about it.
If you were born in the eighty's, you have lived through four decades, two centuries, and seven presidents (U.S.).

I feel like they were great bits of film, but could be bogged down a bit at times. Not to mention I personally feel they cut some of the wrong scenes (IE Saruman's death) from the movies which were put into the deluxe editions.

This thread has reminded me how much I love my boxed sets of the first and second one. I'd love for NZ to play them at theaters in celebration of this.

All 3 films are still the best movie experiences I ever had. They are amazingly well done and unfortunately I don't think The Hobbit will be as great. Hopefully I'm wrong.
