In recent years WoW has been without exaggeration DOMINATING the MMORPG world and has come to be known as the first MASSIVE multiplayer online gaming experience, due to that now everyone wants to make an MMORPG. I ask of you all you gamers out there, does this not seem like a suicide attempt for all people involved, including WoW?

Let me explain.

We've got some at LEAST halfway decent MMO's out there. Aion, 2Moons, Final fantasy 14 (coming soon) Fiesta, DnD, just to name a few but none of them have even come near to defeating the ice cold giant of WoW that blizzard itself is amazed at, but doesn't this eventually spell suicide for that same giant?

Soon players may just be tired of run though a bunch of small innocent forest creatures with spells that make your computer go 2 frames for hour because you own a pink mac (i personally have an xp but let's get back on point here) and collect all the equipment to either sell, wear or give to a bunch of other players who you don't even personally know but do for a fact know that their lives are just as based on WoW as yours is.
Eventually, people are going to want something MORE then orc vs humans or space marines or a stupid goventment conspiracy, and our own boredom shall become the downfall of the game industry because of us playing WoW to begin with.

First, we play WoW and get hooked while the smaller mmos lose money and eventually die to the giant Cold monster known as blizzard.

Then we become bored of wow and want something else, something more immersive. Until WoW comes out with a new expansion pack to hold us over until finally (in a few years time) the creators run out of ideas and start releasing the same stuff over again.

Afterwards, we quit, looking for something new only to discover that all the good games were smothered to death by the giant fat ice cold beast that is WoW.

AND IM NOT BLAMING IT ON THE PLAYERS SO MUCH AS IM BLAMING IT ON GAME CREATORS.

We've had faaaar too many WoW clones in the past few years, as noted on extra credit (a big thumbs up to them) and even though its partially the fault of the hordes of nerds the sit in their basements (or my father in his room. yes my dad plays wow. a pally with more then 6.5k gear score....i think...i haven't played since my first warlock.)feeding the blizzard.

I understand for nerds out there really like WoW but is this as far as you want your gaming experience to go? To lvl....80 (which my dad hit in like..2 weeks...how does he do that?! took me a month to hit lvl 50 on my mage..) I would rather see a game expand past the god of war hacky slashy gameplay with vengence storyline. More then the FF storyline with a halfway good combat system but terribad love story storyline and every other character looks the same. (Hope's yellow shirt is tidus's yellow shirt. almsot every bad guy looks like seymour and theres always the same group of characters... an emo, vincent hope cloud, a cheery girl, vanille rinoa, a serious ownage girl that everyone somehow likes, fran lighting aka Light and the main character which somehow always happens to be a blonde...which extends through most of popular media....naruto, tidus, cloud ,murder princess, etcetc.) and MORE then the space marine go here, shoot bad guys. (at least halo reach's multiplayer will suffice for that....i loved those days of running through beta noobs.)

Can we only hope for a miracle? For a day when the zombies will snap out of it and go play with the WII they brought go but never hooked up (wii still sucks, i just couldn't think of anything else.) or uninstall WOW and go download something better?

I have never found an MMO that I like. All of them have boring gameplay, poor storytelling, and are to heavily based on getting the next tier of gear.

there is a good reason why wow is so popular so probably it will not be dethroned, it only may be by the new mmo bizzard is making, or maybe the star wars mmo will turn some people away from wow

The problem with MMO' for me is that its one game that sucks up Soooo much time.. so you're pretty much just playing that one game.
I'm not quite so... monogamous. I like to consume dozens of games a year, usually several at the same time.

WoW is the marriage of gaming.

People play WoW because it's currently the best MMO there is, not because it's some kind of mind-control device that forces everyone to play it. If a better game comes out, people will go and play that game.

What miracle are you looking for.

People choose what they want to play.

More to the point you have dozens of avenues of games outside of the main stream. Check out the PSN, Live marketplace, Steam, Kongregate, greenhouse games, MMOhut.

As well a number of those mmo's you mentioned are still up and running. If YOU have fun playing the game why do you care if it 'topples' or 'dethrones' WoW. People will play what they want to play. You don't need to kill a giant to still be fun.

People DO want something more. Indie companies are more then HAPPY to give it to you, and for cheap as well. In some cases free.

You don't want to keep playing the same kinda games there are in the mainstream? Then go play in the six other streams begging for you to take a dip.

So my question to you is this.

Why does an MMO have to 'defeat' another MMO to be enjoyable? If you like any of those MMO's you mentioned just play them and be happy.

If you find mainstream gaming to be very samey why not go play some independent games from steam. Boot up some cool flash games. There are a lot of inventive games out there. Just because there not going to topple giants in the industry doesn't mean they are not fun.

In short. Why does a game have to be mainstream to get the time of day from you?

Don't worry your not alone.

It is just a lot cheaper to do what WoW has done.
Not cheaper.

Safer. Different ideas would be cheaper *gestures to Korean MMOs and MMOhut.*

Not necessarily true comma it seems to be more of the best game out there as well as being the most familiar period People like familiarity comma this may not get the new players as much but it will keep the old ones sucked into it apostrophe s game period

Also one last thing. Do not say FFXIV is a good game or halfway decent if it is not even released yet. I do not even think that the beta is out for it yet (however I could be wrong).

It is currently in beta as my friend has told me period And I can see the WoW hatred clearly here as well don apostrophe t worry period

asterisk pats asterisk

OT colon From what I got from playing WoW wasn apostrophe t as much the game itself but the people I met while playing it period The social aspect of playing with friends I could know from other parts of the world was what made the World of Warcraft so great period

I can't speak for the majority of WoW players but that apostrophe s my take on it comma the only thing that will cause this to stop is a mass migration comma which I don apostrophe t see happening until Blizzard forsakes WoW for it aposrophe s successor dot dot dot which is just repeating the process period

[sub]This is a posting style my friends put me upto, I apostrophe m liking it and unless I get about 100 people yelling at me for it I think I apostrophe ll keep using it left bracket Quite literally quotation mark Zero Punctuation quotation mark right bracket period[/sub]

Wow, this is one great poll, just like
Do you share my opinion?
[]Jup
[]Yeah
[]totally
[]Yes
[]Give this man a medall

Also you seem to confuse the MMO-Market with gaming as a whole. There are perfectly healthy single-player games out there that couldn't care less about wow.

Nah I don't think it will be the downfall of gaming. Mostly because WoW will only fail if an MMO comes out that takes all their subscribers, or if blizz finally decides to stop making new WoW expansions. I think they will at least keep going until lvl 100, then maybe stop. At that point it will take about 2 to 3 years before players start to actually leave in large numbers. WoW does better then everyone else because it is better. I love the group instances, and messing around with friends. I'm not playing it right now because it just got so boring, so I'm at the point where WoW no longer has any appeal. But I have tried pretty much every newer MMO games to come out, and they all suck compared to WoW. That's my opinion, but they all lack the one thing that made WoW fun to me, instances. They all seem like the exact same thing, even WoW is a lot like them, excluding instances. That's why I love WoW.

Besides I fail to see how 11 million players, and a large number of those are in China and Korea, will destroy the gaming market. There are tons of people who hate MMO games and still buy regular games.

WOW players are like Apple lovers. For better or for worse they WILL stick with their company.

Only World of Starcraft might move substantial amounts of players away from WOW.

HOLY SHIT someone else knows 2Moons exists!

OT: I disagree. The other MMOs won't die off because there will always be people playing niche games, such as Guild Wars and Lineage 2.

First off, not every FF lead character is "Blonde" nor does every character seem to be some sort of cookie cutter persona. Please play some FF titles other than XIII X and XII. Also 90% of all FF fans despised VIII.

Also for some odd reason I feel that this entire thread has a "I hate WoW" vibe to it. It may just be me but is anyone else feeling the same way? Also saying that all nerds love WoW... kinda rude.

All MMORPG's are basically the same. Level up to cap, raid and pvp. You just need to know how to innovate that to make it different than the competitors. However innovation does not come cheap and thusly we do not see such things. It is just a lot cheaper to do what WoW has done. However the recent releases of MMO's are changing things up ala The Agency. Also by the time WE, the current followers of MMO gamers, get tired of it all, we will move on to something else and the next generation will start playing them. No matter what there IS an audience for a chosen idea. Government Conspirators? Yep, audience for them. Space Shooters with little to no story? Yep, audience for them. QTE event heavy games? Yes, audience for them as well. You see where I am getting at?

Also one last thing. Do not say FFXIV is a good game or halfway decent if it is not even released yet. I do not even think that the beta is out for it yet (however I could be wrong).

Note : You're forgetting about Zidane (another blonde). The only non blonde main character of FF games that comes to mind (beginning from the playstation days) is squall, who is labeled under emo.

I apologize if it seems like i said all nerds love wow I meant to say all WOW players are nerds (lol....joking joking I've met some hot guys that play WoW)

Further more I understand there is an audiance for this type of game but when are those same people going to STOP PLAYING WOW and find a better mmo, even a WoW clone would suffice....*cough cough AION cough cough* I actually liked WoW, specfically the pvp because I was Alliance as a mage so therefore i watched everyone else DIE while I did pyroblasts halfway across the map (yay me!....but those rogues think they are SOOOO pro.) I also apologize for not adding a "YAY WOW IS AWESOME AND WILL NEVER DIEEEEEE" option.

There will be no such thing as a "World of Starcraft". It will be called "Universe of Starcraft" and it will be GLORIOUS!
AND THEN WE CAN TAKE CHIPS....AND EAT THEM

If someone brought back the freedom the Galaxies gave me I would drop WoW in a heart beat.

People play WoW because no other MMO appeals to them like WoW does.

Not out of some stupid loyalty to a company.
