Well the Dutch seem to hate me because I'm Muslim so I don't exactly feel the same way as everyone else about the Dutch, sorry. But I don't have low opinions of Dutch people either, just because someone hates you doesn't mean you have to hate them back and I also refuse to believe that ALL Dutch people hate Muslims even if I was told such a thing, Dutch people don't automatically hate me...do they?

What a beautiful language that has a single word for "damned shoes". Or so the internet tells me.
Oh wow, Google translate actually knows that word. I can't say I was expecting that. (Though "fuckin' shoes" would probably be a better translation than "damned shoes")
Anyway, you can pretty much append anything with "klote-" and it will become an expletive! Hooray for our language!

I think it's gonna be very wet when the ice-caps melt.

Wet is in I'm gonna be living at a beach...
Or I would if I weren't planning to move to Japan...

Eh, no, they don't. Please don't tell me you got your entire opinion based on Geert Wilders. I swear that idiot is more of a menace than people think...

Dutch guy here.
Also, soft-drugs are NOT LEGAL in the Netherlands. Certain stores (coffee-shops) are allowed to sell them (called a 'gedoogbeleid'), but they are not legal. They just allow these specific stores to sell them under very strict policy and rules, and you are not allowed to have too much on you at any time, not at home and not on the street. And you are also required to smoke it inside the coffee-shop after you bought it (even though that rule barely gets enforced).

All of this is done under the motto of: "better to slip a little evil in, to keep the big evil out".

The Dutch are rather successful, if you put hem against the other imperialistic super-powers at the time, they as a tiny speck on Europe managed to grab some land on Africa.
The fact that the rule there was vicious, horrible and unjust pales to the prisoner island of Australia. Go UK!

I went there recently and it was alright, though I'm not ready to heap praise on the entire nation just yet. Did approve of how nice and flat it was, where I live is far too hilly.

Also, why are there no drugs in the poll? I don't think most people know that we are supposed to be known for clogs (wooden shoes), (wind)mills, tulips and even cheese and the color orange, but every damn foreigner I talk to mentions the legal drugs.
you forgot america. question: how the fuck can you be known for a colour? specifically orange? thats better than britain, who are known for rain.
dutch people are pretty cool though. i met one online on Halo 3 and he was by far the sanest person there (me included). interesting culture but when you make legal what most other countries dont, thats all youll be known for. shame.
What do you mean "I forgot America"?

I'm not trying to say that we invented the color orange or anything, but I wouldn't be surprised when people think of that color when they think of the Netherlands. It seems to be a fairly unpopular color with most other countries (and people), and it is pretty much ingrained in our culture. If you ever saw any official sports event where Dutch people were competing or in the audience, there's about a 99% chance they were wearing orange. Whenever anything remotely patriotic is happening (like a sports event or Queensday), everybody wears orange. It's just our color.

I think 6-8 Black Men is probably one of the funnies stories I've ever heard, and it's about The Netherlands. Also, Dutch sounds completely ridiculous as a language so that's always fun.

On that note, thanks for the word "stoop". Without it we never would've had Stoop Kid.

Now here's my problem... how the 'beeb' did someone get the idea that we still have a larger role in this world than the boundaries of our border? Which special 'economical'role within the EU? We lost the largest port in the world (and in Europe) and the germans have a way more balanced financial state that us Dutch people. Everything has been slowly decaying over the last 500 years or so to the point where the only organisations of importance are ICC and the ICJ which are legaly not even on Dutch land...

Now don't get me wrong, I love my country to the death (yes i'm quite patriotic) but some things should just not be understood wrong.

the fact's:
-We are know internationaly for bending (no not breaking) international rules (we condone drugs, THERE STILL ILLEGAL)
-We are in the economical centre of the world therefore we are economicly profound, however we are a mere entrypoint into the greater economy's of Europe
-Besides the ICC and ICJ we do have some sites which are important, the TU delft or the university in Utrecht, however which country does not have some stucture of importance.
-And last but not least, we are slipping, as Europe is falling into the dark abyss of race hate (as are we, Holland) the economical balance center in shifting to China and other Asian country's. It's only a matter of time before we, the so called wealthy, exceptionally advanced west will be called semi-periphery, countries like Germany and GB will survive due to large population, but we, with our so called 'poldermodel' (which is genius in it's idea's) will not only be a secondary country pretending to be first-class, but a secondary country first class

I don't mind accepting that, i still love my country to the heart

ps: yea i don't focus on when to use to and too

Its because our royal house is the house of orange-nassau. Orange being a small fiefdom in France and Nassau being the island.

Most definately not. In fact, up until a few years ago, the Netherlands was always a very tolerant country to people of all religions or ethnicity. Its just that in recent years a single guy has founded a political party based on slandering and bashing muslims, and has been successful in that by appealing to the lowest common denominator (fear of the unknown in this case). Dont worry too much about it. While he does have quite a lot of people following him (current polls put his party at about 15% of all votes), everyone else thinks he is a *expletive deleted*. It will not last long.

The first thing is of course the liberal stance on marijuana, prostitution and other fun things. But it's not "oh, the dutch are such sex-addicted potheads". more like "all the sex addicted potheads want to vacation in the Netherlands".

The next things are the dikes, windmills and also that it's almost underwater. I think of it as modern, wealthy, free etc.
I've certainly never heard anything bad about the dutch. outside of Europe I don't think the Netherlands is considered important, if only because it has only slightly more people than my home-state of Wisconsin. On that note, what do you all think of Wisconsin, or if that's too obscure, the Midwestern U.S. (Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan)

Yay! I just had the feeling that I would not be welcome among the Dutch and I certainly don't want to cause trouble if I'm not wanted. So I guess it would be fine to go for a visit and go to that town made of chocolate, that is in the Netherlands right? It's something my dad told me about and it sounds awesome (I certainly won't go for weed and hookers since I'm not into that stuff).

Nah, I'm not one to make an opinion based off one asshole. It was a few posts that I read from Dutch Atheists that made me uneasy, but then again that was in the R&P section (which I usually prefer to stay away from).
