I don't know how I feel about phones since they cause tumours, but then I realised two things:
a) they never actually use them as phones, they text, play godawful music on tinny speakers, or watch 2 girls 1 cup

b) even if they do get tumours, I hate children. So it's all good

Mobile phones cause tumors? I'd like to meet such a person, maybe he can introduce me to his friend the guy who OD'd on marijuana, or the fellow who electrocuted himself pissing on the third rail.

Fact is a common oven gives off more radiation than a damn mobile phone! Yes, there is some concern as to the effects on human health, and studies are ongoing, but so far there hasn't been anything conclusive, and certainly no (confirmed) fatalities. At most, the deaths a mobile phone can cause are idiots using them while driving and not paying attention to the road.

Seriously, a cellphone does not make a child any less a child. Get off your damned "MY CHILDHOOD WAS BETTAR" horse.

Well I won't argue with you for two reasons.
1) You seem to have done more research than me and therefore probably know what you're talking about
2) your avatar is sweet, is that the mysterious stranger?

I'm 22 years old and I teach high school students in a country town. Even out here, kids take ipods and mobile phones to class. I never got a mobile until I was in year 12 myself, and I have to confiscate them constantly from students in year 7 or 8 for using them. Somtimes there's a legitimate reason, like a sick relative or an after-school appointment, but even then, the parents can call the school then notify the student.

Students have also become accustomed to listening to music while working. I listened to music ONCE because I had headphones on a PC I was using and again, that was in year 12, when teachers tend to be slacker with class management.

I see kids during lunchtime with DSs and PSPs, and the fact that I can talk games with them helps me connect with their interests. It's good for them to enjoy something at school, especially lunch and recess, but they've become too dependant and grow increasingly lazy. Trying to pressure them to do work without listening to music is like pulling a horse and cart from quicksand.

What bothers me is that 8-year-olds seem to be dressing like whores today, letalone the technology.

Why would you pressure them to do so though? I'm mean, presuming it's not a proper class session where they have to have their ears open to the teacher anyway, what's wrong with a little music? (With headphones of course.)

Before children used to actually play sports and be active. Now all they do is sit around on a computer seat and play a MMORPG or FPS. I think that despite how great the technological revolution was, it has it's flaws.

People were having this exact same discussion in the 50's and 60's about television. Oh no, horrible television is turning our children into antisocial zombies! You know what? Kids were still kids even with television, and kids will still be kids with myspace and ipods, etc.

I have a 10-year old sister who has an ipod, a nintendo DS, and Wii, and she spends plenty of time with her friends. You can't just generalize and assume that all kids with expensive electronics don't have friends, or your no worse than the panic-mongerers in the 50's.

I do not even understand why a 7 year old would need a bloody cell phone, they usually don't spend enough time away from their parents to merit the need. As for an ipod, odds are they will see all the older people (myself included) listening to them on full blast and trying to be cool will do it themselves which is too much for their ears. They do not need them.

I don't buy the "kids were happier in the good old dyas" arguement simply because what one counts as "fun" is dependent on the person in question, and what is avaliable to the person at the time. But I do find it somewhat odd see 7 year old children with a dman cell-phone, that is just plain ...I don't even really know how to describe my opinion on it.

I kind of grew up in the tech shift of the early 2000's, and to me, it feels like I didn't miss out, because my parents kept that stuff away from me until I was around 10 or so, when I got my first Ipod, I never used the blasted thing because I liked playing outside and hanging out with friends more... Then I became a gamer and that all changed... (I got my first cell phone when I was 13, fucking hated it, I felt like I was never alone)

Can someone explain to me succinctly and clearly why it's such a terrible thing that children have access to technology?

So far, all I've gathered is that they should be playing outside having fun, and I have to say, has it occurred to anyone that maybe playing with the technology is more fun than running around outside?

I think their all (except me, obviously, I never leave the computer except to piss.) spoilt shits. I never got a cell until about 5 months ago, but then again I lost it 2 months ago so it shows you that you shouldn't trust me with anything, that's why I never leave the room.

I hate kids and their cells. I had to watch my friends 8 yr old for 3 years once and she was the 2nd biggest ***** i ever met.

In one instance I had to take her for a check up and she was texting. I told her to stop (because she doesn't move whilst texting) and to get going.

She told me to "fuck off old man, you're just mad that you don't have a phone like this".
I smacked her upside the head, hard, and broke her phone. After the check up i asked her where she learned to talk like that. She told me on myspace. I then deprived her of most electronics untill her father got back. I raised her better than her father and she still doesn't text or go on myspace.

I hate it when technology and bad parenting meet. That incident was only one occasion of her being a ***** and me... correcting her.

I don't mind that children have mobile phones, so long as they understand that it is to be used for emergencies only. If they want to socialise, they can wait until they are old enough to work and pay the bills for it. While my friends went through credit like crazy, I was given $50 credit and told that if I went through it too quickly, then I would have to wait for more. I was 16 and wasn't working, so my credit lasted me 6 months.

As for other electronice devices, children who don't NEED them, shouldn't have them. Granted, my parents bought game consoles and that was it. But, we weren't allowed to play them if other children were over, we were booted out into the street to play.

Yes, I think children these days are growing up too fast and not just electronically. Some of the stuff I see young girls wearing...I won't get into that.
