right, this might take a while so pull up a chair. while back, I decided to try and grow a soul patch like Jack black; purely on a whim. later I decided to grow a moustache as well. they weren't terrible and they werent bum fluff, some of the teachers genuinly said it suited me.
Now, skip along a few months till after the summer holidays prior to my final year at the school and its stepped up to a full beard and moustache, not too far away from a goatee. I was genuinly proud of it and people liked it (only a few didnt like it) and one of my friends almost worshipped the damn thing.
now a few days or a week into my first term and the my form teacher drops the bomb "You have to shave it". Apparently the schools owner (Private school) had talked with the head mistress and had decided that i had to shave off my pride and joy.

Now I might be regrowing my facial hair for a charity event and I want to know what the people of the internet think: Is the school fair in making me shave?

heres a few points to consider
- I kept it neat; I even had a comb for it
- There was nothing in the school rules against it
- the school's motto is: "Where the individule counts"
- Even the head mistress said she liked it

Well yeah a school shouldn't really be able to tell you to shave...

I understand in some places/conditions it's a necessity and a health and safety concern.

But in school? Doesn't sit right with me...

Nope, if it wasen't against the rules then they had no right to tell you to get rid of it. I say grow it back just to spite them.

I would say yes, but only if they had a strict dress code. It's mostly a discipline thing.

In my school, a light dusting of stubble was permitted, but no beards (except charity events, but only then for male teachers)

They made you shave your facial hair?!
The owner of the school obviously felt threatened by it.
Honestly, I wouldn't have done it.
If it's not against the rules, then why does he demand that you shave it off?
Doesn't this guy have anything better to do?
Then they use that hypocritical motto.
It makes me sick.

No, they shouldn't. While extreme hairstyles (I.E: A two foot tall green spike in the middle of your head) are understandable for this, Facial hair, as long as it isn't like Father Christmas, should be fine. I would arrange a meeting with the owner and defend it to him in a formal manner.

Also, forgive me if I am going too far, but could we see it? That would be the best judge. Also how old are you, because if you were like 14 years old then for some strange reason I feel my argument is a lot weaker, but I couldn't say why.

Agreed. He has the right to do what he wants with his body if the law doesn't restrict him. It shouldn't matter if the headmaster doesn't like the beard, it is his body and as long as it isn't a health concern (he said he was grooming it properly) than it should be fine.

So no, they don't have the right to control your facial hair provided that it wasn't in the rules stated when you originally joined that community. If they start grading you negatively just because of the hair, it may be time to consider legal action.

Some uptight twat probably paid someone off to hate on your beard because they were jealous.
This was probably exactly the reason behind them taking special interest in the OP's hair.

If its a private school and the owner tells you to do something, then you pretty much do it or get out of the school. I'll admit that its not a very nice thing to do and totally unjust but you have to do what the owner of the school wants.

In the end they do have the right to yes on the basis of keeping a uniform appearance (I am guessing you have a school uniform)

IT'S A PRIVATE SCHOOL!

You have to deal with it.
As a PRIVATE school, they can tell you to do all sorts of crap.

Maybe it's against your school's religious believes or something.

Few questions of my own:

What year are you in?

Have you actually put forward your argument as put forth on this forum

How long did it take to grow?

Personally I'd keep it just to spite them but I'm a prick whoose never been able to grow a good even beard. If not I'd just take the strategy of do a "Not shave" for chairty the moment the oppurtunity presents itself or just let it grow back and force the teacher to continually have to keep saying every few weeks to shave it.

Though as someone pointed out, it is a Private School so you do kind of have to do what they say. It's not fair, but that's private school for you. If it were public I'd just say "What are they gonna do about it, shave you against your will?"

Whatever, just wash your hands.

If there is a uniform system, then absolutely. I voted yes because in this country there is a uniform system and hair is involved in it.

I also voted yes because a soul patch is the word type of facial hair ever. Even though you grew it out, it doesn't forgive the patch in the first place. It is only second in rubbish to those really thin line beards/moustaches

Did they ever tell you WHY you had to shave it? You could always ask them where in the rules it says you have to shave (then restrain yourself from laughing when they draw a blank).

Im in the top year, I didn't bother because if you knew the owner you'd know its pointless to argue it takes a month or so to get to the baseline then a couple more to get to the thickness i had

and I get what you guys mean about uniform and the whole private school thing, i just wanted to see how people felt about it

I'll see if i can find a way of posting the picture of it on here.

its a private school. they have the right to tell you to do whatever they want you to do

thats why a lot of christian conservatives and people in Utah go to private schools, so they can teach the bible in schools and not evolution and still get away with it.

The only two circumstances where my school (or parts of it) would require shaving were if you joined JROTC (obvious) or wrestling (they don't want facial hair irritating skin, it being a very close-contact sport). Personally I wouldn't say it's right, being a kid who takes pride in facial hair himself.

As for the charity part, my high school has an annual charitable competition with the other to raise money. My friends suggested that for next years (since my fuzz's surprisingly well-known both places), both schools hold a fund for whether I shave or keep it.

Hell if I could force everyone on the planet to shave, I damn well would, the only people I'd give an exemption too are men over the age of 60 who can make it work.

If you're under the age of 25 you just can't grow enough hair on your face to not look like you've got public hair on your chin.
