What is the state of Minecraft? I say that in its current state, it will never 'truly' be finished, because Notch will never get off his fat ass. Every different mod I look at and I see the Innovation behind it, and what it could bring to the table. One such mod I would like to talk about is "Better than Wolves" By FlowerChild. When the Patch for wolves came out he was furious that Notch took so much time just creating something so easy; so FlowerChild decided to one up him and decided to create a mod that was filled with so many wonderful things, that it had Elevators, Anchors that could connect to ropes, Lights that could switch one and off, and cement that could be used to create flooring or in a PVP Server even be used as a decent Death Trap.

I use "Better than Wolves" as an example because it only proves that Notch does not know what the hell he is doing, and truthfully he needs to let this go. Next patch, I can understand that it is a bug fixer, but he is introducing Pistons... which someone has already created (*cough cough* http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/228373-ssp166-pistons-rails-pushed-again/ ...)

It is really insulting that he is wasting both his time and ours with useless ideas. Sure he can fix bugs, and later on pull an Obsidian and say "Oh sorry, made it worse, here is another patch to fix it" which he did with the 1.6 patches, but I want a better game in the end that will give me the best of best experiences.

EDIT: If you wish to leave a comment as to why Notch should stay to produce Minecraft as a Defendant, or if you wish to add as to why he should be replaced I would like to hear what you have to say. I am sure everyone else would like to as well.

EDIT: The Conversation has evolved, so read the thread over a little bit.

Notch himself has admitted that he's not even close to as quick on gameplay updates as he wants to be. That's sort of the point of the Adventure Update, which will have mod API.

And you say he can fix bugs as though it's an afterstatement. He fixed more than a hundred in one update. That's not a small feat. I say leave him to his devices, soon enough there'll be gameplay a-plenty.

I say give him a break. You said yourself, theres plenty of mods for Minecraft. If you're so desperate for certain things, there'll be a mod for it.

I think Notch should have control over Minecraft for as long as he wants. He owns it, he developed it from pretty much scratch (not completely sure about this. There seems to be alot of conflicting reports about him drawing from other game code) and he made it what it is today: Fucking awesome.

I don't think he should handover the reigns simply because he's not working fast enough for you. He was a one-man band for most of Minecraft's history, and he's only recently got a few people behind him to help. You think its insulting that he's wasting your time? So what? I find you're impatience and disrespect insulting, and its not even aimed at me!

What's with the current trend of people demanding more and more, and considering themselves entitled to things? Why can't people be happy with what there already is? I have no urge for faster updates, because I'm quite happy with what Minecraft is already. I know more stuff is coming, and I'm happy to wait. Why aren't you?

Wow. I didnt think I could write that much this late...

Well... he is working alone as far as I heard, these people modding likely only make their mod, he creates, rewrites, and scripts everything, they just start from a template.

So Notch's team of like six people isn't updating fast enough for you? How about since he made it, he gets to continue making it? You forget one very important thing in all this: He doesn't need you, or even Minecraft at this point. At any given moment he could fire the team, delete the game and retire to the Cayman Islands and live out the rest of his days sipping Mamosas on the beach with the money he has. Stop acting so entitled and start being grateful will you?

I am merely saying Minecraft could be so much more. The Mod Community does nothing but do that when Notch should be doing it, not them. Bless the Mod Community for doing what Notch cannot, otherwise Minecraft would have died in the water ages ago. I don't care if he invented it, that doesn't give him any entitlement to anything except that he invented it. Anyone can invent anything. College Students in Canada created the Lightbulb, then Thomas Edison came to Canada to buy the Rights to it then improved it to what it is today (Guess who got all the credit); why can't the same happen to Minecraft?

Perhaps I should leave it as it is, but Notch should be doing a better job than just leaving the Mod Community doing all the work with Gameplay.

I love Minecraft the way it is, and can wait for updates, I think if others made it it could easily lose the style that drew a lot of people in, you can download mods, as you mentioned, that makes it so if you are not satisfied with just what Notch does you can get other stuff.

Notch has a life other then Minecraft let him enjoy it. He doesn't have the biggest team and he's working on the Adventure update. I respect Notch he started with little and in the end he has a lot like Radoh said

He could do that but he's choosing not too he cares about the community not everyone downloads mods I don't that's the point of adding pistons he said he like the idea of them so he's adding them now calm down.

Actually no, since he made it it does entitle him to do what he wants with it. It's his, and if he doesn't want to update it ever again than he doesn't need to.

Here's my thought:

Notch should continue to produce Minecraft, it is his brainchild after all, but he should really start relying on modders more for content. There are a number of amazing mods out there that really should make their way into the main game, in part or in whole.

The 'Better than Wolves' is a great example. Another is the 'Aether' mod
(http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic...alm-current-topic-new-nether/page__hl__aether)
that several modders have put together. When they released the pictures of the 'sky world' that Mojang was working on, my first thought was: 'thats it?'. Someone had already (almost) made a more fleshed out and feature-full mod of the same concept, it has flying whales for christsake.

Most of these modders do all their work for free distribution over the forums anyway, many would probably be honored for their mod to be picked up by Mojang. Hell, pay them even.
$100 (or regional equivalent) is probably chump change for Notch now and is more than mod makers were planning on getting anyway.

Notch has put out some great stuff in the past (well...I thought the nether was pretty neat) but if people are going to make stuff for his game regardless then he should be trying to use it.

Not to hate on Notch, but he really should be using the resources that are right in front of him.
Just ask permission and give them credit and they would probably let you.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I dont think that Notch has to add everyone's mod to minecraft. But if there is already a working mod for something that he was going to include anyway (*cough* skyworld *cough*) then he should go for it.

Also, if he just let people send him mods and he put them in the game or something similar to that, he would never get around to implementing all the things, and if everyone had the ability to update, you, sir, would have a horribly ruined game.

granted shiny new stuff is great but not if its so bugged out the game has issues running correctly

You forget that along with working on Minecraft he has to oversee the production of Scrolls and manage Mojang. It's not like he's sitting on his ass all day like people imagine he is. He has said that he even feels he is too slow with content updates but he's also workin on the 360 version of Minecraft, the modding API, the adventure update and he said he'd like to rewrite the whole engine in C++. And he just rewrote the lighting engine.

It's his game, not yours. If he wants to take his time with updates, then so be it. We DECIDED to pay for the game as it was.

The only way Notch could actually break his contract with us is if he never finishes the game, which I think he will.

He made the thing! He can take as long as he wants to do stuff. Also he is one man and there are millions of people playing Minecraft and I would say thousands of people adding to it in their own way. If there was a team of thousands of people working on one design for the game then it would also never get done. Don't be hating on Notch just because he takes a while to do stuff.

It's nothing new for a modding community to produce much-desired additions to games faster than the games themselves. World of Warcraft added a lot of things to their UI that had been handled by addons from third-party sources for years. Frankly, I was pleased that they got with the program afterwards because it made it possible for me to reduce the amount of third-party additions I had to keep track of.

Just because mods are doing one better than the game that inspired them to mod is no reason to give the game's creator the boot. One of the most hailed aspects of the Oblivion game is how it was supported by a modding community. I put Minecraft in the same lump. Personally, I'm okay with the game as-is and the only third-party thing I've added to mine are different textures. But I'm glad other people have the option to use different mods provided by other skilled programmers.

I sorta thought that modding was one of the points of Minecraft... Notch encourages it, and pretty sure that building an essentially barebones system and then allowing others to play creatively with the world/code you've created is what the game's all about. So no, I don't think he's being lazy, and I don't think he should be replaced.
