For the purpose of this argument, let's assume that Metacritic scores by users not critics represent the majority. The platform for both is the Xbox 360.

Skyrim was rated a 96/100 by critics and a 8.7/100 by the users. COD: MW3 was rated 89/100 and 3.2/10 by the users. This is one way you can measure the worth of a game. Another way is the cash. COD:MW3 so far has generated $650 million in sales since it's release. Skyrim has generated about $450 million, but keep in mind that MW3 was released first.

So which is better? How do you decide what is a better work of art and a more enjoyable experience from those two things alone?

EDIT: Personal opinion is not a valid response. This entire thread is Sales vs Majority Opinion. Personal opinion is not part of that.

EDIT: EDIT: Okay. This is supposed to be a debate of sorts between two sides. The reason I put only TWO options up there is because I wanted to see those TWO points argued. Arguing against both is not a way to go about a debate. One side or another.

basically this. i have no interest in skyrim whatsoever and i enjoy mw3. does that make my opinion wrong? no, it makes it an opinion. nothing can ever be declared factually better than anything else. i think donnie darko is the best movie ever made and psychonauts deserves to be at the top of everyone's best games ever list, but you may not agree. majority opinion and sales don't matter really, individual opinion matters. :)

You can never objectively decide whether something is a "better work of art", and whether or not something is "enjoyable" will vary from person to person based on their opinions and the circumstances under which they played the game. Reviews aren't the end all, be all, "this work is better than that other one, and you're stupid for enjoying the other one". They are merely an informed individuals way of relating his experience with the work and the perception derived from it. By extension, sites like Metacritic are merely distillations of reviews that fail to take various nuances like genre preference into account. I personally prefer Skyrim to MW3, but having Metacritic on my side does not make my opinion any more valid.

Im confused, you're comparing an open world fantasy RPG, and a FPS and asking us which is better. Quite simply, you dont. You dont compare to completely different games based on scores or even revenue. This is ignoring the fact that the MW3 metacritic score was spammed with 0's and ignoring that its a Multiplayer game.

The only problem with that I would say is that your opinion isn't worth as much as someone who has played both games, and is therefor educated in their decision.

that's a good point, but the thing is, my point was that there really isn't a way to "measure the worth of a game" you just have to make your own choices and neither can ever definitively have more worth. also now that i think about i don't know why i quoted the first guy, even though i agree with him haha

If people took the time to spam a game with 0's, wouldn't that mean that a majority doesn't like it? And the entire point of the forum is to try to compare two different genres. You can, you simply can. For example, Citizen Kane is a better movie than American Pie 3. Two different genres, two different styles, one is better. The personal opinion spin is nice, but it's not what this thread is about.

Do you know what majority means?
That's the point. In your case, the answer would be sales.

I go by my opinion and my opinion is that Skyrim is far superior to MW3. However, I am sure there are tons of people that love MW3 and would hate Skyrim!
There is no reason to have two games in massively different genres competing with each other.

Majority opinion would be the better of the two. CoD was going to sell much more than Skyrim, nobody is going to question that. You just can't compete with the franchise name. Does that make it a better game? No. But it all still comes down to personal preference.

Raj always says, "You can drunkenly marry woman, but unless always drunk, she not stay that pretty!"

Things can sell good. Does not mean they are good. Raj bought towel, "Soak up oceans of liquid!" it promise. Cant even absorb blood Raj track into house. Wife Mjoll not care that i was cheated. She just hit me with hammer and tell me to get out.

Should be rated based on what everyone think! People going to hate, so game should be rated on, "who has most haters". Winner would be E.T. game all the time. Raj rather eat giant's toe then play E.T. again.....

Do you have any ideas how means work? Because 0 bombing will bring down the overall score greatly, skewing the "majority opinion" statistics.

OT: Judging a game by anything other than a trusted person's opinion or your own opinion through playing seems idiotic and pointless to me, so I choose neither.

The fact is that more people said it was negative than positive. 2,323 gave a negative review, while 1,308 gave a positive one.

I..okay? I wasn't arguing whether or not more people gave it a positive or negative review. I wasn't arguing whether majority opinion was right or wrong. I was pointing out a blatant flaw in your logic, which you are now covering with a statistic that didn't have anything to do with what I was talking about.

Just because I don't like Twilight, I have to accept that it is recognized as good by many, many people. Why? Because of sales. Also, because it's popular enough to warrant unnecessary hate. The point being, children on the internet will vote more things negatively, than they do acknowledge things that are positive.

Lets look at the numbers this way...

CoD has 1,308 positive user reviews, Skyrim only has 588. So the people have spoken, and more think CoD is a great game.

*Slams another beer.

"This is fun!"

; )
THERE. A good argument for one side or another! I'm not even biased towards one side, I just wanted an intelligent debate on majority vs sales. So far, I've gotten ad hominems and non sequiturs.
