I have a have a place in my heart for the Tales of series and i believe it is a proper way to do a rpg. If you like/love it tell me why. I normally hate anything doing with anime or "anime" games but this is an expection to that.

What i want to know

1) Favorite game.
2) Favorite scene.
3) Favorite Characters
4) Character relationships (love or friendship)
5) Best villians
6) best weird scene
7) Best ending
8) Other

Mine

1) Favorite game: Tales of the Abyss just because it is the stand out of the serie with just by the main character alone and his story but it also has 5 other character with unique stories that you have to discover
2) Favorite scene: The skit in tales of Vesperia where you make the party eat sorburt/ice cream in subzero wheather and they just suffer for it.
3) Favorite Characters: I can't choice between Jade, Repede, Sheena, or Marik
4) Character relationships (love or friendship): Tie between the love between Emil and Marta or the friendship of the guild Brave Vesperia both are really well done. Second place goes to Asch and Luke.
5) Best villians Curxius the holy angel that arent so holy but their not so evil either
6) best weird scene: Tales of Symphonia when Lloyd gets his pirate costume.
7) Best ending: Tales of the Abyss not going to spoil that
8) Other

I picked up Tales of Graces F this year. I am a big fan of JRPGs, but after about 7-10 hours (when they grow up in the game) I really wasn't having fun, and stopped playing it. I kind of felt like I wasn't doing too much in the combat system. It felt simplistic.

Now let me qualify this with saying I don't think I gave the game a fair shot, honestly. If you could recommend me a Tales game, I'd love to try it. Which one would you recommend to a newcomer of the series?

Grace is not the game you start on I only recommend playing it after you have beaten a couple of the other games. I suggest Tales of Symphonia (if you have a gamecube) to start. Its a great game with a good story, it does start out very cheezey with choosen one must save the world but it quickly takes a dark turn and everything changes. There are alot of amazing voice actors in the game back before they become more well known like Jennifer Hale, Scott Menville, Tara Platt, and Crispin Freeman. Then move on to the sequal Tales of Symphonia Dawn of a New World (for the Wii) which is just as good if not better.

If you dont own any of the Nintendo systems then i recommend the ones for PS2. Tales of the Abyss is my favorite one but i recommend that you play one before Abyss.

Then of course there is Tales of Vesperia which I am still playing but if it ends strongly will easily pass Abyss as my favorite but it is for Xbox. Tales of Vesperia has the greatest characters for any rpg they are some of the most human characters i have ever come across.

1) Favorite game -Eternia. Just because it was my first and honestly have thought the Tales games have not been for the better since leaving sprite based characters behind.

2) Favorite scene - Discovering that you get to g to Celestia instead of just hearing about it. Comparable to the feeling of getting to the upside down castle in Symphony of the Night. In other words, elated.

3) Favorite Characters - Jade. God bless Namco for making an anctually interesting character for once. Snark always wins.

4) Character relationships - Never cared

5) Best villians - The craymels from Eternia, especially the super hard optional ones on Celestia. You pretty much felt like you were killing gods.

I generally go hunting for JRPG's anyway, the Tales series is right up there in my "most sought after" category.

I simply love the Tales series. My favourite game is a tough decision. Tales of Symphonia will always have a special place in my heart for being the first game I got to play. However I think I have to go with Vesperia. I love the characters, I love the story, I love the graphics and I love the gameplay.

My sister is a huge fan of the series and I watched her play Vesperia, I loved what I saw but the combat didn't really appeal to me, I have a 3DS and I hope to pick up a copy of Tales of the Abyss while I am vacationing here in America.

I did love Raven a lot though, he was hilarious.
Uhm, the 3DS is region locked and Tales of The Abyss was released in Europe. Judging from your profile you're better off not buying it in USA unless your 3DS is imported.

I liked Symphonia, Phantasia, Vesperia and Abyss. That's pretty much it. I've played some of the other games but just didn't enjoy them that much - like Eternia.

What's the best game in the series for someone to start with? Especially for someone who isn't normally in to JRPGs?

I like the Tales of series. In this generation it delivered the IMO best JRPG: Tales of Vesperia.
That said I do not like all games nor have I played them all due to the fact that the series is rather fragmented.
Many games were never released in the EU (Destiny, Destiny 2, Rebirth, Legendia, Abyss, Innocence and Hearts... fuck it would be easy to name the ones that made it...) and the series jumps from platform to platform making it even harder to follow it.

My favourite of the lot is Tales of Vesperia and Dhaos from Phantasia is the most memorable villian for me.

I still plan to pick up Graces f when it is released this August and I'm looking forward to Xillia.

I got my 3DS here in America, so I am fine.

In that case it's cool. However if you don't like the combat in Tales of Vesperia then there's a good chance you wont like Tales of the Abyss either. I love it though and consider it the best 3DS game there is.

1) Tales of the Abyss, I would like to say Vesperia but I never actually finished it which I will elaborate on later
2)...to be honest I can't really think of one (too many to choose from)
3)Main Protagonists: Yuri is my favorite though Luke does come in at a close second. As for supporting characters; Jade, Raven, Judith, Kratos, and Flint
4)Well I guess I would say the friendship between the members of Brave Vesperia and as for couples I guess I'll put down Luke and Tear though their interaction can be irritating at times.
5)Van, Asche (does he count as a villain), and Dis
6)For some reason the scene in Abyss where Jade interrogates Dis came of as weird to me. Other than that I can't think of any other weird scenes off the top of my head.
7)I'm gonna agree with the OP and also go with Abyss' ending.
8)Favorite OPs: two way tie between Tales of the Abyss (english/instrumental version) and Vesperia (english version) and in second would be Xilla's OP

Now about why I never finished Vesperia. I was about 3/4 of the way through the game when I had to leave for college. Later on I read that the Xbox 360 version of Vesperia was actually not the complete version and that the PS3 version of Vesperia would be complete version, which was never released outside of Japan. Knowing this was quite disheartening and infuriating, and as a result I never could bring myself to finish the game. So my question is this. Does anyone know if any important elements such as story were left out of the Xbox 360 version? Also I'm aware that Flint is a party member in the PS3 version.

As far as I'm aware, the Xbox version only misses out on a party member, some little girl who thinks she is a pirate and is in love with Yuri or something like that, as far as a complete story goes, the Xbox version never felt like it was missing out on any story elements to me. The PS3 version might have an expanded story, but the Xbox version certainly doesn't have an unfinished one

1) Probably a toss up between Abyss and Symphonia. I liked them both a lot, especially the characters, but I liked the combat better in Abyss just because there was more freedom of movement.

2) I'm not sure what my favourite scene is because there's a lot of them. The ending for Abyss, I guess. :/ I really liked the ending to Symphonia too and a couple of scenes for Legendia were really good too ? the ending for Moses' character quest stands out.

3) Jade, Zelos, Kratos, Moses, Jay, Guy, Chloe, Decus, Raven, Yuri, Rita... I could go on.

4) I really liked the relationship between Moses and Jay in Legendia along with Chloe and Senel's (even though Senel is denser than a brick wall). But Asch and Luke's relationship was also done really well and I liked it.

5) Hm. Mithos was good. But also Mohs because I just love to hate him because there's nothing redeemable about him at all. Van was good too.

6) I'm not sure...?

7) Abyss, definitely.

I seem to like all the ones Fujishima had a hand in.

So yeah, all of those have been hits.

Abyss while enjoyable suffered from some obnoxious loading times on my small Ps2.

While Symphonia did not, so it only barely overtakes Abyss if only convenience sakes.
Plus I am a huge fan of Lloyd. I think he was one of the few protagonists of a game I've really enjoyed seeing develop.
