It depends on how dirty the floor is, how moist the food is (thus holding more obvious dirt), and the mood I'm in. Usually I'll just decide to throw it away but, I've taken it of the floor before. I have the immunities of a young person, I'm not likely to get sick.

thread is getting popular :p

btw, some of you seem to think that this poll is based on science. its not lol

its a psychological poll. people assume that the longer food is on the floor, the germier it gets... so thats what the poll is about, for the most part. besides, even if youre well aware that time passage doesnt play much of a role in how filthy floor-food becomes, im sure you still dont take your sweet time picking food off the floor when you plan on eating it. i still pick it up in a hurry

If the floor is clean, then maybe but normally never. Does the ten second rule still apply if I drop a cookie in some dog shit? lol xD

If the floor was covered in drunken, diseased waste, I would still eat it.
I have very little regard for my personal health. Plus, I get sick just SEEING a runny nose, so trying extra hard to avoid germs just seems like a waste of time.
I'm already going to be ill for some reason, why not make it because of some stupid shit I did.

I don't believe in any of these "rules", three second, five second, ten second, but I'll be DAMNED if a fucking floor is gonna dictate what I eat.

Fuck you, floor!

It depends on the floor in question. If I just cleaned it, sure. If it's someone elses' floor, or I've put off the weekly mopping, then no.
This is the key here. If it falls in the dirt or in the street, I won't. If it falls on my kitchen floor, I probably will. It's just so clean!

Unless the food is something sloppy and hard to pick up.

I follow the 5 second rule unless the food is visibly dirty.
Pretty much this.

If some of my food falls onto the grounds, I'll pick it up and see if there's any dirt or hair on it.
If there isn't any dirt or hair on it, I'll eat it.
If there is dirt and/or hair on it, I'm throwing it out.

If the floor and or food isn't moist I follow the 10s rule. If I drop something moist on the floor I'll let the dog eat it, because hair and grit really does nothing for me.

Depends on the floor
Depends on the food
If its something that hair and such will stick to I won't eat it.

If its clean yes. Besides i know someone who ate something that had been lying in a puddle for about 3 weeks, and another who picked chewing gum off a table put it on their dick then ate it.
What the fuck!?

OT: all floors in my house are wooden, if its something like a bit of chocolate or a smartie i'll go by the 5 second rule (no scientific merit to it, just feels ok to eat if less than 5 seconds)

If it were bacon however, i would finish my meal and give that courageous, delicious bacon a viking funeral.

Or just give it to the cat or something.

I go by a 2 second rule, unless the object is something wet, in which case it's not worth it. I work in a hospital now part-time; my workplace offers enough opportunities to get sick without me jacking up the chances further by eating food off the floor (even if I just cleaned it an hour ago).
If not for that, though, the 5-second rule would be good enough for me. Especially if the food in question was bacon.

If the floor's clean, I'll just wipe it off and stick it back on the plate. If it's got bits of dust and stuff on, though... egh.

I think they actually did a study on this and on your average floor (meaning what most people would call 'clean') it would take about 5 seconds (I think it was five) for any germs to latch itself onto the food. Obviously the dirtier the floor the less time it would take but I usually don't mind eating food if I quickly pick it up.

I'm sorry where did you read this? This is bullshit, if its on the ground for 1 second or 5 seconds it doesn't make a difference its still gonna be dirty
I can't remember where I heard this or who did the study so I'm not saying it's definitely true it's just what I've heard.

I go with the "I can't see anything wonky on it" rule. If it looks OK I'll eat it.

I seem to remember the Mythbusters busting the 5-second rule, but I like letting my stomach acid work for its rent.

Depends how clean the food is. Hairs are yuky. Some is visible dirt and grime. Otherwise, yummy yummy food! :D
