I'm actually not so sure the TF2 community has been any more decent than any other such.

Yes, generally speaking, I've had a very pleasant experience playing the game.
However, I suppose I might just be more sensitive to the stuff, but if I had a penny for every gay slur I've seen tossed around by players in that game...
Well compared to a lot of CoD matches and some other F2P games I play (namely League of Legends), TF2 had a really well mannered and generally friendly atmosphere. Not all of the time by any means, but miles ahead of many other games.

This.

And just as a heads up, you might want to avoid those caps in case a moderator is in a bad mood, it's technically against the forum rules. (I'm not trying to be an asshole, just pointing it out for you)

Hey, just starting this with a bit of a rant. I love TF2. It's one of my favourite games. Well, it WAS. Since September 30, 2010, The MannConomy update, TF2 has been on a slippery slope to complete ruin. Today, it's finally happened.
TF2 is dead.
First, it started with the items.
Being able to buy them.
The constant, neverending stream of crappy, pointless community items with only miniscule, barely noticeable stat changes.
More and more and more items, completely burying us under pointless community content.

The final straw came today.

The Uber update introduced free to play forever. Team Fortress 2 is now open to the public to play forever for free.

Now, every server is crammed with hundreds of people who, in all likelihood, have no interest whatsoever in the game. Most times, when you get a new player, they want to get better, want to get good at the game, want to actually do something with themselves. When a game is free to play, however, a time dreaded by most who already own it, this is when the absolute assclowns and griefers come out to play. They don't care about doing well or getting better, they didn't pay a cent, they just want to ruin it for everyone else. What do they care? They didn't pay for it.

The thing that I take offense to the most, though, is what they decided to offer those who already paid for the game.

We get a hat.
We ALL get a hat. The same hat.

This hat is just an insult. When other games have become free to play, they offered some sort of compensation to the people who actually paid the $20 for it. We get a hat. They're insulting us. They're waving their bloody item system, the start of all this crap, in our faces and taunting us for actually caring enough to pay for it.

(p.s. There ARE differences between free and paid for games. Paid for [you have to pay at least $1] get to wear hats. That's about it)
First, get over yourself. EVERY time that Valve has made TF2 F2P, it caused a raid of the servers. People are interested in seeing what TF2 is all about.

Second, the stats. The game pronounces different strategies for a person based on what class they are. Spies can be quiet efficient killers that are damn near invincible with the right combination. However, they won't automatically lose to the new weapons. And if you can't tell the different between the Cloak and Dagger and the Dead Ringer, you have a problem, not anyone else.

Third, the community. There's been modders, server owners, noobs, and casual players all over the map. This is actually enhanced now that Valve has allowed these people MORE ways to add value to the game. Without the $20 price tag, more people have access in various ways. Create a story on Youtube. Make a mod. Make the game interesting to you, the individual.

Fourth, hats. Yes, this is Hat Fortress 2. You get to differentiate yourself with your hats. Be they free or just promotional tools, they're there. No one says you have to use one. It's not imperative to use it for any set. Hell, you can have fun collecting them if you want. No one is stopping you. But it's your choice to look at the game as a hat simulator or go around with the uber cabal and blow shit up.

All in all, this rant is all about seeing the negatives and not really being fair to the people that put up a lot of effort into making TF2 a much better place.

I understand where you're coming from; I for one had to beg my mum to buy me this game AND NOW IT'S FREE?! And the compensation sucks, at the very least, they should've given us a calss item pack(of our choice) rather than a hat.

Games 4, nearly 5 years old. alot of people got it with the orange box. tf2, portal, hl2 + episode 1. 4 games for £16 or however much you paid for it. Over the years we've had around 6 gig of free content. If you want to pay for it then that's your choice, you don't have to you can just play the game. So stop crying about. you got 4 great games for the price of one and alot of free content. Any other game/company and you would have to pay for it all.

If you dont like the new items, join a vanillia server. or play some league matches or something.

Here's the thing:

You must have paid for the game a long while back (if not, you didn't really waste all that money, and if you did, shame on you for not capitalizing on dirt-cheap sales).

Whenever it was, at the time, it was worth at most thirty dollars (barring Australian lunacy).

I don't know about you, but I feel like those four years of fun have already been well paid for, and everything else is just icing on the cake. That they can still get new players to join this game and they continue to update this game is far more worthwhile than any "waste" of money I could have spent four years waiting for.

I understand if they made it free, like, one year after the game was released. But it's not. I've had my fun. Everything else is just Valve's gift to the users.

On the one hand, if you watch the TF2 developer commentary, one of the nodes talks about how they very specifically designed all the classes to be visually distinct, even in silhouette. All these new hats and items, especially the ones that can be worn by all, compromise this somewhat.

The counter to that is that this is still true for vanilla servers, especially professional leagues, where it might matter that bit more.

On the other, I like that they're keeping the game fresh with new maps (and you're not having to pay for them like blops/bfbc2) plus new weapons, keeping things interesting. It's quite difficult to keep a multiplayer game interesting in terms of progression and such, and I think Valve are doing a good job there. It's just a shame what they've had to compromise to do so.

Was it worth paying £40 (or however much is was back then) for Portal, HL2, EP1 and EP2, and TF2 almost 4 years before it'd go free to play? You betcha.

Does it kinda suck that the only thing special I get for that is a hat that competes with my Houwar, Monarch, and all my other cool hats that I have to choose betwen which I wear? A little. The Platinum misc. slot badge has always been much better imo; I would have preferred an upgraded version of that (and, if Valve haven't thought of that, it can't be that hard to do).

Trolls exist in paid for games just as much as free to play games. Ever played BF:BC2? Jump into a chopper, get gunned down by some retard noob on your team and then watch as he jumps in and just crashes the chopper constantly.

I don't mind more people playing, I do mind that Valve went oh right we had old players here's a crappy hat. Basically I paid 20 bucks to get a hat much later on and I have to say that really sucks. And people can become premium members just by buying one 2.50 item from the store that is just unfair to those who paid more.

I was excited that there would be more people playing tf2 at first... then i realized how many of those new players will be idiots. play any free to player shooter and you will know what i'm talking about.

I'm sorry OP but I don't get your point at all. This just shows that whatever you do, there are always people who will complain. You paid a fair price for it and you've received a great experience until now for that money. I don't see how that changes anything now. For you it shouldn't matter at all because it doesn't affect you at all. There is no rule that if a game goes free to play, all the new players will be idiots.

All I see is a guy who's basically elitist about who plays in HIS game because they wont be up to HIS caliber of skill.

Honestly the only reason I never got the damn game is because I was both lazy and had other games on my to get list, but since I can now play for free you think that's wrong?

Honestly get your head out of your ass and let some other people who might want to get into the game have their fun. If you don't like it then leave

I find it amazing people will ***** about it going free to play years and years after they purchased the game. Look at this way if this game was produced by anyone but valve you would of got a single free update to take care of some of the more obvious and game breaking bugs then every few months you would of got a DLC map pack with 3 maps you could download for 15 bucks. Then a few years after the game is released that even stops. A few years after that the would officially stop supporting it, close down the game forums and turn off any servers they were running.

Instead we've gotten years of free updates and a game that is so much better than the produce I bought years ago in the orange box.

Man, it astounds me, like literally has me speechless, about how much rage people are having over it going Free-To-Play. I saw that and said, "Neat, more people!", and wondered if the vets would get anything. I didn't expect so, but they gave me a hat. I'm content. I've logged over 800 hours into the game, I bought it at release, and it's still the only game I go back to constantly.

The items haven't done ANYTHING to change how the game is. People use a variety of stuff in every game I've played, which shows that nothing is OP, since so many people use different items. I main Medic, always have. I shall continue to main Medic. And continue to enjoy the game I've watched grow up since it's birth. :D

Also: The Quick-Fix is awesome. New favorite Medigun.

To be honest, the silhouettes haven't changed, other than the vertical ones. The models are still super easy to tell apart, since they are each a different height, width, and weight.

I thought Premium players got more than a new hat. Like much greater inventory space, full fledged item trading system, complete crafting (as opposed to the limited that the freebies get)...
