You seem to believe you're some sort of superior being because you pay for your games. It doesn't make you any better vs the people who play F2P.Why would someone bother to download a 10gig game to go in the server and ruin it?Of course there are going to be newbies but if they like the game they'll stick around. Also this is the first time I've heard someone complain that a developer is burying you with content or that you'll have more people playing the game.

Also remember that we're still bound by Stream's law of conduct.Aka we can't be asshats without repercussions.Personally I buy stuff on Steam from time to time and I wouldn't go out of my way to get the prices go up because I decided to ruin your precious previously paid game. You sound like the idiots that gave day 1 1/10 score reviews on Portal because it had optional hats that don't change your gameplay in any way.

Free to play was a good idea,
but I do agree... the MannConomy update destroyed it for me... just the hats in general did.
So before that update, it pushed me over the edge.
I loved the achievements to get items system, it was perfect. Experienced players would get the weapons slowly, they could do it easily for classes they felt comfortable with. New players could immediately dive in and feel like they're earning something.
A purchase does not feel like you've earnt it.

Balance was lost most of all.
BALANCE.
The game was about balance.
Recognisability was lost with the hats too! I MEAN COME ON, the silhouettes were important!
Augh, what they've done just makes me sad. Mainly because I have higher expectations of VALVe.
The game is still great, but it's loosing its brilliance; funnily enough via content.

Hey, just starting this with a bit of a rant. I

First, it started with the items. god not free stuff

Being able to buy them. A company making money ??? How dare they !!! (you can get every item that can be bought free through crafting/trading/drops)

The constant, neverending stream of crappy, pointless community items with only miniscule, barely noticeable stat changes. Free stuff????? Not in my TF2 (Also screw all the game modes and maps that came out with these updates)

More and more and more items, completely burying us under pointless community content. Ok they did go over board with the items but you can easily play the game without ever opening your backpack to change items or buying anything also there are tonnes of servers that run vanilla no items tf2

The final straw came today. oh jesus what did they do? I hope they didnt give us more free content those mother fuckers

The Uber update introduced free to play forever. Team Fortress 2 is now open to the public to play forever for free. valve you son of a *****

Now, every server is crammed with hundreds of people who, in all likelihood, have no interest whatsoever in the game. this is false i have seen higher traffic but not "Crammed" Most times, when you get a new player, they want to get better, want to get good at the game, want to actually do something with themselves. So tf2 never had griefs before? When a game is free to play, however, a time dreaded by most who already own it, this is when the absolute assclowns and griefers come out to play. They don't care about doing well or getting better, they didn't pay a cent, they just want to ruin it for everyone else. What do they care? They didn't pay for it. They still have to download the game and put effort in, there are tonnes of f2p games which arnt full of griefs name one which is ? Also its tied to their valve account so they can get a VAC ban for griefing which affects more than just TF2 so registering a new steam account is needed to grief= more effort for little griefing reward
Closing statements :

You seem rather to have a fundamental dichotomy saying that adding payment is bad but free is also bad should valve of never ever done anything to the game? Or just taken the COD method of rolling out a new full price game every time they make a reasonable update?

Im not sure how long you have played tf2 i assume from the post its a while so i ask you to remember that 5 of the 8 game modes were in those free content updates as were most of the maps (half of which were community made) and valve did not make a penny of them apart from good word of mouth.

there is probably going to be a massive interest surge right now as people go "Zomg i heard tf2 is good now its free!!!" but eventually those numbers will die down the only people left will be committed players and the game will be richer for having them.

Just look at any other game that has gone free to play (Champions online, DDO, LOTORO, AOC ect)

Finally i just want to say i was really sarcastic in the quote so i mean no disrespect to you i just take fault with your ideals and all swearing was used in the interest of comic value.

EDIT: You did raise so good points here like we only get a hat but im not sure what they could give us instead apart from a badge ect which is the same thing, some free money to use in store would be nice but the store uses steam wallet so they would be giving out actually cash that players could use on anything not just tf2

As others have said, a wait a week or two, by then, if the game is still flushed with grievers and trolls, or whatever else, than I guess it really is dead.
Played it for 2 hours this morning. Good game still. Few more RQ's than normal but no difference.

Honestly, in general the people that play it can't be any worse than before, and there will be some new people who genuinely want to play the game. Valve doesn't owe you anything.

Though, I am disappointed they gave a hat. I hate hats, I'd rather just have a weapon or something.

I think its great that the game is free, quite a few of my friends are now downloading it already and looking forward to playing it! Since we students are not the most funded people in the world.

Mann Store makes sense for it to fund the game, people get impatient and buy the items instead of saving, I know I've been there, and I love the game so I am supporting it and the community developers a little.

We will get a lot of new... mixed blood that is for sure, but new people non-the-less.

One thing I'm dreading more than anything is that, premium servers are going to go off the charts.

Oh and for those annoyed that they paid for a game that is now free, and they get little compensation, just stow it. The game has been out since 2007! You've enjoyed it for that long! You've cared for it that long! You've supported it that long! And you got a lot of fun for it by only paying once, if you didn't Mann. Store.

I'm not one for hats, I've given most of mine away in lotteries, but I love the gameplay items, can't wait to try the quick fix.

How exactly were you buried? Are you forced to wear a hat? If the stat changes are really so miniscule, doesn't that ensure you don't need a hat to compete?

When a game is free to play, however, a time dreaded by most who already own it, this is when the absolute assclowns and griefers come out to play. They don't care about doing well or getting better, they didn't pay a cent, they just want to ruin it for everyone else. What do they care? They didn't pay for it.
Really now? How many free games are there out there in the world? Champions Online is free. Do you know why I'm not playing it right now? Because I have no interest in it. People don't just run around playing games they don't like just to bother you.

If someone is playing the game, they're interested in it. They may, however, be new. That means they don't have an established strategy, or a bank of experience, or a core team they play with. So they may do things you think are stupid or griefing. And when insulted for it, rather than helped, they may very well lash out and talk like a griefer.

The thing that I take offense to the most, though, is what they decided to offer those who already paid for the game.

We get a hat.
We ALL get a hat. The same hat.
That's not what you paid for. You know what you paid for? Playing the game all this time. That's what your money bought you. It didn't buy you stock in the game's future, or any sort of right or entitlement. You paid to get the game earlier than the people just starting now, and that's exactly what you got.

Yeah, it always stings a bit when something goes on sale the day after you pay full price, but it happens. It isn't done maliciously, and it's not done to you.

You're grossly overreacting to this. Give it a couple weeks, and you'll be just fine--or you'll move on to another game.

If all the new content is that much of a problem for you, I'm pretty sure I've seen a few anilla servers around so you don't have to worry about people using the new weapons. Also I have no idea how you can say a game is dead by saying that it's going to get an influx of more players, surely a game is dead when nobody plays it any more?

Every time an update comes out, people complain about it for mostly good reasons. Then, complaints subside as the update settles into place and the bullshit diminishes. See Scout update.

I'll say this. The update and the F2P should not have come out at the same time. All the Steam server services were down. No store or loadout.

I for one am looking forward to downloading it. I've known about it for a long time, and the idea appealed to me, but I just never got around to play it. Now, it's summer, it's free, why shouldn't I play it.
But, while I can see why you're upset, I doubt the introduction of F2P will affect the game in any way.

I played the game tons before the Engineer update a year or so ago. Then SC2 came out and TF2 started to decline with less-than-awesome updates and those goddamn hats. I play it every now-and-then, but not as much as I used to. It's just not the same game anymore I did 1,5 years ago :(

It would be nice if they didn't screw with the servers, it's harder to get on the old ones now.

Free hat and continued game support perhaps?

Also something came to mind, what if someone buys the retail copy in a store, do they still get a premium account game wise? Just read about the free account limitations.

The game has been pretty much as close to free as you can get without actually being free, first with it comming with the Orange Box and then with the christmas sales.

It's a good move by Valve, free games mean more people on Steam, which means more people exposed to the Steam store, ad to that the sales from items in TF2 and the fact that a larger TF2 player base means hats as pre-order bonuses are more appealing.
