As it will probably lead to me actually playing TF2, I like it. But they should definitely have given you guys more.
Anyway, any tips for a newbie?

Soldier: Easy class to play somewhat. Shoot at the feet of enemies for maximum efficiency. Does the same damage, and has an AoE so it's harder to dodge. Try to practice "Rocket Jumping" when you can, it makes the Soldier one of the most maneuverable classes in the game and is awesome for getting the "jump" on someone.

Demoman: Good Beginner Class. If you use the Stickybomb launcher, put them in places hard to see from where the enemy is coming from, like around the inside of a doorframe if they are coming from the outside. Right click to explode all your stickies. The grenade launcher has a nice distance if you arc it right.

Heavy: Another beginner class. Hold the Right Mouse to spin up your minigun. Walk forward. Fire at enemies.

Scout: SUPER Advanced level. Don't use him until you are comfortable, he can pretty much solo any other class, but is super twitchy and movement based. You need to know the levels, how to dodge, how to double jump effectively, etc.

Pyro: Kind of tough. You NEED to learn the levels and how to airblast to use him fully. Despite being listed as an Assault class, he is very "sneak attack" based. Get behind the enemy and cause chaos. Airblasting lets you deflect rockets back at the shooter and will make you pro among men if you master it. I can hit like...every 5th or so. >.>

Engineer: Please build teleporters on Offense. Please. Other then that, build forward bases if you are attacking. Consisting of Teleporters, Dispensers, and Sentry guns near the front lines. Beating things that are building with your wrench makes it build faster-Useful tip. On defense, put your sentry somewhere hard to get to, with a good sight range on the objective area. Tip: Right Clicking with the blueprint out will rotate the blueprint.

Sniper: Go for headshots, and don't worry about a full charge on your gun if you can take the shot. A non-charged (charging happens when you are scoped) headshot deals 150 damage, flat out. Two quick shots like that will take out every non-Overhealed character. 3 will kill anything.

Spy: Another really advanced class. Even I can't do well at it with how paranoid the Vets are now. I can pretty much spot an enemy spy disguised 100% of the time, unless he comes up behind me. Tricks to mastering it: Don't be suspicious. Don't run into the enemy base, stick to the back of the crowd. When disguised, you have collision with the enemies, and that is the biggest giveaway. You don't collide with your teammates. So avoid bumping into anybody.

Medic: Try to heal everybody who needs it, it charges your Uber (invincibility) faster when they aren't full health. Go into game settings and set the game to show people under a certain amount of health. Mine is set to 50% and it basically shows health flashes for anybody who is low on health so I know where to go and who to heal. Use your Uber wisely, wait until the guy is lower on health (50 or so) before popping it for maximum timing.

Any further questions, feel free to ask. I'm a nice veteran. ;)

TF2 was always an optional freebie for me. I got the Orange Box for EP1 & 2 and Portal. The achievement weapon unlocks were great but with all the other subsequent additions it ended up being frustrating trying to know what to look out for.

So I don't care if it's free now, I've no desire to play it anymore.

You know what those people who bought the game full price (most of which bought it in one of the best deals in gaming history, The Orange Box) got other than a hat?
Four years to play the game BEFORE anyone who got it for free gets to play it. Essentially, you got the game four years in advance. And you're complaining to me about being shortchanged? Sure, the one hat is a little less than I would have expected (I would have given vets a slightly bigger package than that), but calling it an "insult" is definately overreacting.

How going free-to-play is a bad thing in any way just baffles me. Griefers and trolls exist on any server regardless of whether the game is free or not. Yes, this will cause an initial increase of such annoyances, but do you really think the people just getting on NOW to cause trouble will stay for very long? Nope, they'll either leave themselves after getting bored or get banned and leave a thriving, healthy community that just got a whole bunch more people to play with, ensuring that the TF2 servers stay alive, thriving, and healthy for years and years to come.

I just finally got TF2 with the free-to-play update, and I am over-the-moon excited to become a part of the community. I want to be able to get into one of the greatest online multiplayer experiences of all time and become part of a great community that supports each other and just has fun with the game. I'm not coming to cause trouble, I just want to enjoy the experience. I'm sure there are thousands of people joining now with the same viewpoint, and by joining with the veteran players we can make the game continue to remain interesting and fun.

im ok with the F2P thing, this means that i can way more easily convince my other friends to start playing now that its free. we wont have to worry about all our servers getting full since more players will means more people willing to run their own servers.

griefers wont be a problem because its very hard to be a dick in TF2 (except for via headset but those people usually get kicked rather quickly)

The Mann.Co store wont matter if you don't care about it because you can still find all the weapons in it like usual. Also you cant "pay to win" because all weapons have both a + and a - to them. (however i think the items are very overpriced)

I do agree that the compesation was kind of lame tho. we should have gotten a bunch of credit on the mann.co store instead (or maybe a free indiegame or something).

I dont think TF2 is dead. we just get more mates to blow up.

You know what?
THE MORE THE FUCKING MERRIER.
I like having well populated servers and a diverse bunch of people to play with, both like myself (I try my best but am utter shit) and the good players. I only hope that there isn't too much elitism about who bought it/ who got it for free because it's a great game and it's great that now more people can play it. I think I'm alone in seeing this as a good thing.

Sorry what? I'm just here playing with my bots, didn't hear you there. Pardon me if I don't care about online multiplayer. Me and my bots are going to go have some fun in an awesome game. Or hell, maybe I can convince my friends to get it too, and we can all play with bots, now that it's free to play.

To be completely honest with you TF2 already had a shitty community full of assclowns who had only just discovered the wonders of HLSS and decided to inflict us all with idiotic soundclips from forced 4chan memes.

Missing an option for
What is TF2?
let me give a basic idea. it's a bright coloured cartoony FPS with classes witch gives new updates every so often this may result in a big event or new hats witch are the only way of distinguishing yourself from the other players.
hat's have become a big deal for some players and drop rarely and some can be bought.
there are some other small gimmicks but that's the main thing about it i guess

As for the $20 thing, how is this any different from the numerous times it was offered for $2.50?

At any rate: Who cares, they finally released a new "Meet The." Now all that's left is the Pyro. I'm taking bets on what will come first: HL2E3/HL3 or "Meet the Pyro."
HL3. Mhe, I am waiting for Meet the pyro since the first meet the.

Mybe it will have some headcrab joke in it?

Why do you just play with bots? I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, I just think it's a bit unusual for a game that focused on multiplayer.

OT: I think it's a good move overal by valve, but I think people who have already bought it should get more than just an old hat.

Well mainly because bots are free of all the different defects that people have and use while playing. Griefing, trading, being vindictive, so on and so forth.

I'm yet to see an example of a situation where a medic would benefit from having the bonesaw over the ubersaw, however having the ubersaw cangive a much needed invuln and turn the tide of a battle. If the medic needs to swing a second time to get a kill, chances are he's about to be dead anyway.

Unlimited range and the ability to choose targets more than compensate for the ability to miss (shooting obvious spies is damn helpful, as is sniping opposing plays/sentrys from afar). Taking the wrangler does not force it's use, it replaces the pistol which, while useful at times, can be substituted with the wrangler (a good engineer is never far from his sentry).

There are clear advantages of taking both of the above weapons without significant disadvantages

I've not seen the newest batch of weapons yet, but the introduction of new items certainly balances the game. Even weapons that are situational, having the option to use them if your team requires it (Natasha springs to mind) is hugely valuable.
I've never found the Ubersaw useful. A Medic who charges in is desperate anyway, and will die before getting his Uber off 90% of the time. Trust me, I main Medic. I use the Vita-Saw, or the normal saw since it's faster.
How is the extra 25% speed helpful?.....Ever? If the medic charges in, he's in trouble, you said so yourself. Why then, would the medic ever care about having a slight decrease in a close range melee weapon if it's only ever used as a last resort, or to finish someone off if they get close? The vitasaw also has its uses (though I don't bother, since I rarely hold ubercharge and it has a clear downside-less health).
The Wrangler is stupid easy to counter. The Engie has to manually control it, and as soon as he dies, the Sentry is as good as gone. Either take out the Engineer, or get one Demo close enough to stick a few stickies under it. I can take them out pretty quickly by popping the corner a few times and getting like 4 stickies there.
It can be countered with a demoman, but so can the regular sentry so that's not an inherent weakness in the wrangler. Remember as well, the engineer doesn't necessarily have to use the wrangler, they can save it and only activate it when there's something to snipe or a specific point to defend (up until it's activated, normal functioning sentry). The trade off is not being able to take pot shots with the pistol, which most engineers don't do at all anyway. Having control of the sentry is straight up more useful than having the pistol.
Valuable, but not game changing. The Natascha will get countered 100% of the time by a normal Heavy if they fire at the same time. If one gets the jump on the other, of course the one that fired first will win. Even as a Scout, the Natasha Heavies aren't that bad, just got to not charge them.
Natasha was an example of one of the better balanced guns, it can still win games and is damn fine, but it isn't necessarily better than Sascha.
Not to shut you down or anything, but the "balance is ruined" argument is kind of annoying.
The ruination of the balance is kind of annoying. Join a pub server and take not of how few players use certain weapons. I'm not saying classes are unbalanced, so the sniper comment is completely redundant, I'm saying that the weapon choices within classes are unbalanced. An engineer with the wrangler is better, and more frequently used, than an engineer with a pistol and the pistol is the starting weapon.

TF2 became quite unbalanced quite awhile ago, as I see it. The massive number of random new guns and such that were introduced kind of ruined it already, this is just a step in a similar direction to become more like Battlefield Heroes (although I dearly hope it won't become as clearly item-unbalanced as that game became).

I have yet to see a completely F2P game work well and be well balanced. Perhaps this will be the exception, but I'm really not too sure.

A while ago i bought TF2. The thing is I love everything about TF2 except for one thing, playing it. when I bought it I couldn't really do anything because anyone who was playing had been for a LONG time and were nothing short of experts. I'm hoping that this will introduce some fresh blood and i plan to pick it back up. As for your complaints about spending 20 bucks then having the game go F2P lemme ask you something; it looks like you have had the game for a long time and are very passionate about it. Given that, don't you think you've had at least 20 dollars worth of fun out of it? do you really think that some people experiencing this game for the first time is going to ruin it for you? And yes, I know they won't have an investment in the game to keep them going but that doesn't mean that they won't try.
Anyway unless I'm mistaken TF2 supports dedicated servers.
relax

Look at it this way.

With all of the new players, you'll have the perfect way to practice your spy backstabs.

Just sayin'.

But yeah. You're overreacting.

How is an influx of new players, regardless of intent, a bad thing? Isn't the point of a multiplayer game to have MULTIPLE PEOPLE playing?

It's been less than a day and I'm already frackin' sick of hearing people ***** about TF2 going free to play. These self-entitled twits are even going so far as to ***** about Valve giving them free stuff! For the love of God, grow up. Instead of bitching about it, either acknowledge the upsides (which far outweigh any cons), or go play something else. No one will miss your incessant whining. And, with the bevy of new players coming, our servers will be full and active.

Why not join the ranks of the COD "hardcore" players. Then you'll get your game that never changes over years of play. Hell, you won't even need to deal with the Mann Co. Store! 'Course, you'll have to spend $15 or more on a couple of extra maps, but that's okay. I mean, it's not like you can't just get them via an unlock or anything. Right?

[edit] To clarify, this isn't directed solely at the OP. I've been on a few servers this evening already and far too many people were whining about this latest update.
the influx of new, terrible people will be annoying, at least for a few months

the danger is that wiht free accounts there will be no incentive to behave in a decent manner, when you know you can just make another account or whatever whenever your old one gets hated/banned

also, the servers will be overfull. they're designed for current levels of traffic, not the new influx
