So Good Old Games is having this crazy deal http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/the_witcher and I have heard a lot of people talk about the game, but I never got around to getting it.

This price is ridiculously low, should I get it? Or does the game have a very niche appeal that may not please the "general" public?

EDIT: please explain why you voted which option.

It's definitely worth $5. Check it out I say.

It's a good game with an interesting story, but there are some flaws in it. First off, the control scheme is roughly equivalent to piloting a Gundam using a Commodore 64. There's buttons, menus, submenus and stances you have to keep track of and it can get overwhelming pretty quick. Once you figure it all out though, it's quite good.

Second, it's aggressively juvenile. It's clear that the developers were trying to make it grimdark and all that, but failed. My biggest problem in that regard (and the reason I couldn't get more than 20 hours into it) is that it takes a completely ridiculous and juvenile approach to sex. Basically, a rule of thumb in the game is if it has tits, it will try to fuck you. For no reason whatsoever. Then you get a little card memorializing the deed.

If you like that way of doing things, all the more power to you, but I got sick of the juvenile power fantasy relatively quickly.

Oh it gave off a very mature feel, I'm kind of disappointed now
The vast majority of the game, outside of the sex shenanigans, actually does a very good job. The world building is quite good, and the game does an excellent job of presenting meaningful, ambiguous choices to the player.

I just couldn't take the harem fantasy the devs threw in on top of it. If you can deal with that, or even like it for that matter, the Witcher is completely awesome.

No. It's too complex for its own good and the plot gets going slower than a dead elephant tapdancing. I paused playing for a week or seven and when I got back to it my sole thought was "What the fuck am I trying to accomplish anyway?" and promptly uninstalled it.

Unless you're strange and like painfully slow aimless talky RPGs with no tension whatsoever.

^This. Fortunately, 90% of the sexist/awkward sex stuff is basically skippable. There are two characters whose sex-related subplots makes sense and add to the story. One of them you meet in the first 5 minutes, the other might as well have "I'm an important NPC" stenciled on her forehead, so you can't miss them :)

EDIT: And, they appear to have learned their lesson for the sequel, so no more gratuitous sex scenes or stupid sex card minigame. They appear not to have grown out of the gratuitous nudity, but at least it should come off as something out of an R-rated movie and not as something out of Paladin of Shadows.

It's 5 bucks. Why the hell not?
This. If I weren't down to well under $1000 in my bank account, with no guarantee of getting a job before I go back to college in the fall, and an enormous backlog of videogames, I'd be getting out my credit card right now, because it's a darned good deal; I saw it used recently, and it was still $10. $5 is too good to pass up.

it's because you have white hair.

/sex drive to the infinite squared

OT: its a great rpg to try out for sure, especially for 5 bucks, the combat isn't amazing, its quite..odd...but once you understand it and the menu's its quite a fun rpg experience, i love it, and the 2nd one really looks like they took to heart what was "bad" about the first one, so the i can't wait for next week =]]

Dude, if I saw a game I had even just a passing interest in for five bucks, I'd buy it in a heart beat. That's a great deal any way you look at it. If it's great? Dude, you just got a great game for five bucks! If it sucks? Pff, so I'm out five bucks. That's less then a meal at McDonalds. Big whoop.

all i can say is YES buy it right now, especially if it's that cheap.
i personally love the combat and how fluid it can be. it has decent side quests. and idk something about it is just awesome. but it does start out rather slow and some of it can be confusing.
either way 5 bucks go for it

Yeah... because why not?

$5 can't buy you much else these days... If you have it lying around, go for it.

Definitely buy it.

It's cheaper than a burger, probably better nourishment, and I bet you payed 60$ for one of the "big ones" when they launched and you felt the same disappointment.

I got really butt-hurt about DA:O and Ass Creed 1... If only I'd waited :(

I would hesitate if it were the full price, but it's definitely worth $5. As others said, it's annoyingly immature - but almost solely when the main character opens his mouth. So yeah, that was my biggest complaint about the game: I wanted to punch the main character in the face most of the time. And the combat frustrated me, but in more of a rageful AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHH I SHOULD NOT HAVE DIED FROM THAT WHY WON'T YOU SWING YOUR GODDAMN SWORD GERALT WTF WTF WTF way. *shrug* Still a good game, overall, if you like this style of RPG.
