What's your opinion on the use of the word to referr to a girl?
I use the word in a nonformal setting to referr to someone that isn't really old enough to be considered a woman, you know like younger then 18. Before you call me a jerk or whatever, I use it because I have trouble pronouncing R's and L's when they're together in a word like "girl", or "really", or "Riley" (my name... yes I have trouble pronouncing my own name). It's just more comfortable and easier for me to say "chick".

I know it's offensive but I always use the word "chick". It makes a great verbal shorthand and doesn't come with the potential downsides that other single-syllable words have, like girl or babe.

Whenever someone tries to correct me I switch to the far more misogynistic 'gash'... of course why people try to correct me on that when I use '****' as a replacement for 'person' is beyond me.

It's still weird for me to think of us in either group. So I refer to people as male, female, chick, or dude depending on context and what I feel like calling them.

For some reason I've always found it sort of demeaning (and I'm a guy); I think this might be because I learned the term watching "Grease." I prefer using the term "ladies" - it can be either respectful, casual, or creepy pending the accompanying eyebrow gestures!

it's just a word. it can be used in a condescending manner, or it can be used in a neutral manner, or even a positive manner. It's all about context.

I've never heard of the word gash being used to refer anyone female or not.

I use it, but I don't think it's offensive at all. It's like calling a bloke a "dude" only it's a girl so it's a "chick."

I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

"Chick" comes from "chica", a Spanish term for "girl". It's dumb for it to be offensive, because it's simply imported from another language.
