You've probably never heard of a woman being refered to as a 'slurry' before, either.
A mixture of insoluble liquids? I don't get it.

I usually use "dude" or "women". It's pretty inappropriate to refer to say, a group of nuns as "a bunch of chicks dressed as penguins" though.
But they do look like penguins! I know, I spent time living with some nuns!

And as an ex-nun, I love referring to nuns in irreverent ways.

... sorry, that was off-topic. Here's the on-topic thought:

I think the offense or otherwise lies in the intent, not the word. So even harmless words can sound horrible with the wrong intent, just as what could be demeaning words can sound endearing or nice if used with the right tone.

QI
- Chick: 1927, from the Spanish "Chiquita". There is also a Shakespeare reference in Macbeth, with the line, "All my little chicks in one fell swoop."

Girl/boy

Guy/chick

It's just the slang term for women just as "guy" is the slang term for men. Neither are derrogatory and anyone that has a problem with it is too uptight and hug on political correctness. Besides, if chick is wrong to use, then they can't say "guy" either, and they all do.

I never understood the appeal of comparing girls to small fluffy birds. I'd find that kind of thing annoying.

Almost.

Guy/Gal

Stud/Chick

That's much closer in my mind. Comparing animals to animals.

Yea but who says "Gal" anymore? Guy/chick is pretty much the slag term settled on, regardless of it's origins

It sounds kind of dated. Not so dated that you can use it to sound ironically cool though. Just douchey.

I find it slightly derogatory, but not in a serious way. It's about as offensive as calling a friend who just stepped on your foot a "jerk."

I don't find it particularly offensive - it makes me think of baby chickens, which are cute and fluffy, so it's hard to take offense. To me, it's usually the tone that matters (unless the word is obviously pejorative like ***** or c*nt or something). I place it on the same level as 'gal', 'dude', 'guy' etc.

I never really found it to be offensive

I use it and I'm a....well I would use it to decribe myself here, girl dosnt seem right, neither dose woman...and female just seems a little too clinical

I did have a boyfreind who called me babe and for some reason I found that irritating

I use "girl" for females 12 and under, "chick" until they're, say, 25 or so, and "woman" after that.

I don't think I have ever used the term seriously. Or at all even. I don't see the appeal of it to other guys.

Would you be comfortable with females calling you a cock? If so, go ahead.
See, the masculine version of "chick" is "chick." You're thinking "hen" and most women get more than a trifle angry when you call them a hen.

I have never heard of a girl getting upset about being called a chick unless they're insecure about their gender identity.

"Oh noes, that gender model somehow threatens my individuality and I'm scared and angry at this!"

I guess since English is a secondary language i rarely hear it in the big world. And the folks i frequent on the internets rarely. I dont think ever uses it, and i would probably never called a lady 'chick' myself. I think if anything thats probably what i would accidently use as a short for chicken... *Lets eat chick today* If that was US i would have gotten some looks... So since i dont see why women cant be chicks i cant vote second. Since i dont use it i cant go first. And since i dont think you're an arse i cant go third. Can we please make an 'other' opion?

You would definitely get some high-fives for declaring your intention to eat chick. Rock on bro, rock on.
