Homework is an opportunity to reinforce concepts, get some practice at your own pace, and to prevent longer school days. I'm all for it.
I don't know about that. By the time the teacher was done baby-sitting, the whole set-up in high school felt a little superfluous. In short, school seems a little long as is. Students can complain about the time they spend on homework, but I think their energy would be better spent complaining about the time wasted in school by "pants-on-head retarded" peers. Oh, and mindless book-based teaching.
Eh, high school is kinda fuzzy. I don't remember the teacher having to babysit much after sophomore year. While some of the homework was pretty b.s. (I'm looking at you, spanish!) I liked having the chance to take my time and look at the problems on my own, especially the math.

Also, my school ended around 2, a reasonable time in my book, and senior year I got out at noon. I did have football/tennis practice after school anyway, so it seemed longer during the season.

Maybe the quality of the class correlates with the quality of the homework?

Homework can be both a valuable tool and a terrible curse... it all depends on how it is used.

Being set some arbitrary task that has no real connection to the work you've been doing in the lessons (or will be doing in a future lesson) is inherently pointless. If there is a connection but it's not reasonably clear to the student what that connection is, then it's the teacher's job to explain that satisfactorily to said student.

Of course, if the set task does have relevance to the class content and serves to either extend understanding of the subject or reinforce existing concepts, then that's a good example of how it should be used. The size of the task is also important - having to write a considerably sized essay isn't something that should be set as a homework assignment in this vein - smaller tasks tend to work better for learning purposes.

I should probably point out that this only really applies up to high-school level - once you hit college or university contact time goes down and the gloves are off as far as assignments are concerned, because you've more time at home to do them.

Homework and procrastination do not go together. How do you solve this? Either less homework, or less slacking off.

Yes, it is that easy. Instead of getting rid of homework, more focus should be put on how to study effectively: it's be better spent effort and money.

He said "stun" growth, and I picked that up in 4 seconds of reading, he is not exactly helping his case...

Homework in SMALL amounts, good. Overload, not so much. I'm lazy, but I can still manage, so I don't see the complaints having much logic behind them...

I was anti-homework until very recently. It seemed unreasonable that school was allowed to follow us home. (And in the last few years, my teachers were been lax enough with checking homework and friendly enough with me - as I'm a well-behaved and successful student - that none of them realised that I never did my work.)

Then I went to university, and found myself doing homework of my own accord, because - hey - it's actually an incredible learning tool. Who'd've guessed?

whoever says homework doesn't do anything is completely wrong. No exceptions.

Believe me, I am 15 and midway through my mock exam week. I learnt a lot of the stuff I am writing down from past homework's from the past weeks.

I don't particularly like it, just know that it is good.

I agree with removing it.
Last year almost all of my grades were As (or 1s, to be exact...it's numbers in Germany) and I never did any homework. Homework is unnecessary if you are motivated enough at school.
Besides, someone who isn't willing to learn isn't going to do it by doing homework he is compelled to do either. Most people I know copy them from other students anyway.

Edit: Besides, even young kids (10 years old and such) are spending 2-3 hours each day doing their homework. That's nothing I would want my kid to do.

How does homework promote Obesity!? He seems to pretend that instead of doing homework, children will go outside and exercise!
Reality: They'll just play Black Ops for 3 more hours a day.

Homework is important!

The reason homework exists is a necessity. I mean, students clearly are not learning enough from school, so either improve the quality of the education if you want to omit the option or seek alternatives to teach.

Either way, it's clear homework is extracurricular study activity. I'm not going to take sides so here's a thought: Would students try to learn further if it was removed?

what do you people want each class only gets like an hour and a smidge to try and teach you something. By the time everyone has settled its like an hour and most of that time is spent goofing off or doodling, thinking about when the class will end. If kids were serious they could live without homework, but they aren't so just take it like everyone else had to.

The fact that that petition looks like it was written by a recently migrated Eastern European gentleman is all the proof I need that homework is necessary.

Seriously, read in the voice of Roman from GTA IV, it makes perfect sense.

If you don't get homework, you have to go to school on weekends instead.

Simple.

Also, is it really THAT bad? I have the work ethic of a lazy chimpanzee and I'm currently not exactly drowning in homework...
No HW isn't really that bad, as long as you don't take AP Classes. My brother gets hours and hours of HW a night. So his schedule is like this:

Wakeup-school-after school classes for japanese-gym-Homework-sleep-repeat.

Basicaly, if there was less HW he would have more free time. which not to say that he doesn't enjoy the rest but I always see him doing HW. Though he doesn't really mind it.

I don't agree with homework anyway, but I found the best way to deal with it in high school was to not do most of it.

Now I'm a 6th form I'm fucked if I don't.

First of all, I didn't do any homework at all throughout high-school (or 3-4 years before that) and I passed with flying colours. I do believe that studies should be made on the matter before any decision is made, simply because we don't actually know how effective homework is as a way of learning. Also, remember that different people have different ways of learning, so don't be to quick to brush aside neither homework nor the idea of removing it if your only knowledge on the subject is your own experience.

I did love my science courses. Authors of the pre-calc book were a little lazy. Srsly guys, only throwing in ten moderately difficult problems before jumping to the challenge ones is not cool! D:<

Also, someone should inform the textbook authors that many teachers assign only odd problem so we can check them. So please start providing answers to all the problems. No sense in doing homework if I can't check it <__<

English was...hit and miss. Don't mind writing essays. The teacher was the hit and miss part.

Useful homework should be used all the time, stupid useless homework is just stupid though. I don't see the point in writing down what I did this Summer, although I understand why I need to write a Socratic debate between Aristotle and Sidney and their views on the Three Unities of theatre.

As someone who is currently in school I don't like the premise of homework but I do acknoladge that it is nessecary. Most kids, particullarly the younger ones (1-5 US, primary I think in the UK) dont absorb anything during the school day and homework is a medium for parents to say "get this done or else...".
