I think on a subconcious level everybody is biased towards obscure and popular stuff. All the more "undaground" nerd types are typically more biased against popular things and popular kids vice versa. I think that all the people that have voted "no" are lying or doesen't realize it.

We are all alittle biased...

Plagiarised ideas? Every movie is based on a book, or movie, or something. I admit, it was a dressed up Dances With Wolves, but that didn't affect my enjoyment of it. Lucky me, I guess.
Based, yes. Scene for scene repeating...that's bad.
Atrocious acting? Subjective. And I'm kind of mad at you for insulting Sigourney Weaver and Giovanni Ribisi. They're fantastic actors and I found no flaw in their performances.
Perhaps it was just the script.
Overblown special effects? Well, the movie was eye candy, and I for one had a feast. Are you saying the special effects were bad, or that there was just too much of them? If the first; bah, humbug. If the second; I can understand, even though I don't agree.
They were filler. You may have had a feast, but didn't you feel REALLY hungry later?
Invasive psychological tricks? Not really sure what you're referring to, but I'm sure you wouldn't have said it without reason.
If you have chance, look at the making of Avatar, and watch for things like Beauty versus Ugly, Redneck Recruits, Smoking Kills, Belief is Better. Watch how subtly they're woven into the dialogue and then try removing them from the dialogue and see how much you're left with.
Obviously I like the movie, and I won't tell you to like it, and I'm OK with you disliking it.
I'm cool with you liking it. As a "brain off" film, it's not a bad one at all. It just makes me froth with rage over the amount of money it got versus the better movies of the time.
I just think that anyone who considers it to be the worst piece of cinema they have ever seen - as in, ever, in their entire lives - can't have seen very many movies.
I'll have to come back to that, but it does hit rather hard in the "Missing the Damn Point" category of film; along with Starship Troopers.
For the record, I saw Plan 9, it was firmly in the 'so bad it's good' category. Hilariously bad.
Plan 9 is just the best damn terrible film out.

I love Harry Potter, the Beatles and other popular stuff but i dislike avatar (the blue guys avatar not the nickelodeon one, that one's fucking epic and i challenge whoever says otherwise to a battle to the death) and one of the reasons i don't like it is because what it's popularity caused.since avatar every movie has to come out with a crappy 3D option that i have to pay extra for even if i don't like it.

With that said,i don't automatically hate anything that's popular and the kind of people that do feel that they have to be unique and take pride at being the "underdogs" that go against the stream.it's not so hard to understand seeing that pretty much all of us search for a certain identity until we are content and stick with it,whether that identity is "hipster","emo",freak" and so forth.

You might find them annoying,i certainly do,but discussing their "stupidity" in a lengthy post seems redundant

I'm more critical of things that are popular and less willing to give it the 'benefit of the doubt'.

Now things that are popular because they are really good will make it through this test. However, things that are popular because they're the 'in' thing, or cool or otherwise trendy are unlikely to have the kind of quality to hold up.

I despise something that becomes popular when it's target audience is the LCD for its medium, because dumb and bland = $$$.

generally i find that things that are popular tend to have a fanbase of thick vain people who only like it because their friends like it. or because the original material is shit and all it's adaptations are shit and it's generally thanks to those gormless fuckwits that things like twilight and justin beiber are still around, standing, not on their own merits (they have none and in any sane society these things would not exist) but by how much money they make.

whoa whoa whoa...some people hate harry potter? well i hate them...

OT: I answered "Not Sure" because of Twilight. I have never read the books and I only saw the first movie, but the reason I hate (or dislike; hate is a bit strong) it is the fans. They annoy me to no end. So if the book weren't so popular, if the fans weren't so obnoxious, I never would have heard of it. Still, I guess that isn't solely because its popular.

Me and my GF had a massive argument about this last night strangely enough she said this is my reason for hating the harry potter and twilight books despite the fact they are formula's done before except in different settings. She decided to end the argument by saying that she wasn't an idiot and I was talking down to her and when I asked her where she got that idea from she told me i've done it pleanty time before yet she couldn't give any examples when I asked. So do I hate those series because they're popular? No! I hate them because twighlight is a boy meets girl romance novel with vampires and harry potter is your typical high school drama with magic, but try telling her that.

Nope, knee jerk reactions play a part though, I tend to be sceptical of things if they're wildly popular, but I always end up trying them out before actually forming a judgement.

I stopped liking Call of Duty after the first Modern Warfare because it felt like a very stale, bland experience to me, especially considering Modern Warfare 2 rehashed Modern Warfare's formula. I poured a couple hundred hours into the first MW and I just felt like I was playing the same game with MW2.

I disliked Harry Potter after the third book because the entire thing got so unnecessarily grimdark.

I dislike Avatar because...Well, I fell asleep half way through it. I legitimately found it to be fucking boring.

And Twilight? Well, I read the first book and it was just inane drivel, hence my dislike for that.

I don't generally dislike something because it's popular, but in my experience, the more popular something is, the worse it usually is.

This is easy to explain.

Half the population of the earth is average. At least half of what's left is below average. That's a huge demographic to make money from, and cash grabs are appealing. Therefore, most games/movies/music/products are made to appeal to the lowest common denominator, which would be average and below average people. Products made to appeal to this demographic, almost by definition, suck.

You're talking to a guy who thought the first Transformers movie was awesome, and who prefers The Chronicles of Riddick over Pitch Black.

I am, I suppose, easily seduced by shiny graphics. It's a character flaw.

Obviously I like the movie, and I won't tell you to like it, and I'm OK with you disliking it.

I'd ask for examples, but it's pretty safe to assume that you're right about that.

Still, I'm shamelessly anticipating the sequel(s). Avatar 2, wooh!

It inevitably emerges when someone who enjoys a popular and/or successful product encounters someone who does not. Common examples include Avatar, Call of Duty and Harry Potter.
I think the most common example is Justin Bieber. Also Twilight.

OT: I'm very open minded so no, i hate the idea of hating something for the sake of hating it.

I used to hate Cage the Elephant just because they were popular. It was the favorite band of three of my friends, so they would always play the same music and talk about the same band all the time. After they calmed down, I actually found I didn't mind CtE.

Haha, the poll should be changed to "Are you a hipster?"

Anyway, maybe. I'm not sure. I read the Twilight books because a friend of mine insisted I read them. (She claimed them to be better than Harry Potter, what?!) SO! I read all of four of them. Didn't like it for many reasons, but that was the end of it. Then the Twilight craze BLEEEEW UP. Then I actually started hating Twilight because I couldn't believe how people were going crazy for this dribble. I was especially annoyed when it was being compared to Shakespeare! Come on.

In my opinion, I would say no...but I'll let one of you decide.

I decided to dislike country music growing up because my dad disliked my music. After listening to it, most of it I still can't stand, but some of it isn't bad. I dislike my state football team because the rich ***** in my class loved them and it was her favorite. As I continued to get older, I still don't like them. Not because of her anymore, but because they're made to sound like gods given human form. Especially the coach. Nowadays, I don't like things for reasons that aren't influenced by others, but because I just don't like them. *shrug* Sometimes you just gotta grow up and decide for yourself.

Not purely because of the popularity, but as one of the first posters said, the hate can be easily multiplied when it's popular.
Example: I loathe the acting in Big Bang Theory. It is simply beyond me how anyone anywhere could find it funny. Yet people constantly ask me if I'm following the series. I rage, they say I just hate it because it's popular.

In the spirit of equality, I like to give things a fair chance before dismissing them. That being said, there is a ton of popular media out there that I personally don't enjoy.

In the case of movies...I've all but given up on them. Nearly every highly recommended movie in the last 10 years has not been to my liking. This includes movies like Lord of the Rings, Inception, Ironman, The Hangover, Wall-E, Almost Famous, etc.
