Somewhere in the video game world, Halo 3, Modern Warfare 2 and GTA IV are crying in a corner for being "too popular." Seriously, if you don't like something simply because it's popular, you need to smash your head into a wall and realize why you hate it.

A friend of mine says he hates the beatles all the damn time. But we all know he's just saying he doesn't like them because everyone else does.

That and other things. I'm anti-hype, which just means that when something is noticeably praised by nearly everyone whose job it is to have an opinion about it (critics, reviewers, newspapers, etc.), my knee-jerk reaction is to be suspicious. Popularity can be subjective, anyway, and to get you to show financial interest in a product, companies will usually only show the most positive reviews they can gain. There's nothing wrong with this practice but I have seen people who will blindly shovel their hard-earned cash in the direction of something without doing more research, and I just don't want to do that.

So yeah. Sometimes when I hear, "Everyone loves X so you're a fool not to love it, too," my response tends to be, "We'll see about that."

I saw avatar, thought it was okay. Too long, lacked heart, but fun. I didn't like it.

That dislike was aggravated into hate by all the god-damn fans who told me I had misinterpreted my own opinion and that avatar was, in fact, the best movie ever.

>_>

Since you're reading this on an internet forum, it's probably safe to assume you've all encountered this particular phrase or some variation thereof.

It inevitably emerges when someone who enjoys a popular and/or successful product encounters someone who does not. Common examples include Avatar, Call of Duty and Harry Potter. The accusation is generally accompanied by the suggestion that the 'hater' is motivated by the desire to be an independently minded person who does not simply follow the crowd.

...

Really? I mean... really?

Does anyone actually do this? Because I find it a bit hard to swallow.

Seriously, I'm curious. Have you - yes, you - ever decided to hate something purely because other people like it?

I don't hate something because it's purely popular, but a lot of games, movies, and books I dislike are popular. I have a unique taste.

However I do resent certain things for being popular because other things deserve it better.

I used to do that all the time when i was a kid. Fortunately, i grew out of it around 20. Now i try to be sure that i judge things on their own merits, rather than knee-jerk anti-populism. Thus, i don't dislike Twilight because it's popular, but rather 'cause it's frakkin' stupid.

In the spirit of equality, I like to give things a fair chance before dismissing them. That being said, there is a ton of popular media out there that I personally don't enjoy.

In the case of movies...I've all but given up on them. Nearly every highly recommended movie in the last 10 years has not been to my liking. This includes movies like Lord of the Rings, Inception, Ironman, The Hangover, Wall-E, Almost Famous, etc.
just curious.. what movies do you actually like? if you would, a top 10ish movies and maybe as to why you like them.
Most movies that I truly enjoy fall into 'popcorn' flicks because of how fun they are and how much I enjoy re-watching them. Others I like on the list are because they touched me on a emotional level. I wouldn't call this a top ten, but simply a list of movies that are among my favorites.

- Seven
- The Usual Suspects
- Aladdin
- Rocky 4
- Back to the Future
- Apollo 13
- JFK
- Gladiator
- Terminator 2
- Jurassic Park

To give you an idea of the few newer movies I've actually enjoyed:
- A Beautiful Mind
- Fracture
- Kung Fu Panda
- The Dark Knight

Ill be honest, yes. And everyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves because they really have hated something just because its popular. My evidence: Take how much hatred there is towards Halo and Call OF Duty. If they were not as popular, the hatred would be smaller.

i don't like avatar, don't care about call of duty. but only because i only think there are things bad with them that i personally don't like. however, i do admit one of the reasons i don't like avatar is because of how much people are conformists to it. this is all my opinion

Which means you dislike/hate it because it has popularity. Resentment is very close to hatred and dislike.

The only reason I have ever disliked something popular, is because the people who use it are not the kind of people I like, and thus playing the game would be an unpleasurable experience for me. So, I hate the player, not the game. (I didn't hate Avatar, I just thought it was a 'meh' movie. I don't see why it did so well. Call of Duty I am against on the principle of its players (mainly those who go to my school) who would not stop filling my earhole with talk about kill streaks, K/D ratios, prestiges ect. Its bad enough constantly getting told (Imagine if [my name] played, he'd be great at it). Harry Potter I have nothing against. Infact, I'm all for it (except the most recent one, too much focus on relationships between characters for my liking). It appeals to most demographics; it starts of as a children's movie, and builds up to a dark fantasy, more teen/adult oriented, series.)
interesting view point, i do like COD, but thing is i have friends to play with, and it's actually considered nerdy as hell to mention any video games at my high school, odd as it may sound so even a block buster like cod would only get me funny looks if i brought it up. i love harry potter, the books, were my first books actually read by myself, i started reading them in second grade, and i couldn't read that well on my own yet, but after that i was reading nonstop and i was even up to Stephen King level reading in 6th grade. 4 years and i made some major improvements. so i credit HP with that, it sparked my interest in books. but things i do hate because of both their popularity and quality would have be much pop music. Gaga, Ke$sha, bieber, cyrus, and so on just irks my ears, but benig popular usually has nothing to do with it, hell i love Nickleback, Disturbed, Green day, Seether, and Avenged sevenfold are all bands i've been told "suck cuz they're mainstream" but the happen to be my favorite bands.

I don't think so like for example the Crazy Frog. I hate everything about it and when it become popular to the point that it reach number 1 chart on Top of the Pop just only infuriate me futher. Yes I hated that it became popular but I also hated it in the first place.

Nope. I generally start hating stuff because of what popularity does with things though.

No, I generally don't hate things 'just because they are popular', but sometimes yes. In those cases it is because they're popular without deserving it. I do not discard it without trying it out first. The cases when I really hate something because of it's fame is in cases such as Twilight. I didn't care in the slightest until I tried watching it, after that, I hate it's guts. Especially because it's so damn popular. It wouldn't have been so bad if it had just vanished into obscurity, but that wasn't the case.

I have, but I was in junior high and high school at the time. I'm now a lot older and have gotten over that. However, I still know many people who hate things because they are popular.

I don't like things because they don't appeal to me, which seems a bit hard for some people to grasp. People who say, "u onleh h8 it coz it's popular!!11!!" are usually insane fans who can't find any flaws in it.
However, if there's something I don't like, and pretty much every person I know goes on and on about it like it's fantastic, I end up hating it more because the fans piss me off even more.
I can't stand Rhianna for example. She's a stupid, out of tune, annoying, whiny little *****, but they play her shit songs all day on the radio and pretty much everyone I know will literally worship her.
