Yup, Twilight i hated for.. well at least a year for precisely that reason, then i decided i would stop being a hypocrite cos im always saying you should form your own opinion on things, so i watched all 3 twilight movies.

After watching i can safely say i still dont like twilight.. but at least im not a hypocrite.
Aren't there four Twilight movies?
There's 4 books but only 3 movies so far, next is coming out next year (i think)
yay.
*Oh Joy she's not finished making them*, i've seen the first film and I think that's enough of it to hate Twilight without being a hypocrite...

At some points, I hear music or see a movie that I think is alright, but the fact that everyone seems to LOVE it makes me dislike it. I feel like it is not worthy of the praise it gets. Examples: LIl Wayne, World of Warcraft, and Avatar.

Not really.

I tend to be a bit cautious of popular things when trying them, I tend to hold the opinion the what the majority of people want in a game, movie, TV series or whatever isn't what I want in a game or whatever.

Popular things are perfectly capable of being good, it's just, most don't appeal to me. I'd much rather play an old school RPG than a fresh new shooter, it's just my tastes and interests.

I'm more annoyed by people who say that everyone who hates call of duty is a hipster than the hipsters who hate call of duty because it's popular.

Call of Duty isn't the greatest game ever made. There are good reasons to hate it, but there are also bad reasons to hate it.

The whole Final Fantasy series.

Not just because it's popular though. I just don't get the whole premise, and the fact that it's such a popular series makes me hate it even more.

Yes. All the way.
Justin Bieber has an UNGODLY huge fan base and the voice of a five year old girl.
What do these people see in him? He sings pop songs, so what? Lady Gaga does that while her bra lights on fire after coming out of a giant egg. Tell me that's not at least more interesting than Bieber.
Yes, I hate him just for his fanbase, so rabid and vile it makes me want to puke.

No. If we all hated everything that was popular we would've stopped using the internet once everybody got it and more importantly would've hated video games once the captain of the Football team bought an xbox. That's something you should probably mention the next time you're in the situation that this thread started off with.

Also people who actually do hate stuff just because it's popular probably liked it before it got popular and now feels robbed of it. This is something that needs to change. Recently I got into a discussion where someone thought I hated zombies now just because they're everywhere and I've been a horror fan since I could breathe so I liked it first. Dawn of the Dead hasn't gotten worse because a girl with a Louis Vuitton bag who watches Jersey Shore likes it now, but since it's become popular there is now a case of horrible oversaturation and the meaning of Zombies has been destroyed. But this will pass. Same thing happens with music, sports teams, movies and pretty much anything else.

What's important to remember is that for you it's what you love, for them it's a fad. Eventually they'll leave it all behind and you'll be there to clean up after them and pick up your drunken, puking, mess of an interest and take it home to nurse back to health and spend its life with you again.

No, I have not. I have hated (well, disliked is more accurate, I rarely hate) some things that also happened to be popular. But I dislike those things entirely on their own merit.

For instance, I think Modern Warfare 2 is a bad game because the only part of it I'm interested in (single player) is poorly paced, spastic and plays out like a fevered dream of a 10-year old with ADD. I also dislike Oblivion because of the nonexistant plot, zero noteworthy characters, backwards retarded game mechanics and a bland boring world that simply isn't worth exploring.

Very rarely do I dislike something based on word of mouth and second-hand evidence, but this is usually due to a unanimous vote by pretty much everyone else. For instance, I've never touched Kane&Lynch:Dog Days, but I'm fairly certain it's a steaming pile of poop. Granted, that game isn't very popular, but the principle stands. I don't need to watch Jersey Shore to know I'd hate it.

In most cases though, I tend to see for myself. I rented Twilight and sat through it to make sure it's bad. It was. I borrowed my friend's copy of Crysis to confirm that it's a boring FPS with overproduced graphics done by an engine wasted on rendering grass.

But I hate it when people accuse me of disliking things because they're popular - I like or dislike stuff and don't care if it's popular.

EDIT: However, there is a simple reason why popular things get hated. They get more spotlight, more people get to hear about them and get to form opinions based on whatever info they find.

Who here saw Yahtzee Portal 2 critique? Portal 1 was something he liked, which then became sullied by the others who shared his opinion. It's completely reasonable, and anyone who hasn't felt this way or similar, intentionally or not, is certainly not someone who posts on the escapist.

Since you're reading this on an internet forum, it's probably safe to assume you've all encountered this particular phrase or some variation thereof.

It inevitably emerges when someone who enjoys a popular and/or successful product encounters someone who does not. Common examples include Avatar, Call of Duty and Harry Potter. The accusation is generally accompanied by the suggestion that the 'hater' is motivated by the desire to be an independently minded person who does not simply follow the crowd.

...

Really? I mean... really?

Does anyone actually do this? Because I find it a bit hard to swallow.

Seriously, I'm curious. Have you - yes, you - ever decided to hate something purely because other people like it?
Well let's see... I hated Avatar because people seemed to claim it was "DA BEST MOVIE EVAR" despite the fact that it was essentially Pocahontas in space with blue space natives. Many of those people simply gush on about how it looked so good, leading me to believe that they only liked it because it was pretty. Aside from how good it looked, nothing special there.

I don't hate CoD, I just never saw what was so good about it. This goes back to the claims that some people make that it's the best thing since mans discovery of fire, but those people are usually the ones who never played anything before CoD.

I actually liked Harry Potter up till the 5th book, couldn't finish it. It just got hopelessly dreary to me and whatever kept me reading through the first 4 disappeared.

I know you didn't mention it, but someone mentioned Twilight. I dislike Twilight because the woman who do like it seem to believe that it's somehow romantic, when it comes off to me as being creepy and stalkerish. I don't claim to know much about it, but what little I do know just seems incredibly creepy, that and the characters come off bland and dumb.

A lot of my dislikes generally have to do with the opposing group being unable explain why they like something without coming off as being a fanatic. I very rarely get a rational discussion with these kinds of people.

No, never. I might hate something MORE if it is possible, but never because it is popular. For instance, i don't hate Justin Bieber. I find him mediocre, but I don't hate him or his music even though it is way more popular than it deserves.

I'll be honest, as much as i hate twilight and its fans, the first movie wasnt actually all that bad, certainly not the worst thing ever.
However the 2 other films were just plain terrible in every possible way, terrible dialogue, terrible plot, terrible acting, terrible CGI, terribly anti climactic action sequences.. infact the word terrible doesnt even begin to describe it.

So yes, i think you can hate on twilight without seeing the other two films

Eh... Kinda.

I have caught myself involuntarily hating something for no reason other than its popularity. Things like Gears of War or Call of Duty. I never tried these games, so why was I hating on them. Thankfully, once I do catch myself, I just stop thinking about it and alter my opinion to... well, actually, I'll have no opinion on them, since I've never tried them.

So, I guess I do sort of hate things because they're popular, but I manage to catch myself and stop the unnecessary hating.

I have, however, fallen in love with something because of its unpopularity. But I'm going to assume that's for a different thread.

I think I've done this a few times. I'm not sure if it really counts as hating it because it's popular, or just "hating" it because it didn't live up to the hype (and by hating, I mean just disliking it and taking greater offense to the flaws). Take Halo CE: everyone and their mom loved that game, so when I got a 360, of course I had a lot of friends telling me I had to get it. So I did, and I found a rather boring game with some level design ranging from okay but nothing special to absolutely awful (Library is one of the worst levels I've ever played across all games I've played). It did not live up to the hype at all, and then when I was told I should get Halo 2 next, well let's just say that it did not happen.

I don't hate something for being popular, I do hate some stuff that is good, but not good enough to warrant the popularity it gets.

Not really, I like some popular things and dislike some. I try not to bash movies and such if I haven't seen them, but often word of mouth gives you an opinion that you haven't formed yourself. So.. maybe. :)

...uh...

I admit going to the top 40...but

Though the Spock version is much better

LMFAO, Swedish House Mafia, Lady Gaga (for once), Tracy Chapman (Fast Car)

But if you get rid of "I am great" and "Dancing is cool" songs as well, then you're left with very little.
