Yes, because then it can become monotonous. Take for example Owl City, I heard his music when he was big in america but not as well known here in the UK. I enjoyed it and thought it was some great music and like many got the album, although it wasn't continuously on my playlist. Then it started playing religiously on the music channels, then the radio, then on adverts, then in music shops etc.

Sometimes when things become popular it ruins the enjoyment by being repetative.

I hate Facebook and Twitter not because they are popular but because I just don't see the point. Just call them or text them.

Nope.
I hated Avatar because it was generic and the 3D was useless, and I hated Call of Duty because it was way too popular for something that was really mediocre.
And I wouldn't really call it hate, that's a bit of a strong word.

Not that I can remember.

I will say that as a Halo fan, I at least feel that others hate on the series and us fans siply for that reason, if not in actuallaity.

I dislike some popular things because I have to constantly hear about them when I have no interest in them what so ever. E.g. Justin Bieber and Call of Duty.
however that isn't hate
I HATE twilight because a 'friend' told me it continuously it was 'amazing' and so I read it. I hate that because it is an affront to literature.

The consensus of a group will never change my initial view of how I enjoy or don't enjoy content.

I give everything a chance.

If I find that I dislike something, then it is done and I move on. If what I'm viewing or consuming is in good taste and is favorable as enjoyable content, then I'm all over it.

Although it can be argued that a community can augment the experience, the solution to avoiding possible detrimental changes? Avoid them and enjoy stuff independently.

If the community has a positive outlook on a movie or game, I may as well join with like-minded people and share my sentiments. Relatively harmless really, if you conduct yourself respectively to other's outlooks on the same content.

Note I haven't used the word 'hate' once in this article, aside from this exception. I find there is no reason to hold grudges to the opinions of others or the content thereof.

Stay fancy!

I voted yes, but typically when I hate something because it's popular that's when I have no other basis for an opinion on it, and all I can do to judge it by are annoying fans. The best example of this would be Twilight, never watched it, or read the books yet I hate the series almost entirely because of it's fans.

I also run into situations where my dislike for something is amplified by it's popularity, Avatar and Nartuo being among those. Specifically, Avatar wasn't a bad movie, I just feel it didn't come close to deserving the population it garnered, and that's why I dislike it.

I hate Justin Beiber's music. It makes me even angrier that there are so many people who love it. Mature? Not really, but it's just how I feel.

Nope. However, it would be a lie to say that things that tend to be popular have within them various loathsome qualities.

I love Lady GaGa, but there's a lot of popular music I hate, because what makes it popular(The heavy rhythms complimented by tinny synth quasi-melodies), is horrible.

As an initial knee jerk reaction definately, but I always take the time to actaully try what Im bashing, and 9/10 times it is just as bad as I made it out to be.
That could just be the fact that you already expect it to be crap so therefore you will perceive it that way. We all do it. If we're determined enough, then we can hate anything.

Personally, when it comes to hating popular stuff, the hate is actually justified. Justin Bieber. No need to say more. But I will. I played CoD to death, and then I realised that I had wasted my time playing a mediocre shooter that got loads of attention cause it got lucky, and drew in a large audience.

Another person who's popular yet I despise. Lady Gaga and all her autotuned OTT fashion nonsense. She's not a visionary, she's insane. All her songs sound damn identical, and hurt my ears.

Also, every rapper deserves to have their vocal chords removed. Just saying.

It bugs me when people try to use that argument. As if you can't not like something just because it's popular without trying to be cool.

OT: I don't think I dislike anything because it's popular. I don't like Halo b/c the story wasn't interesting and the characters weren't likable. I don't like CoD anymore b/c the story went off the rails in MW2. I don't like Bieber or Lady Gaga b/c I don't like that kind of music.

Since you're reading this on an internet forum, it's probably safe to assume you've all encountered this particular phrase or some variation thereof.

It inevitably emerges when someone who enjoys a popular and/or successful product encounters someone who does not. Common examples include Avatar, Call of Duty and Harry Potter. The accusation is generally accompanied by the suggestion that the 'hater' is motivated by the desire to be an independently minded person who does not simply follow the crowd.

...

Really? I mean... really?

Does anyone actually do this? Because I find it a bit hard to swallow.

Seriously, I'm curious. Have you - yes, you - ever decided to hate something purely because other people like it?
Why are we talking as if it's even possible to decide to hate something?

Here. Let's try a little exercise. Now, when I say 'go,' I want you to start hating Scarlett Johansen, Martin Luther King and Christopher Nolan with all you've got.

Ready? Go!

Did it work?

Now, let's try it again, but this time I want you to totally fall in love with Halo, My Little Pony and Anime :p
(1)This makes no sense, and (2)I already am in love with MLP, (3)so you fail at life, the universe, and everything.
(1) I'm glad we agree! Seriously, read the very first line of my response that you've quoted.

(2) Sonuvahbitch, I knew you were going to say that.

(3) How will I withstand the onslaught of the holy trifecta of failure? You don't just sound like a jerk when you say something like that. You sound like both a nerd and a jerk.

...and back to (2) - sorry. Just had to mention that hearing things like "I'm in love with MLP" reminds me Patrick Swayze from Donnie Darko for some reason.
I like to throw in nerdy references in my insults so the insulted party feels like they lack self esteem for feeling insulted by something without any real teeth to it. It's a win-win for me =D
I like to understand the words I use before I use them, words like win-win. Yup, you definitely remind me of Patrick Swayze in Donnie Darko.

In the spirit of equality, I like to give things a fair chance before dismissing them. That being said, there is a ton of popular media out there that I personally don't enjoy.

In the case of movies...I've all but given up on them. Nearly every highly recommended movie in the last 10 years has not been to my liking. This includes movies like Lord of the Rings, Inception, Ironman, The Hangover, Wall-E, Almost Famous, etc.
just curious.. what movies do you actually like? if you would, a top 10ish movies and maybe as to why you like them.
Most movies that I truly enjoy fall into 'popcorn' flicks because of how fun they are and how much I enjoy re-watching them. Others I like on the list are because they touched me on a emotional level. I wouldn't call this a top ten, but simply a list of movies that are among my favorites.

- Seven
- The Usual Suspects
- Aladdin
- Rocky 4
- Back to the Future
- Apollo 13
- JFK
- Gladiator
- Terminator 2
- Jurassic Park

To give you an idea of the few newer movies I've actually enjoyed:
- A Beautiful Mind
- Fracture
- Kung Fu Panda
- The Dark Knight
wow i actually do like near all those movies (fracture and a beautiful mind i haven't seen, and the usual suspects, but otherwise seen em all and love em!)

I'm just surprised that you like "popcorn" flicks and that your not one of those high and mighty "I only watch artful movies with depth to the EXTREMEE BECAUSE I'm BETTER THAN ALL OF YOU"

still, nice choices, especially kung fu panda and aladdin

I have seen it happening in other people, for instance someone who avoided the Harry Potter series very strongly, simply because of the sheer amount of hype about it leaving them feeling burnt out. I pretty much tricked them into watching the first movie with me, then leant her the book and she has since fully gotten into the series. Simply put, its a good series and is the kind of thing she likes, but purely because everyone had seen it and was so strongly banging on about it, it actually caused her to not want to check it out.

As a similar note, I force myself to ignore as much footage or news about a given book or game that I am interested in, if I know it will be very popular. Currently still doing that with Portal 2, since my birthday is in June. Besides the fact that it is very easy to spoil myself on the game, if I overexpose myself the game itself will become almost a formality and nowhere near as fun as it should be.

As another 'sort of similar' note...Twilight is poorly written. But would it have gotten even a fraction of the negative attention, scathing reviews and people tearing it a new one, if it weren't so popular?

I've occasionally hated things that were popular and been peeved that, despite sucking ass, some things got popular, but a thing's popularity has never affected whether or not I liked it.

No. I like things because I find something to enjoy about them, and I dislike things because I don't find much to enjoy.

For example, I don't like Ratatat, who are popular in their respective circles, but I don't like them because I find their music boring as shit. I dislike Ratatouille because it's a mess which changes mood halfway through after getting a new director. I hate the hype surrounding Odd Future, but find Tyler's music to be merely mediocre.
