Y'know, I've spent a large part of my childhood playing jrpgs and it wasn't until this year...when I started playing Fallout3. When I played that game, I began to see the great possibilities provided by wrpgs, but I now wonder what western dev's can do attract a Fandom that is as massive as that which belongs to their eastern counterparts. So, now I am thinking of things in JRPGs that wrpgs can use.

for example: more Original settings.

I've done some some research and found that lot of wrpgs like Oblivion fall into that LOTR type setting which can still be fun and creative but not mindblowing enough.

Mass Effect does space pretty well, but that is still not exciting enough.

Fallout has a damn good setting, which immerses the player into an atomic wasteland full of ruin and mutation.

If there is a Jrpg world I love to travel with wrpg freedom, it would be Final Fantasy 7. I know alot of people actually don't like ff7, but the cyber-punk/post modern/high fantasy blend is just so so fantastic to me, I can't help but want to take a stroll through it all.

what about you?

Hell, they need to trade ideas sometime. I hate having them considered exclusive genres when they're both just so darned fantastic.

One of the best games I ever played, for as old as it is. It surprises me that games now and days still are not as in depth like this game was. XD

Ehhh...i dont really like the whole WRPG genre, because they normally come down to one super strong dude vs THE WORLD.
Change "one super strong dude" with "group of super strong dudes/dudetes" Then you got your JRPG.

I fail to see any valid point in this sentence.

I tend to prefer JRPG stories; while WRPG's are superior with freedom and, to varying extents, making your own tale, overall I'd prefer a plot written by a professional.

Also, some JRPG battle systems; I don't mean the stereotypical FF or Pokemon style, but I'd love some grid-based tactical combat, along with in-world Chrono Trigger-style encounters.

Oh, and I agree with the OP on settings; I like Tolkien reasonably enough, but I'm more interested in some JRPG settings (airships are part of the reason).

There is a valid point if you would read my whole statement. My "valid point" wasin the second part of the sentence where i said that J.R.P.Gs are just alot more varied then W.R.P.Gs and so they should make W.R.P.Gs more varied...
Yeah, I said sentence, not the whole post.
I just thought it a bit of a silly thing to say.

But yes, I do agree with the rest of your statement.
Only problem being the state the games industry is in now where everything have to be as commercial as possible.
No one dares doing anything different for fear that the mainstream audience will dismiss it for being "weird".

I do rather hope the whole thing recedes a bit, and if it does, variety ahoy.

Unfortunately, I was not into PC games at the release, and the fact that I was only 9, I missed it.

I think JRPGs are able to nail emotional storylines and strategic gameplay, whereas (recent) WRPGs generally favor action-packed storylines and reflex gaming.

If you could make a story with action AND emotion, as well as a battle system with strategy AND fast-paced action (though Mass Effect got that right in my opinion), sign me up.

Just because FF likes to say to hell with it and make acid inspired worlds, does not make it better. Play Morrowind though. That game is like a medival RPG on an alien planet.

Also...no. Why do they need to attrack JRPG gamers? TES, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, these games are doing great.

I say it should be the other way around.

JRPG's should grab some ideas from WRPGs instead, like choices in quests, custom characters, well-varied world without too much linearity, something that helps JRPG's better fit the definition of 'role-playing'.

Only problem being there isn't a definition of roleplaying, as everyone's is different, as shown by the countless threads debating it on this forum. I mean personally I don't believe the things you said are a definition of roleplaying.

Personally I think they should keep to themselves. I like both genre's equally for what they do best at. JRPG's have a more indepth story and usually a complex battle system. Where as WRPGs give me choice beyond belief, allowing me to to shape my character. I can't help but think that if they each tried borrowing ideas from each other, we'd get too many jack of all trades, master of none. I also think they should just focus on their target audience. I mean most recently FFXIII, I liked it, but thousands didn't. I somewhat put that down to the fact that Square Enix are trying to attract both the western and eastern audiences with their games, and they don't have a defined audience. I mean they took the linearity idea from shooters apparently. They seemed to forget their audience wanted an RPG, not a shooter.

JRPGs have more original settings? Seems to me like fully half of them have generic worlds that are an anachronistic melange of fantasy and sci-fi. Between eg. Planescape, VTMB, Mass Effect, Fallout, Morrowind, Arcanum etc there are tons of distinct original settings. I'd say they've got as much if not more originality in setting than JRPGs.
