Hey all, I have been thinking of picking up the Orange Box even though I have played half life and was not all that super psyched about it. The thing is that I bought Gears 2 and traded Halo away hoping that Gears would become my go to multiplayer game. Unfortunately I am not as happy with Gears multiplayer as I hoped I would be. Everyone knows about the time it takes to find a game. The weapons are not balanced in the least, so the winner is purely decided by who gets too the big gun first.

I hear TF 2 is a great game and most everyone agrees portal is outstanding.

So the question is twofold. First I would appreciate it if someone could describe the multiplayer experience of TF2 so I don't make a snap judgment? Are there people still playing it? Is there alot of camping/ cheating due to poor game design? Does it have the lasting entertainment value like Halo's multiplayer? Is Valve continuing to produce anything for it?

Second, If there is another game with online multiplayer that I should be checking out? Let me know what that is.

TF2 is a very well designed game, and it's very fun to play. It's incredibly balanced (at least on 360, without updates), and camping/cheating is not at all common in my play experience. There's only six maps on Xbox, but they're all fun. Valve is continuously updating the PC version to include more maps, new weapons, balance tweaks, graphical upgrades, and the like.

Half Life 2 and the Episodes are my favorite parts of the Orange Box, but TF2 and Portal alone are worth $20.

It's not online multiplayer, but the best reason to buy the Orange Box is Portal.

I would say don't get it. I found portal mediocre at best. If your just starting to play TF2 now, you probably won't get a kill for another month (I got TF2 a week ago and I still haven't killed anyone). But Half Life is good.

I find TF2 to be a pretty slow shooter in the sense that you have a lot of time to think tactically. You might have to break yourself out of Halo 3 "IT'S COMIN RIGHT FOR US!" tactics to get proficient at it. Take your time and try playing the slower classes before you get into the brawlers.

Out of interest, does the 360 orange box include Half Life 2:Deathmatch and Counter Strike Source?

Buy it, Portal and TF2 are more than enough to justify $20, you might want to play through Half Life again too, you never know.

Seriously? I got 4 kills my first game, dude...

Anyways, I'd say you should definitely get it. Portal is amazing, but short, TF2 is great and well balanced, and the inclusion of Half Life 2 and the Episodes is a great one. Definitely worth your money.

EDIT: But, if you just want multiplayer, just by TF2. Buy Portal seperately though, if you want a unique gaming experience.

No, the multiplayer stuff is only TF2. TF2 is still an amazing game.

Out of interest, do you get the gravity gun in HL2: Deathmatch?

Yeah, to be fair I do sucks as at any online shooter except for Wolfenstein.

That is hilarious. Bravo, I have never read a better description of the halo multiplayer experience. Yet it still remain one the most entertaining multiplayer games i have played to date.

Yes, everyone gets a gravity gun.
Should you make a kill with something thrown by it a toilet hitting a head appears in the weapon used icon. It never gets old.

My god... that is awesome. I'd buy a decent computer, just for that. I really should get Steam.

Personally, I dislike TF2. It's a matter of taste, I suppose, but if you want a multiplayer game, get CoD4 or Halo 3. Since you traded Halo 3 for GOW2, I assume that you didn't exactly love it. You could pay the 20 for Portal alone, and I think that it might be worth it, but it's entirely down to what you want; a multiplayer or singleplayer experience. I'd recommend CoD4 if you're looking for multiplayer. The Orange Box is only worth it if you want to play Half-Life 2.

Portal is awesome game. One of the best, although shortest too, logic games ever.

TF 2 is the most fun I've had with a multiplayer FPS since Enemy Territory.

Those two alone make it worth. HL2 and Episodes have good plot, decent gameplay and fast paced action. Alyx is one of the best companions there can be. Also, supercharged Gravity Gun ftw.

get CoD4 or Halo 3
Ah, those casual FPS games.

Well they are planning on releasing new content on the 360 soon in the from of DLC. It's for a unknown price at the moment so I'd have to assume that alot of people either still play on that version or will to get ready for the expansion which has new area(s) some new weapons and a sandwich... .

What? I got the Hardcore achievement (5000 kills) in 2 weeks. (I played way too much, and I was off school and it's all I played)

Well actually, I think the rate of finding a game when you are "single playing" the multilayer, has improved a lot. It only takes me about 5-6 seconds to find a team and battle.

On the otherhand, it takes a while when you have inquired your own team, theeen it will take you a while.

Hardcore is 1000. And it can be done after 20-30 hours, so if you play 2+ hours a day for 2 weeks, it's not that hard.

Even easier if you play as a medic and you have skilled teammates.
