I don't mean to derail Rock Beefchest in his own thread, but better to post here then make a similar thread.

I have not played any Valve games except Portal which I got from XBLA and enjoyed, but I am interested in trying out the Half-Life series. I have heard that the original is getting a remake mod for HF2. At the same time, this thread keeps saying that TF2 is better on the PC. www.systemrequirementslab.com says I meet the minimum, but not recommended requirements for The Orange Box due to video card and CPU speed.

My question, should I get the Half-Life 1 Anthology from Steam and The Orange Box on my 360, get both Anthology and TOB from Steam, or just get TOB and wait for the mod? I can get TOB cheaper for the 360 then from Steam, but I wonder if the extra $10 is worth it.

Try the Half Life 2/Portal Demo on Steam, it's free and if you can run it you can run TF2.

If you can run TF2 on PC get it on PC. Just about everything from the controls to the server options, voice options, communications and bugfixes are better than the 360 version.
They're all fairly small things but they add up to make the game a much better experience, all the extra content, official and home made is a happy extra.

Unless something has changed the PC version also supports more players on a server.

I would say don't get it. I found portal mediocre at best. If your just starting to play TF2 now, you probably won't get a kill for another month (I got TF2 a week ago and I still haven't killed anyone). But Half Life is good.
What? I got the Hardcore achievement (5000 kills) in 2 weeks. (I played way too much, and I was off school and it's all I played)
Hardcore is 1000. And it can be done after 20-30 hours, so if you play 2+ hours a day for 2 weeks, it's not that hard.

Even easier if you play as a medic and you have skilled teammates.
Bleh, I forgot it was 1000, but my point got across.

Quick question on getting this stuff from steam: (sorry to interject on the thread) but can you burn to disc, the games you've downloaded from Steam?

On topic, My buddy got the Orange Box, he said the first thing I better buy when I get a Windows computer is the orange box.

Why isn't there an option for both Portal and TF2? They are both awesome games, but for very different reasons.

TF2 is certainly worth the price of admission. However, get the PC version if you can. The PC version isn't very graphically intensive and can be run on a variety of PCs. Likewise, the 360 doesn't have access to the custom content and Valve updates as of right now. The PC community is also much more active and mature.

Portal is, hands down, the BEST GAME IN THE WORLD. If Portal were a dictator we would all be fucked...Buy TOB...

Guess I will be getting the PC version. Hope it supports 360 controllers. I'm not much of a keyboard/mouse person with shooter games. So I just need to download these two packs and I will pretty much have all the games?

You can back up any Steam game if you so wish. But really, why would you want to? You can just download it again any time, and the download speed is really fast (I average about 700k/second.) Not needing discs is half the point of Steam, IMO.

In addition to all the fantastic things everyone has said, the reason TF2 is my favorite online multiplayer FPS is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. I won't deny the goodness of CoD4, and even though I hate Halo it's got a huge following so it must be worthwhile somehow, but I cannot stress enough how much the game is willing to goof off. I can only take so much serious shooting before I need some humor. There's nothing like hearing a scout shout out "Hey man, I got your secret crap!" while hightailing it into the distance, or seeing a heavy march around the corner into the base bellowing "I AM INVEENCEEBLE!" as his medi-pal Ubers him and everything is destroyed.

Just fantastic, I say if you're looking for a well polished game with a bit of hokeyness added on for the hell of it, this is the perfect game.

So
