Well it's not a motorized vehicle... But it is a mechanical device used to steer oneself through space so I guess it could be called a vehicle.

Says the less experienced forum Nazi. And it's off topic. Who cares? The 100+ escapists who voted in this thread, you ******* stupid ****.

Sorry, if that's a bit overkill, I had a bad day.

I say yes because it will move you somewhere. It's not a quetion of how efficient is it, but if it fits the bill.

I wouldn't say so, because whether you use it or not you're still travelling, just the parachute makes it safe.

I think a parachute is to a plane what an airbag is to a car in the sense that it slows you down but it does also convey people and things from the air to the ground so i suppose it could count as a vehicle in the same way that a skateboard does. After all they both sorta determine the location, skateboards to the skate park/around and about, parachute to the ground/sea.

By this logic, an air-bag is a vehicle, as it stops you travelling very fast and dying horribly (most of the time)

Not a vehicle, but rather a piece of travelling equipment, like a walking stick or crampons

No.

Thats like saying that a skateboard is a vehicle.
According to Websters (I think it was that dictionary), a skateboard is given as an example of a vehicle.

After much thought about this at work, I think I have come to determine what, to me, defines a vehicle.

Any device which provides an extended amount of inertial force and support to transport a person or object.

For example:

Shoes would not be a vehicle, because as the wearer, you must continually provide force in order to move (walking).

A skateboard IS a vehicle, because while you must provide the starting force, it will carry it on without continual work from the user.

Thus, for me, a parachute is a vehicle as it provides lateral inertial support during a decent, plus can be controlled to provide rotational support.

Keep discussing. This is a question without a clear answer, and seeing each persons views is very entertaining and enlightening.

No. It's a safety feature. You don't need a parachute to jump but it helps avoid death, like a seat belt in a car or helmet whilst cycling

Plus you can't just walk outside and start parachuting like you would drive or cycle. (I suppose if you lived on a cliff you could but I wouldn't reccomend it)

A few seconds on dictionary.com yields:
Vehicle: ?noun
1. any means in or by which someone travels or something is carried or conveyed; a means of conveyance or transport: a motor vehicle; space vehicles.

Yes, a parachute is a vehicle

People on here are acting like if it doesn't have an engine it's no longer a vehicle.

/thread?

Is a parachute technically a vehicle? Yes. Would anyone in their right mind really call you on it? No.

It probably is a vehicle in technicality, but I doubt it would be considered one by most.

Acording to Google yes it is.

Google Definition:a conveyance that transports people or objects.

And yes it does transport you.

And before you say it only glides, well so do gliders and yet they're regarded as vehicles.

Is a blanket a vehicle? No. Is a blanket tied to a backpack a vehicle? No.

I don't really think so. It isn't a means of transport any more than jumping off a building is. You're just jumping out of a plane with a blanket tied to your back. It's not transportation, it's simply making the transportation slower and safer...

It's not transporting you. It's a safety precaution.

A bike can't even stand up unassisted, that means nothing.

Neither can hang gliders.
