Oh and I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I think this generation is better than any of the other ones. It's just that everyone only remembers the good games from past generations.
I completely agree with you. PS2/Xbox/Gamecube had it's fair share of crap. Nintendo 64/PS1 (not including Dreamcast cos I never got to play one) had their fair share of crap. I'm only 15 so I wasn't around for consoles and gaming before that.

I meant it should'nt happen
Give me one reason why it shouldn't. So long as the sequel is good, it doesn't matter when it is released.
If you can't find one of many reasons it should'nt your odviously out of touch.

I can think of tons of reasons if the sequel is bad. But if the sequel is good then what's the problem? I still haven't gotten an answer for that from you.

I am very disappointed.
Lets look at GTA4 vs GTASA. San Andreas is a MUCH better game than its sequel. GTA4's attempts to be realistic means it loses all the variety and color from before and it suffers greatly. Besides GTA4 stealing ideas more more than Carlos Mencia steals jokes, it also is much less fun. Driving is terrible and the cheats you could use are also terrible. GTASA had a lot of fun codes to use and a lot of weapon and vehicle choice. The vehicle selection also changes as you go from area to area. GTA4 always has a butt-load of taxis and less than half of the weapons.

GTA isn't the only series to go to hell. Doom 3 can't compare to the greatness of Doom 1&2. The new monster designs aren't near as memorable and its gameplay switched from monster-spam mindless fun to attempted-horror.

Plus there are hardly any new and unique titles. Everything is just the same as before with a larger number. Games in the old days could a chef fending off murderous hot dogs as he attempts to make giant hamburgers. Games nowadays seem to be afraid of being unique.

No way, this generation is one of the best. Especially if you are playing new IPs and not pre existing ones. We've got: Mass Effect, and LittleBigPlanet... etc

It's one of the best generations yet. [raises flame shield]

Perhaps you ought to think about rewording your statement, because apparently I missed your meaning as well.

Just take a look at the last month's worth of releases. Dragon Age, L4D2, Assassin's Creed 2, MW2. All of us might not have liked them all but i bet most of us liked at least one of those titles. The gaming industry has always put out the same shit to awesome ratio it does now.

At no point in your first post did you discuss sequels coming out a year after the first game. But maybe I'm just to stupid to understand what you are talking about. That's a common problem that I have. So I think it would help both us to understand each other if you answered my question rather than giving vague answers that I am incapable of comprehending.

is meant for Internet Kraken
Also you could have just quoted me rather than making a double post.

Also the question was:

If the sequel is good, why does it matter if it comes out a year after the original game?

Like the movie, literature, and music industries, they've forgotten how to not mass-produce the same shit over and over again. Yeah, that sums it up.
That's a great summary. The games industry is going the way movies recently have. They've all made the economically conservative call of mass-producing the same safe, bland garbage the majority of consumers will approve in order to create a steady cash flow. Few companies are taking chances with creative and innovative games we haven't seen before in exchange for a secure profit. Is this wrong? No, but it's certainly a sad thing to watch.

For those of you playing the home game, he's referring to "Burger Time"

The current state of the industry makes me weep. While there are some brilliant GAMES being made, there are so many things going wrong with the industry as a whole that I dread the future. IW giving the giant finger to PC gamers and using the low standards of console gamers to get away with doing a shoddy job on MW2; Bobby Kotick still not tarred and feathered for being a gigantic douche; Australia STILL not having an R18+ rating for games thanks to the machinations of Michael Motherfucking Atkinson while still being obscenely price gouged at every turn; games being released as betas to be patched into completion later; games being released with content removed so publishers can force you to pay extra for "bonus content" that you should have got with the initial fucking purchase; good games going underappreciated while overhyped mediocrities rake in cash like a Michael Bay movie- it's just getting to be all too much.

I'm just going to keep my head down, stick my fingers in my ears and play whichever good games I can get without thinking about things too much.

Sorry about my friend, he has a bad habbit of not being able to put his words down properly. But what hes trying too say is that game developers sometimes just slap a popular name onto a game, while half assing it and people just eat it up. Like if someone got you too eat shit by saying it was fudge, and you love the stuff so much that you ignore the fact its shit. But after your fourth handfull the taste has gotten too you and you fell disatisfied, thats the same feeling you get when you've played a crap game for about 45 min, only too relize you've been had. And since were on the subject, I DID NOT CARE FOR DRAGON AGE ORIGINS XD.

How is this problem unique to this console generation? If anything one could argue that this was far more prevalent in the earlier generations, when there were far fewer sources of video game reviews.

So... licensed games are bad? We knew that, and there were licensed games aplenty back in the day, too.

\It was apon playing Soul Calibur 4 and Tekken 6 that I realized that there preivous installments where significantly better and more user friendly.
Well here's one problem. The more hardcore games in the fighting genre have become very focused on combos, to the point where the cast majority of the attacks require an immense amount of precision and experience to pull off. User friendliness is not a concern of this genre: these games are made specifically to cater to the hardcore fans of the genre and the series.

But getting past that, you seem to be mostly referring to sequels. There are some amazing original IPs being released (a lot of crap ones too, but you have to expect that in an artistic field like this one). Sequels are harder to make well in many ways, especially the more long-running they are. This is because they have to take the concepts and mechanics that made the game great before and emulate them into a much more modern rendition. Some series' do this well, like most of Nintendo's series', but others can't quite make the comeback.

So I see the validity in what you're saying, but I don't think it's an indication of game quality as a whole.
