Of course! One important caveat though, unless the game is about 40 hours long (not that ridiculous, considering that by scaling the graphics back so much, they would have a lot more space to work with on the disk), then they better not charge full price for it. I'm not paying $60 for SNES level graphics on a modern system if it keeps with modern trends for game length.

Of course I will!

Some of my favourite games are in 2D such as:
Exit/Exit 2
Loco Roco 2
BlazBlue Continuum Shift
Final Fantasy IV (The PSP version)

I am proud to not be a graphics snob. If the gameplay is solid, then I couldn't care less about visuals. A game is designed to be played, first and foremost. If the game is designed to be gawked at,then it's an interactive film.

I can't see how someone could possibly say "no" in this poll.

Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim, Terraria and many many more are some games I play regularly.

I still play the sonic mega drive games, and i'm playing Pokemon diamond during lunch breaks at college. so yes i'd still buy a 2d game.

After some hesitation, probably, yes. Now, 2.5D games I would buy a lot easier.

erm... I buy and play 2D games ALL THE TIME! VVVVVV, Super Meat boy, Limbo, Braid, Cthulhu Saves the world, the list goes on. I'm also super excited for Rayman origins, and considering a pre-order, I don't quite understand the point of this thread, 2D is bigger than ever.

yes, of course... as long as the game is fun to play. if it also has a great art style, thats a huge bonus.

in the past couple of years ive bought Limbo, Outland, Fancy Pants Adventures, and a number of 2.5D games. i think the genre is destined to be mostly-downloadable. i cant see myself buying a 60$ 2D game, unless it is completely amazing.

Dimensions != graphics. If you were talking about low-graphics games, then I would have answered yes, but have you seen Minecraft? Extremely low-graphics game, but 3d. (Incidentally, also fun.) How about Psychonauts? That has horrible graphics by today's standards (and not intentionally like Minecraft, either), but it's 3d. Compare some of the high-quality graphics you see on some XBLA, Virtual Console and smartphone games that are 2d.

You're asking the wrong question. What you want to ask is either

1) "Would you buy a game with low-quality graphics in this time when we have so much graphics capability?" in which case my answer would be yes because many games do not require graphical fidelity to suck you in and entertain you. See my earlier examples, as I love Minecraft, Psychonauts, and several other games that have what would currently be considered poor graphics.

2) "Would you buy a game with 2d rendering in this time of popular and easy 3d rendering?" in which case my answer is also yes, both because games can be entertaining and engaging in 2d and because some games are actually better served by being 2d. Think about how much Sonic started to suck once he went 3d, for instance; later flops were caused by Team Sonic sucking, but even the initial move to 3d made a game whose primary mechanic was moving really fast through an obstacle course landscape impractical and unfun. Think how much more fun fighting games are in 2d, which is why, after a brief period of taking place in circular arenas, they went back to taking place in lanes in more recent years. (Some, like Mortal Kombat, still use 3d rendering, but they only do so as part of their aesthetic, rather than because the gameplay itself benefits from or requires 3d.)

In short, there's plenty of reason to still get 2d games, but even if there weren't, that has nothing to do with graphical quality as you implied.

Yes. Two-dimensional graphics are in no way bad graphics.

Nope. Same reason why I wouldn't go to a theatre and pay a ticket to see a black and white silent movie. Or read a book carved on blocks of stone.
Fail analogy is fail.

The lack of a Z-axis doesn't take anything away for a game experience designed on a two-dimensional plane.

Meanwhile, a black and white movie would in most cases deprive the viewer of potentially important visual cues, and silent movies would make implementing dialogue a clumsier process.

The "books carved of stone" thing doesn't even deserve an explanation for why it's a nonsensical thing to say.
I think that you're a dick, that analogy is great. I mean I disagree with him I buy and play 2d games all the time but I wouldn't pay sixty dollars for one, however I understand what he means and where he's coming from. I'm even inclined to agree with him, no need to insult his intelligence, it's a functioning analogy meaning that it is NOT actually fail. You jag.

No. But not because of the graphics are sub-par. I just don't enjoy 2D gameplay very much, whether it'd be over-the-top or sidescroller. While I don't expect indie developers to have amazing graphics, I do think they should pull their heads out of the Nostalgia cookie jar.

No, but mostly because I dont care for top down gameplay views (unless we're talking LoZ, than I make an exception.)

If its a 2D platformer however, I would seriously consider it.

2D graphics don't need to be automatically ugly. Look at old point&click adventure games or fighting games, or modern cell phone games and indies.

And if the gameplay and story are solid, the graphics don't even matter that much.

Absolutely?

The main reasons I play games are for their story and gameplay, not their technical prowess.

If it has an amazing story, I can forgive the graphics a little. I do enjoy a go graphic game but with out a story, it is just a very pretty, nut empty Christmas box.

We just got the Scott Pilgrim game of Xbox Live... Haven't regretted it one bit. Amazing Game.

And I myself bought the Oddworld set on Steam and the Remastering of Monkey Island... So yeah I'd buy 2D games.
