Yes. As a matter of fact, one my favorite video game series is Castlevania, which to this day is majority 2D with the 3D games mostly considered not that good.

I'll answer this question with another question. Why not? It's a game, I like games, I play games.

On another note, Braid and it's depressed brother Limbo are both living proof that 2D doesn't equal bad graphics.

If it works, definanlty. Some games just work better in 2D, sidescroller or top-down view. Case in point: worms.
Besides, modern graphics can be applied to 2D images. Nice graphics and 2D are not mutually exclusive. Case in point: trine.

I chose Other because there was no option for "Yes, because some 2D games look beautiful and that's all I'm looking for in graphics"

I really don't understand why people think that "good graphics" means that it has to look realistic instead of just being visually appealing. It's possible to have realistic graphics that are visually appealing, and it's possible to have visually appealing graphics that are not realistic-looking, keep that in mind in case anyone gives you shit about using 2D graphics in your game.

As for what I look for in a 2D RPG, I like how the Zelda games and Secret of Mana did it, open-world, level grinding, loot finding, the occasional puzzle, things like that make it fun for me (but definitely put in an item that increases the amount of XP you get so the level grinding doesn't take as long, that can get repetitive and tedious very fast, just don't increase the XP gain rate too much or players will easily become overpowered very early in the game)

Games like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Muramasa: The Cursed Blade can be fun and engaging without the need for big budget graphics.

I have played 'Iji' and I thought it was fantastic. I have played 'Cave Story' and I thought it was fantastic. I have played 'Sky Island [http://www.kongregate.com/games/Neutronized/sky-island]' and I thought it was fantastic.

I don't really care for graphics, and Yahtzee can probably tell you all you need to know about 2D graphics [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/6372-Extra-Punctuation-The-Conduit]. I still think 'Iji' has some of the best pixel art I've ever seen and it has brilliant writing to boot.

Since when did 2D equate to bad graphics? I think games like Bastion and Chrono Trigger have much more appealing graphics than, say, Call of Duty or Madden.

One of the fundamental problems with games nowadays is that "every game has to be 3D". That's wrong, because 2D and 3D games exist in different realms. Artistically both can be and should be gratifying. I actually prefer a good 2D game over any other 3D game (in fact my favorite game of all time is "Aquaria"), but that's just me. I do realize that working with 2D invokes a different set of rules than working with 3D, some games can't even be 2D, like FPS games. Doesn't mean 2D is less worthy than 3D, they're apples and oranges.

I have an idea of my own of a 2D side-scrolling cyberpunk tactical paused metroidvania RPG with destructible environments that will define gameplay in many ways. That'll be my first serious game dev effort once I finish school.

So, yes, I would buy a 2D game.

I wouldn't pay the same price but yes.
Actually I have. Over the past year I've bought, played through and thoroughly enjoyed games like Braid and Castlevania SOTN which are 2D and one of which is actually an old game.

Exhibit D: Tales of Destiny Remake

Watch on 1080p. Some of the best 2D sprites I've ever seen. Note that sprites and its animations are hand crafted.

I would probably buy a 2D game if it interest me but im a bit of a grafics... well... whore is the most fitting term i suppose!
The reason i got interested in Deus Ex:HR in the fisrt place was the grafics and Battlefield 3, dont even get me started on that one. Even if i would buy it since it's BATTLEFIELD 3 the grafics in that game gives me almost the same feeling as looking on a really hot girl!

Well, I recently acquired, played and enjoyed the pointy clicky Blade Runner game. It was great fun and I was sitting with a Me Gusta face through most of it. As far as I am concerned this proves that good story telling can outweigh graphics. It also helps that I am in a massive Blade Runner craze at the moment.

I said "Other" because the "Yes" option also said that graphics matter, which is utterly false.

No, I am not a arcade games fan. I hate them and they used to be complete and utter bovine excrement. People just like to remember the "good" retro games and forget the shovelware that collapsed the industry back then. But graphics don't matter at all.

What's ironic is that I like Crysis a lot, even though everyone says it's crap and if you are going to play it it's just for the graphics.

games don't have to have good graphics to be pretty. TF2 is running on a 7 year old engine and still looks amazing today (to me anyway) because they chose a unique art style. i think more games should try for stylization.

If it was a cheap indie game, maybe.

Otherwise no, graphics aren't everything, but it's still an important part of the game.
