I enjoy most of these debates, so if you don't enjoy them, just don't go near them. Very simple.
Unfortunately I have recognised that it is nigh impossible to change minds in these debates, that's the most annoying thing about them, and the psychology of humans.
The thing is "changing peoples views" means you must have facts
I'm not sure what subject you're thining about but for example let's take consoles.
Let's say I have owned every Nintendo console since the SNES up to the WiiU and you've had every PS
You giving me a list of the hardware of these two consoles and how they utilize them for their benefits telling me the PS3 is a better machine than, let's say the Wii (back in those days). That is not going to make me buy a PS3, if I've always played Nintendo and own the consoles and like them, why would I change? Maybe a friend of mine owns a PS3 so if I want to play that I can just go over to him and play right?
If we're going into "more serious" debates like Politics and Religion which ´have been going on for thousands of years, these are usually based on a persons view of the world, country whatever, and just saying "there's no scientific evidence a GOD could excist" is "wrong", because religion isn't meant to be a material, true thing (maybe for some) it's supposed to be a mental pillar to which you can lean on when noting else helps. For some it works and for others not.
Then again things you can argue easily about is if I say the whale is a fish and you come up with all the biological evidence it's actually a mammal, that's easy because it is not connected my personal feelings in any way. Usually stuff with strong personal connection like religion or politics there isn't just ONE right. And that's why changing a persons views which they might've upholded for ceveral decades are very hard to change.
But I agree on your first point, If you can't handle a rational debate and go all bananas on your counterpart, don't go into them at all.
