Poll: Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland

Now, I've been a fan of Alice in Wonderland for pretty much my entire life. I grew up on the story, saw the Disney cartoon, and have played American McGee's adaptation of the beloved book so many times I needn't start up another adventure in Wonderland to realize that I probably need a life right about now.

But Tim Burton has done something that has earned him every ounce of my respect...which isn't very difficult to obtain. He, being possibly my most favorite director EVER released the official trailer for his adaptation of Alice in Wonderland not two weeks ago.

Needless to say, I very nearly exploded when I saw the trailer.

I am very excited for this movie. The graphics look awesome, the story seems interesting enough (apparently it is a SEQUEL to the books, but acts as a retelling all the same), and let's face it: it's funny to see Helena Bonham Carter waddle around with her head the size of a wrecking ball.

And Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter...thank you.

Anyone as excited for this as me? (Please...?)

I always thought that Tim Burton would make an excellently warped Wonderland, and it looks like that will be the case.

Eh, Burton really doesn't do it for me anymore. I was severely dissapointed by Sweeney Todd, only entertaining part was when Sacha Baron Cohen was on-screen, and that was for about what, 5 minutes?

Sure it looks good I guess, but it just seems way too reminiscent of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I doubt I'll be seeing it.

I adore Willy Wonka, it is in my to ten for movies easily, and then who fucked it up? That's right. So who's going to probably fuck up another childhood classic? The same person.

While I know Burton knows how to direct a dark film, I don't think he's quite understood what Alice in Wonderland should be like. His films are always overly grim, and Alice in Wonderland should be all about the subtlety.

This. is. precisely. it. Tim Burton is all about shoving the monster in your face and trying to scare you with it. In Alica in Wonderland, the feeling was more the monster is under the bed. You knew it was there and it put a eerie haze on everything that was done. /metaphore.

I'm sick to bloody death of Johnny Depp in Burton movies, but since he's the Mad Hatter, hopefully he won't be on screen too much. And when he is, hopefully he'll actually be funny (I'm looking at you, Willy Wonka).

I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Though I grew up with a (admittedly quite bad) live-action version of Alice in WonderLand [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0164993/]. So I'll be ready to ***** about it.

I really liked Burton's Wonka film--as it followed the book pretty closely and was interestingly sinister.

So I am looking forward to his Alice in Wonderland.

Im waiting for the day Tim Burton does a documentary on Hunter S Thompsons life and gets William DeFoe to play Hunter S Thompson, because I think it would be just about the trippiest movie ever.

To be honest, I liked the 1999 version. Tina Majorino is awesome, and it wasn't until Napolean Dynamite that I realized that she had been Alice.

And Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was really rather good. I'm one who follows stories, not graphics and entertainment value. "Willy Wonka" tried to make things funnier and more entertaining; "Charlie" followed the book much more closely, and for me, that made it somewhat better than the original movie.

But yes, Johnny Depp needs to take a chill pill in Tim Burton movies, as does Helena Bonham Carter...at least, after this movie, they do. ^_^

Burton always does the same dark moody tone is his movies, it's getting old. It shows that he doesn't have a range.

Burton seems to have some kind of man-crush for Depp, and Bonham is quite literally screwing the director, so yeah...

I'm not rally a fan on Tim Burton, I'm not saying he's terrible (I do like several of his films), I just don't get all excited about his work like some do.

I also think he's a little too obsessed with Johnny Depp. I wonder if they go on man dates together.

American McGee's Alice is (and probably will be for a WHILE) still "in pre-production", so there is still hope. I'm so glad that Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't doing it. At first I was kind of excited, but now I think that someone else would be better.

Like Christina Ricci, or Chuck Norris.

While I agree with you, I have to say that the trailer seemed to really fit Alice in Wonderland. Granted, trailers tend to falsify what a movie will actually end up being like. I rather like the idea of a darker Alice, though. I would like some of the subtly to remain, but some of the Alice based stuff I've read over the years stripped off all subtly and were still really good. Never as good as Carroll's work, but they have their qualities. The world he created is just so messed up, you can't really go wrong.

As for the comments about Willy Wonka, Burton proved he can't do remakes of films when he gave us Planet of the Apes. Alice in Wonderland won't actually be a remake, just adaptation. Big Fish ended up being really good, so I've a little higher hopes.
