15% for average service, and for bad service I quote Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) at them.

ok, so, i'm in germany, and i'm a university student with no big income due to said studies gobbling up most of it, but when i go eat somewhere, and me likes it, i tip the waitress about 20%. nobody makes me do it, but i like it that way. I don't need much to live, and i know a bunch of my closer friends do waiting to buff their income for whatever (expensive holiday trips, makeup, shoes, you get the drift).
I don't spend much. I don't sit at my PC the whole day either, but i don't have much to spend on, so why hog it? when i get into a situation where i might think "dude, you shoulda put like 5% of those tips into your bank account" then yeh, screw me. Big whoop. If i need money, i either find a job or save at my hobbies. i don't have to cut off of the waiter/tress' tip to get along.
horray for big tips :D

ps: i don't want a medal or something for being so generous (seeing as it's not really that uncommon) but i'd like others that like (or really need) to save whereever possible to think what it'd be in the waiter/tress' position, usually being either student or rightout broke and unemployed. I have much respect for the guys and gals who put up with people like me (i get grumpy when i'm hungry :D)
this post is waaay longer than i'd intended, but i had to get it off my chest. whoever reads this through will or will not recieve an e-cookie within the next 1-2 hours. leave your mail address below...

I love how in many american resteraunts the servers EXPECT a tip. Some are amazed that they dont get 15% for showing someone to a table taking an order and filling some drinks....

I hate the tipping culture in the US. Drives me insane. If they have done a good job I tip well. I was given suggestions, quick polite service and left wanting to come back I tip 20%. But if all they do is take an order, put me in a seat and fill my drinks. I am sorry but I am not giving them >10%. Never.

I despise tipping and everything it represents.

From rude staff expecting to be given more money, to adding it onto the bill and to the outrageous tipping laws in the US.

In the UK tipping isn't so necessary because of our minimum wage laws, and if I could avoid tipping I would. However not tipping makes people think you are the absolute devil himself, yet if you don't give money to a tramp they will only think you a little stingy at worst.

And some waiters get very angry if you don't tip. So %10, because it was practically forced out of my wallet and into the pockets of the staff by annoying customs.

I don't eat at restaurants often (usually just buffets, or otherwise I order pizza). When I do tip, it's usually just "keep the change" (e.g. if pizza costs 22$ or so, I'd pay 25$).

I try to tip 10% at least, though.

It completely depends; I've given no tip and I've given over 100%. Do the standard, you get the standard. Be terrible, get nothing. Be great, get great.

My tips range from 10 to 20%, and it all depends on how many 1's I have on me at the time. Usually though, I'll tip $2 for a meal that is $15 or cheaper, $3 for a $15-20 meal, $4 for a $20-25 meal, etc...

decent waiters get tipped decently (between 10-15% of the meal, up to 20 dollars) but shitty waiters get tipped SHIT

i go between 15-20% because they are being payed to bring me my food when i could just make my own so they deserve money for having to work when im slaking off

if they are a attentive waiter(tress) or just plain have a personality i don't despize they may be deserving of a higher tip

Half the restaurants or similar I go to give you a 10% "service charge" now anyway, which is basically translated to a tip.
So none half the time, the other half depends on the service.

I generally tip between 15 and 20%, but if the service is less good, then I'll tip somewhere in the neighborhood of 10%. I understand that servers make their living off of tips, so even if it's terrible, I'll tip at least a bit. Though, the smaller the order, the larger I tip usually. I've tipped $1 on a $1.50 order before due to an awesome server.

We tip nothing... In Australia it's not expected. I'd feel so weird giving the staff extra money. o_O
Customers at the restaurant i work at give tips (I live in Sydney).. Well, some do, some dont. Some days i'll get like... $10-$30 in tips, then other days i'll get nothing.

Tips are great, it shows that someone's actually appreciated my working extra hard :)

OP:
I'll tip random amounts, usually just the change i get back. I'll tip more if they were a really good waiter.

Maybe it has something to do with me living in Queensland. :D

For parties of 8 or more it is automatically added unless you talk to the manager (we had to do this once, the server was terrible and because we were a large party he automatically got his tip, the manager apologized took his tip away and we got free desserts :D )

however, if it's a party of 8 or below can choose the amount the tip by writing it on the receipt, or leaving the cash
Many thanks for the info :) I still think its a weird custom though. Why not just put the price of the food up a dollar or two more so your staff get guaranteed proper wages and no one has to worry about maths at the dinner table and everyone's happy??
I will reserve tips for exceptional service and exceptional staff where i see it's deserved, but it'd never be more than $5, because its not customary and because I'm a uni student.
Tipping in Australia is kind of restricted to the small change you have left over being placed in a glass or a jar at the counter...

I don't usually. Best I usually do is tell people to just keep whatever change of the note I give them. So for a £30 meal, they could get as little as about 10p change.

I usually tip fifteen percent for average service, and probably just above twenty percent for really great service.
