If someone you knew thought that your favorite game was diarrhea in virtual form or their favorite game was in your opinion, a complete abomination; how would you react?

I wouldn't care. I'm ostracized for smaller things, so it wouldn't really bother me that much. The only time I do get pissed is when someone just says something flat-out wrong, but that's more of a general pet peeve than favoritism for my game.

Fuck, I could name my favorite video games (not an exclusive list here; just the games that get people going) and get that exact reaction.

Here's a list! Feel free to rage about it:

-Call of Duty Black Ops II (really any of them can go here)
-Battlefield 3
-Madden
-FIFA
-Mass Effect 3 ending
-Dragon Age 2

My reaction:

I suppose I would tell them why I think X is great but I really don't care all that much if they don't like the game. I forgive them; not everyone can be as awesome as I am.

If they just hated it? No. Not liking something is entirely subjective and kind of unimportant. you can like bad things and hate good things, it's simply preference. If they start to confuse opinion and fact and start making claims without arguments then I'll fight tooth and nail! ...If I'm not being lazy anyway XD

Sometimes they can turn into really interesting discussions. A mass effect 3 ending debate I had once turned into a discussion about the role/quality of art and its subjectivity (or lack there of). It was insightful and interesting :)

The following is a joke:
How dare you enjoy those games, they're everything wrong with the industry and you should feel ashamed! You're holding back gaming!

OT: Eh.

People can feel free to love whatever they want. I don't think I've played a game I was interested in that I didn't end up liking in the last seven years.

Now, I'll try to get actual reasons out of people who hate on something I liked, if what they open with is absolutely ridiculous or factually incorrect, but unless their reason for disliking a game is downright stupid (like, say, because of a character redesign) then I won't care either way.

My favorite games are either very niche titles (EWR, FIFA to some extent) or EverQuest, which was popular once, but the things I really enjoyed about it are things that are pretty intolerable to most people playing games these days. Either way, I have no problem with people thinking the games I like are awful. That's fine, games shouldn't be for everyone. That said, if you tell me my game is bad for bad reasons (the always-popular "FIFA is the same game every year" nonsense, for example), I'll be more than happy to tell you exactly how wrong you are. I don't care if you don't like football, EA, or sports games in general, that's fine. But if your only reason is based on something that is only superficially true, I'll let you know.

I wouldn't "tolerate" their opinion but I would not hold it against them or think less of them, when you tolerate someone its like the way adults ignore kids coming out with something silly. Its pretty condescending really, there should always be room for people to disagree on something then discuss it. Good natured arguing can be OK too.

Sometimes I do feel sorry for people that rabidly defend something indefensible, not anything subjective but something thats a fact like a physically broken game. WarZ was a good example, it was broken and the publishers outright lied. Worse even than Colon Marines. Gearbox pulled a bait and switch with the trailer, Hammerpoint advertised and listed a whole bunch of features which where simply not in the game at all. Yet some people defended it the death, sure they might have really enjoyed the game but it seems more like someone suffering a domestically abusive relationship.

I do find it annoying when people get angry or hateful towards people that have different taste in games, never understood the whole "wrraaaghh you are a terrible person stop disliking something I like!" thing and hipsters can be aggravating too. The ones that believe they are superior because they liked something for longer, the ones that believe they are superior for liking/not liking something can be also. Like the "I hate CoD, this makes me awesome and makes people that do like CoD not very awesome /smugface". I just do not understand why people act like that, you would think some people have just been told "I like to eat babies and sexually abuse puppies" if someone posts "I enjoyed DmC".

Differing opinions are great, it all adds to the tapestry of life but getting angry over it? Pointless.

One of my best buddies didn't like Bastion whereas I bloody love it. Clearly on hearing this news I did exactly as any sane person would do: ...Shrug and change the subject.

It's a damned game, who gives a shit? Seriously.

To post a comment invalidates my philosophy on polls unless those polls are the stupid kind like having a ton of useless options or a list of options that are completely misleading and/or incomplete.

So kind sir i would opt for the argue option with a polite conversation over a cup of tea and try to prove someone is out of their damn mind and try to carve my opinions on his bare exposed brain of course.Wait isnt an argument paving the way for a common reasonable consensus that proves my point?Where on the internet have i been?

OT:Argue is not taken as a common and reasonable conversation on the internet,on the internet arguments lead to a fiery exposition of idiocy and fanboism and since the internet is a barren wasteland of common sense so i would gladly jump ship before that.

I remember once in these forums someone told that "opinions are like assholes, everyone has them" and then he received a warning....

As long as we could agree to disagree, it'd be fine.

No matter what a person's opinion on ANYTHING is I almost never argue it. At the least I lightly debate it. I HATE serious debates, they just rile me up and I REALLY don't like it.

I don't like being told that I have to admit that things I like are somehow "objectively" bad or indefensible.

Usually something along the lines of...

"Hey It's okay if you like that kind of thing but you can't honestly tell me that it's a good game..."

Why the hell not? I may like it for my own reasons certainly but that dosen't mean my opinion needs to adhere to your point of view to be considered valid. Some people are just more forgiving of faults than others are or going the other way don't let inconsequential issues ruin their enjoyment, it dosen't make them wrong.

Opinions and discussion is great if people respect each other, it's arrogance and condescension I have a problem with.

sweet jesus, if there was a nuke for the community that was respective of the anger and rage against those games, it'd destroy the whole universe. I'm still in utter shock those are your favorite games.

OT: I usually just nod and change subjects, or i put my opinion on my favorite games out there in such a way not to say they are the best, just the ones I personally enjoy the most.

as long as someone isn't being inherently elitist about their games, i'm generally cool with them liking any games.

I'd talk about it with them because it's a fun conversation and you can try to find out why you differ in opinions and persuade them over to your side. Like isn't that part of the point of any hobby to give you something to talk about with other people?

But it wouldn't be an argument. It's just a game and I'd have fun with the conversation without feeling the need to avoid them over it or stop talking about the game because we disagree on how good it is

EDIT: Actually I'm curious now, isn't this what everyone does? I'm sure most of my conversations about media are a long the lines of 'I really liked this film/game/book' 'I couldn't get into it?' 'Oh why?'... etc. I don't have super favourites but liking something more makes the conversation more interesting

I would be curious and inclined to inquire as to why that would be. Not to prove anyone right or wrong, but because it can be interesting to talk about culture and art. Of course taste is a tricky subject, we don't always know why we like or dislike something, so it may not be possible to discuss it.

I would never make a poll about it however. :p

Tolerance? Fresh out of that. Got the mass grave in the woods to prove it.

OT: I honestly don't care. If someone wants to discuss the subject, civilly of course, than I'm more than willing. If not, oh well.

Hey, I'm very tolerant of other people's options so long as they agree with me.

Anyway, I'd have one lighthearted conversation about it then we'd just agree to let the subject drop.

I wouldn't mind. I know that no game is perfect and unless it was a matter of playing/purchasing the game, I wouldn't care less what they thought about it. If they try to convince me otherwise to my own opinion, then that's a different story.

Seems like a pretty minor thing to raise a fuss about. Unless they were to specifically go out of their way to go on the attack or something. Then I might defend it. But that's as far as I'd go, really.

Depends on the environment where it's being discussed. I don't care if a friend says he didn't like a game I played (and that's happened quite a lot and vice versa) but over the internet in a discussion about it, I like to be able to..you know? Discuss. I've never gotten angry about it and I like debating over their points. Maybe I'll even see the game in a different light. Maybe they will. Since when did talking become arguing?
