I maintain FirstPersonShooters.net which has the most complete list of FPS, over 1000 titles i guess. While i do not believe there are too many, technological advances will always enable new storylines, or at least new ways to experience the same old thing, i have noticed a few disturbingly familiar themes from game to game lately. How many genetic modifications do we need? How often can the government alien conspiracy turn out to be true? Please, let's rearrange our capitalist system to give indie games a better shot!

FPS games are mostly all the same to me. I just play the ones that are actually decent, so for the most part this is not a serious problem for me.

they should have just stopped with TF2..

the gaming industry: "oh crap look at that game, we'll never beat that, lets just give up"

I don't know, there hasn't been any FPS that got my attention since MW2, and I only even rented that to play through the campaign. I went from Yakuza 3 to downloading a couple of fun PSN classics to Red Dead Redemption. What did I miss?

There are a lot of FPS' because it is a formula that works. Of course, not everyone can do it right, but when it is done well, its spectacular. Also, if there weren't that many fps', a lot of people would not have much fun, especially the casual gamers. I mean, I despise them when I come across them and they try to prove they're 'all liek pr0er tan u', but still... without them game companies wouldn't have the money they need to make the games we love. Like, for me, I couldn't imagine gaming without RTS.
1 THING, HOWEVER:
If any of you begin a successful game production company, never let Microsoft have anything to do with it. Just because it worked for Halo, I can assure you there are hundreds of games that they stuffed up. The Mech series, for example. (LOL, had to say that)

some FPS games feel so ridiculously easy compared to that stuff. Is it simply because we are trained to the "Go in there. shoot everything that isnt human/wears a different color uniform than you, and move on to the next building." mentality?
summary of mario: Go in here, jump on everything that isn't you, move on.

Try not being so condescending and nostalgic.
yes there are a lot of FPS games out there, with the success of titles like call of duty, and halo, why wouldn't there be? There is also almost every other genre of game imaginable, especially when you include the XBL/PSN marketplaces.

Lets think about the most popular games to come out recently: Red dead redemption, a free roaming 3rd person action game. Alan wake, a psycological thriller/ 3rd person shooter. Heavy rain a story based game fueled by quicktime events. Super mario galaxy 2, a 3rd person puzzle / action game. split second, skate 3, prince of persia etc.

see what i'm getting at?

small time game companies may be jumping on the fps bandwagon, but the only big fps titles are call of duty, halo, battlefield, and medal of honour.(i didn't include resistance or killzone since they haven't brought anything out recently)

Gears of war? (I know it technically isnt FPS, but it very well could be.) and lets add some other older titles: DOOM, Timesplitters, the 007 games, perfect dark had a little something going there. Haze, crysis, left for dead 1&2, Histoy channel games (which suck), quake series, Star wars has a few. all those tom clancy games( they have enough guns going off to qualify as the general shooty shooty bang bang brouhaha) F.E.A.R., Fallout 3, Half life, counter strike.... need I go on.

and while im talking to you: wee bit defensive are we? (next time feel free to just check "no" on the poll, mmkay?) Try not to be one of those guys (for your sake, seriously....) to whom the internet is just a means of character attack kay? lol)

Eh, it's something that won't go away, but hopefully so many shameless copies will stop coming out. The FPS is hard to change because you don't want to break what isn't broken! I mean, there's broken and then their's overused, and those are totally different problems.

You are right though, the games that are coming out aren't all that different. They almost always have the pillars of FPS; shotgun, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, machine gun. A lot of the new ones are just the same thing again with a twist! Now you have shields, now it's in 1980, now you can blah, blah, blah. It would be cool to see something start out a totally new and different approach to the FPS genre.

I'm thinking of something along the lines of Portal, only with competitive modes and more guns like the portal gun that are just as creative1

Remember the times when Rpg's flooded the market followed by adventure games with cutesy mascot characters? Pepperidge farm remembers.

Seriously though if you don't like FPs your in serious trouble because there is barely anything outside that bubble.

I'm allergic to any game that isn't FPS...

I do like them all, but some are just cheap rip offs of others, this however, doesn't stop you from playing the original one :D
