So, as an American (though really, a few of my more international friends have noticed it to), its getting rather tiring to see the argument over whether Rugby or (American) Football is tougher. So I figured I'd ask (hey, its the Super Bowl, I'm in a sporting mood), what the toughest Sport is.

Disclaimer, did not include things like boxing or mixed martial arts because the entire point of that is beating the hell out of the other guy. This is talking purely about sports where the point is NOT to purposely injure the other person.

I think its Hockey. Seriously, I do. You're skating around at break neck speeds, on a single, VERY thin blade (per foot), and you're wielding a stick. Players get concussions that put them out for entire season, you play more rapidly, and you can get hit without even having the puck. Men can get slammed in the face with a puck, have to have an entire facial reconstruction, and get torn open just through a bare knuckle hockey fight or with the stick.

To add a personal touch to it, I know I've been injured and have injured people. One story I can tell where both instances involved the same guy. I was ijured when our team was injured, and the defenseman on the other team got sick of it and just used his stick like a sword and just cleaved into my side. it cracked a rib, bruised three more and cut into me, needing me to have ten stitches. So after I healed and went back out the same thing happened, where my team was winning and the same kid tried to do the same thing. So instead I stopped him and drove my stick into his helmet, trying ot knock him back down with a concussion and accidentally caught him beneath his helmet and caused some brain damage.

Also, kinda like a side note, my Captcha said Hanson weasy. Just thought that was kinda funny.

EDIT:
A second question was posed that I find kinda interesting. What Sport has the toughest players/competitors/whatever you'd like to call them?

I'd have to say Fencers. Why? Cause I've had personal experience in that, but before I go there, I'll say this. Ever seen what a Fencer sees? its a Sword. Pointed at you. With the intent to hit you with it. And can kill you. I think the fact alone none of them shit themsleves is impressive on its own.

As to my personal experience, you should try fencing without the suits or padded equipment, without a tipped rapier. I have. Its not fun, and the scar I have on my leg where my friend pretty much drove his rapier through it is proof enough (especially since he almost neutered me).

EDIT2:
It was brought to my attention that when hockey was being read, people thought it was field hockey. Well, I was thinking Ice hockey, but I've seen field hockey being played, so it could be either. If you play deck hockey, or just hockey on roller skates) its still as tough, there's just easier balance (but thats debatable on the level of Rugby Vs. American Football). So hockey is just the general summing up term, but if you pick hockey, feel free to specify. That why the choice is edited to look like it is, which hopefully helps

EDIT3:
The question of what is meant by toughness has come up. Toughness has no set definition, cause this was mainly just a thread about trying to answer the debate between whats tougher Rugby or American Football. So toughness is at the discretion of the poster and what you think is the toughest sport by how ever you judge toughness

I've got to agree with you. Hockey is just a bad ass sport. Followed closely by American football and rugby.

Hockey, playing it professionally, is very difficult. Stick handling, skating skills, awareness of where your team is, shooting skills, speed...

All the while you're thinking of this you're having to avoid falling on your face or getting a concussion after being rammed into a wall.

I say hockey. Anyone who thinks that American Football is the toughest sport needs to look at the atheletes playing in the Superbowl right now.

Buncha' pussies running around out there...

If by "toughest" you mean hardest to play or most complicated, then tennis by far. For all the calculations and tiny, unnoticeable movements of hands and wrists and judging angles and distances and gravity that a quarterback has to do for each pass, tennis players have to do with more precision against a moving target every 5 seconds. And with almost every other sport the distance between a beginner and a professional isn't that big, but in tennis, most beginners can't even hit a ball over the net.

wow.... I'm really surprised. I didnt think there would be this much Hockey love.

I can only say... GO PENS! XD But seriously, I'm glad I'm not insane in thinking that its the toughest sport (physically alone, though a good point was made about the skills you need).

Hockey or Rugby.

Hockey takes so much coordination and physical endurance. Balance is also a big point. 82 games a season of this I might add. No offense Football fans but your sports players he only have to play 16-20 games a season As physical as football is, Hockey is just as much, if not more so and the play is sustained for longer periods of time. Goaltending is possible one of the hardest positions to play in all of sports. You have fractions of seconds to decide what your going to do to stop that round piece of rubber before it reaches you. A slight error or hesitation and that puck is behind you. Some goalies see upwards of 30 shots a night, and it isn't unheard of in this day and age for a goalie to face 40+ on a regular enough basis. Goalies must be quick, agile, and strong. They wear 40 pounds or so of equipment which limits movement, and must stay on the ice for most of, if not the entire, game. There's just no comparison to me.

Shit, that was brutal. In my years playing I still saw a lot of bad stuff but nothing specifically like that.

One guy got a skate blade to the neck once in the game before ours. That wasn't at all pretty.

As a goalie I never had to do much of the physical work in a game, I did get a few hits and all but those are few and far between for a goalie in comparison to regular players. Though when a goalie hits someone, man does it get the crowd on their feet :p

Heres me hoping you were a fan BC (before Crosby). I hate fair-weather fans.

But yes, go Pens. Too bad the Caps beat them today. Its not like Ovechkin needs a bigger head.

Hockey by far. I know several people that have been seriously injured, and I've heard of a few deaths as well. And it just isn't fun to use your body to stop flying pucks.

Aww you really love me :p

I guess that is a fair analysis of what goalies go through. After I got so used to it though it became a little easier, at least I can't say it is as hard as you describe it on a regular basis. I guess enjoying goal tending helps there though.

That said, we goalies definitely have one thing no one else can compare to: fucking slap shots. Try being on the receiving end of that shit and then try NOT thinking about if your family jewels will make it out alive.

I'd have to go for professional fighting. Boxing especially or UFC. The training and risk of injury is huge. Insofar as team sport is concerned it would be Aussie Rules. It's like American football minus the gear and safety rules.

A Zdeno Chara Slapshot renders a cup useless.

This is a known fact... :p

I'd like to see you in the net and face a slapshot without wincing.
