It seems with the increase of video games, music, and telivison shows it is even harder and harder for one's opinion to be heard. Here is my examples: My friends. Being the "emo" of the group i have a very interesting taste in music. Ironically I have a few best friends who's favorite band is slipknot. So every band, song, album, Musician is no were near as good as slipknot or any of there work. It really doesn't get to me because I have my opinion and my opinion is "slipknot can go away they are nothing compared to Gerard Way, Synyster Gates, Travis Barker, Jared Leto, or Chris Carrabba".
Another example is in video games i favor World War Two and Third Person Shooters but in art class years ago "Those are nothing comapred to brawl and if you dont like it it's probably because you suck at it NOOB"! Again with the hate for my little opinion. And last example is here on The Escapist. Now I personally don't like new anime besides Death Note and One Piece because it is the same for each one other than those. OH BIG EYES AND BOOBED 13 YEAR OLD SCHOOL GIRLS FIGHTING DEMONS!!! And for saying this I was reported for trolling.
Now I ask you. The Reader, why is it that you think opinions are being shot down? Give me your opinion or stories. I'd like to know that I'm not the only person facing this problem. I feel like freakin' Montag(Fahrenheit 451 allusion)

A lot of opinions are being shot down because they are often based off of dumb ideas and reasons.

People prefer what they like?

I'm not sure what's so groundbreaking about that.....

Your opinions on music are relative, as are anyone's. Some people go to school for years on how to evaluate music, but at the end of the day it really comes down to if you like it or not based on your personality.

I don't feel that any of my beliefs are being shot down.

Could you please quantify that for me? What is a dumb idea and a dumb reason?

It's because the friendliness and openness of this board is a huge lie. I got flamed and reported for saying that because of a fundamental difference in beliefs and values, parts of the Middle East will always be hostile towards America.

Opinions and beliefs are like arseholes. Everybody has one, nobody wants to hear them.

By who, Bush?
By many upstanding members of this "tolerant" and "open" community with post counts that rival yours.

Really? That seems...reasonable, although I disagree. How did you word it?

in the first two cases it's because you're in junior high/high school, and at that age everyone thinks they're smarter than everyone else. in the last case it's because you made a post with an inflammatory point of view that was neither well thought out nor well defended.

EDIT:

An idea or opinion that is either one sided or lacks the proper education on the subject.

The following are arguments made by a user in threads they created. They were later ripped to shreds by blood thirsty moderators.

Idea: "We should nuke China"

Reason: The OP believed it would prevent an "inevitable" war.

Ahh. Theuromancer. The problem is when you shoot down that kind of idea it is impossible to do so without derailing a thread and making all the other posters giggle. If people just said "oohhhkay right" and carried on talking things might retain some interest, not that the gladitorial sport of internet humiliation isn't gratifying occassionally, but still it isn't necessary quite as often as people engage in it.

To the 20% percents of people who are apathetic to what other people believe: People affect you. They affect everything you do and several of the important things you think. Also, you are probably much shallower than you are letting on, so stop bullshitting and admit to the fact that you do give a flying phuck about the opinions of the idiots we call friends, colleagues, or 'equals'.

To the 60% of the people who think the man is putting them down: REALLY? It is not being shut down, no, it is merely being swarmed by the mindless hordes I just referred to that cause your ideas and beliefs to be so menial that you might as well be dead.

Imagine a world where all the idiots were cut out and only productive members could remain, there would only be roughly 10,000 people. Lets take a test sample, 20% of the people here are apathetic, so they are gone. The majority of the people who said yes are likely to be idiots. the people who said no are likely ignorant, idiots, ignorant idiots, or in the highly unlikely event, intelligent. There are three levels of intelligence 1. Smart 2. Naive 3. YOU....well maybe, the lowest level is Apathy. It is the worst because most everyone has the ability to lets say get an A in school. Its apathy that makes students not care enough to try or to pay attention. Naive is second because there are many intelligent people in the world who simply cant grasp certain concepts that relate to society or religion or socialism. Smart is the highest because if you don't know then please don't kill yourself. A knife is not a toy.

Back to the utopia shall we? In this perfect country of 10000, it would be extremely dull do to the fact that there are no noobs to pwn, no scamming,, oh and the imprtant one: No one wasting money on crap they don't need and probably don't want.

So if you are to learn anything, remember that you need idiots for things to run. To put into a gaming perspective and quote PurePwnage: "Do not hate noobs, for without them, there cannot be leet"(1337, ha Im helping level 1 intelligence people).

Now imagine how dull things would be if everyone had the same sense of humor. That would suck wouldn't it? Well if you agree with me you are naive. This is because if said scenario were so, all comedy would be funny to you and everyone else! So the logic does not work if used algebraically, it is logic, so it must be thought out.

Tolerance of opinion is essential to keeping an open mind, but having an open mind does not mean allowing any idiot with a megaphone the right to spout his bullshit anywhere he cares to take it.

Idiots spouting off about intolerance is how people like Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey get thousands of children in a situation where they could die of easily preventable diseases. It's how vitamin deficiencies get started in societies filled with nutritional abundance. And it's how people get snookered into parting with thousands of dollars on things like "alternative medicine" and Scientology and anything else that's designed for the sole purpose of enriching idiots with megaphones spouting their bullshit.

At some point, you just have to tell someone to shut the fuck up so that open-mindedness can continue to be a reasonable, worthwhile pursuit to advance the sum of knowledge.

well, on an internet forum, there are always going to be people who will disagree with you just for the sake of it.

You do sound a little young. I think that you'll find as you get older, and your friends get older, you'll all mature, and your tastes will diversify, until you realise that "Just because you don't like it, don't mean it ain't no good!" (thanks to Cyco Mike for that ST quote).

Everyone is different and has different opinions, we all just need to respect those differences and get along.

It depends on how you word it.

I think that most animes are terrible repeats of the same ideas where a kid gains powers and fights evil then his rival finds he has the same power, they fight and then team up. The protagonists friend (who is a large chested girl with 4IQ) finds she has powers and tries to help but is often in need of saving, then they find a battle arena and starts the filler eps etc etc. Though there are a lot of good ones out there to counter this, such as Outlaw Star, Excel Saga, FLCL where their stories deviate from this cliche and have characters that feel unique and fun.

What I did there was I said that I feel that most animes are like such and gave a reason and some ideas why, I didn't just say "all anime is crap" as if it were a fact then backed it up with what I like. Trolls tend to just scream loudly what's on their mind in the 4 seconds that they're actively using it and whine when they get banned for it.

That's why I never say anything that could be considered controversial. You can say something is good, but don't say it's bad.
And yes. Sometimes I feel like people on here are splitting hairs about my commets for some reason.
