I play CoD but I also play Okami, I play Super Street Fighter 4 but also play Bioshock, I play Demon's Souls but also play Minecraft.
Exactly the same as me.

I'm a eclectic-taste gamer.

I work alot so I probably don't play as much as most hardcore gamers, but I consider myself a little on the hardcore side. Not the "i'm better than you" dick-like hardcore gamer, i'm nice to everyone, least I try to be =P. But I do play games or do game/computer related stuff in almost all my spare time.

this entirely. i play the piss out of my games, but i get competitive about it maybe 2% of the time, and i highly enjoy reading up on/messing around with game stuff.

Like most people, between hardcore and casual. I play too much to be casual but I'm not competitif enough to be hardcore.

Hm... I do not really fit into any of those categories. I play a variety of games from all over the world and all time periods, and I am not very competitive. I never take the time to master a game either, I usually just play it to completion. It makes me think I am casual. But... I play games way to often to fall under the "casual" definition either. So... Hardcore casual, or something like that I guess?

This.

I play my fair share of Plants vs. Zombies, but enjoy some Silent Hill and Mass Effect, and even dabble in competitive games like TF2 and Call of Duty.

I don't fall into any of these. I'm pretty much a hybrid of the hardcore and casual gamer. I play games that interest me, and I play them a lot, and they aren't games like Farmville or Bejeweled. But I don't "practice", nor do I want to be a master. I play just to have fun.

I have never played in a tournament and I never join any clans, but I have played +100 hours of Civ V and Black ops.

Agreed.

You want "types" of gamer? Here are my interpretations, what they mean, and some of their most likely favorite games.

Story Gamer: Plays for the...well story, duh. and characters. or plays SP of games only. Bioshock, Mass Effect.

Immersion Gamer: Plays for the sheer "escapist" experience of getting lost in a virtual world. Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Assassin's Creed.

Competitive Gamer: Cod, Halo and sport sims like NBA. Wants to beat other people not any AI.

Challenge Gamer: Either tests of reflex (Super Meat Boy) or cognitive thinking (Portal). Plays for the sheer pleasure of overcoming a challenge.

Casual Gamers: Turns out, simple games (like Angrybirds) are a much better way to waste the time whilst standing in line then most other media.

Those are the ones i could think of off the top of my head. Feel free to contribute. Oh, and I'm mostly an immersion gamer though i do love me some well-written stories!

I play games for fun. I enjoy hard games as much as easy ones. I play all sorts of types of games. I am just a gamer. No type needed.

There are no branches of gamers, just gamers.

You don't see movie-watchers calling themselves hardcore or casual movie-watchers.
Actually, the "hardcore movie watchers" end up being referred to as film snobs or movie fanatics. Just like people who are book worms are "hardcore literature enthusiasts". There is elitism in every form of media (except maybe TV, but I am not willing to commit to that idea yet) and the people who don't appreciate their favorite version of the media are bringing down the rest of it (Twilight, casual games, A-Team or rom-coms, any genre of music you don't like).

I'm not calling you out on doing this, but it is a common occurrence.

OT: Casual, only because I don't need an involved story to be entertained (it helps some times) but if I truly want a story I will end up picking up a book instead.

What a load of tosh, this is the thread of an inexperienced person. Casual gamers are not predominantly female, and the categories are too limited, and frankly, are a load of rubbish. If you feel the need to label everyone in your head, then fine, but there is no criteria for playing games. People play the games they like, end of. There is no racial/gender divide between them

i guess that im closest to 'hardcore', got a well built custom machine and i tend to obliterate my friends in competitive multiplayer, however, i rarely play a game to 100%, i dont compete in tournaments or the like, and tend to fail vs those that do

First of No one brought anything up involving races. Secondly As I have mention before in my first post, I took the categories from wikipedia and was curious to see where people saw themselves in wiki's eye. I've also stated that I felt that I didn't really belonged to one category over the other. So yes it is limited, but i repeat i did this out of curiosity.

Pretty much between casual and hardcore, leaning towards hardcore based on how long I've been playing and that I like anything from very involved RPGs to shooters, but I don't generally do multiplayer, I prefer to play for fun.

Of those options, id have to say im a noob gamer, not very good at most competitive games, but i have enough interest in them not to be a casual gamer.

Not as simply answered as you might assume. I strictly play hardcore games (unless people are over), but I don't "game" enough anymore to qualify otherwise. I've got too many other things to focus on (drumming, writing, career, et al.). Plus I piss my pants at the sight of a new retro thing like Megaman 10 or Donkey Kong Country Returns.
