I preferred Lightning and Vanille to the other characters.

Lightning because she punches Snow fairly often, and Vanille because she's completely manic.

When it comes to JRPG archetype characters, maniacs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> depressives.

Everyone but Vannille, Hope and Lightning must seriously, get locked in a room with Batman, Ootis Toole, and Jeffrey Dahmer. Seriously.

PS : I only liked Hope because he 1.) At least bothered to have a personality, even if it's a whiny, under-aged, selfish personality 2.) He's one of the few characters who's actually half-helpful in the Awful Combat system.

Are you guys all talking about her English voice here? Cause if not I'm slightly confused lol.

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you on her English VA sucking, but this thread is about the real Vanille, not just some dub of her...and the real Vanille was a joy to listen to.
I don't think having her in a language a very, very small amount of us can understand makes her a "fake" version.
If all we have is subtitles, aren't we basically back to the days of the text box?

Either way, I liked her, voice and all. It got a little annoying every now and again, but she's dim and ridiculously happy. It suited her.
I think the main reason I liked her was because she cancelled out Hope's constant ANGST!
Since she was my major medic my first time through XIII, her holding my party up after my dumb ass let them go down every 10 minutes probably adds to the positive opinion I have.

EDIT:
Oh, there's also the thing of me barely playing any JRPGs before this. Can't be sick of some archetype if I've barely even seen it before.

...and here I thought this was a thread about vanilla, just spelled the French way...

But no, I've never liked the Final Fantasy "batshit wacky teenage girl" archetype. Yuffie and Selphie were both just begging to be stabbed and left on the side of a road to rot somewhere. I'd imagine little miss french vanilla is much the same.
I like vanilla some people believe it is plain and unoriginal but I think it is good.
Vanille I'm rather indifferent to unlike vanilla, mmmm ice cream.

Like all media, the real version is the original version.

Just because people wouldn't understand it won't make something original or true magically into something unoriginal and untrue. It's certainly a correct economical idea but economics as well have nothing to do with who a character in what they sell actually is and sounds/acts like.

Subtitles work for movies just fine, people don't feel like they're watching a silent movie when they watch subtitled movies, the same goes for videogames. Unless you're one of those firm believers that gamers are inferior to movie fans and can't read because it's too much work for their fun or simply are too bad at reading to keep up with a movie's subs, you should agree with me.

I didn't much care for her from the very beginning. Up until the 2-hours-in mark that starts the actual game off it's almost like she's trying to mask her accent or something (which is understandable, but) it just comes off as frigging annoying.

I never actually got around to beating the game so I don't really know how her character evolves after about 15 hours into the game, but I just really didn't like anything to do with her.

I don't like her character or her voice, and to me she doesn't even have looks to compensate. I don't necessarily "hate" Vanille, but I don't really like her either.

Great to look at, but felt like muting the television every now and then when she talked. Wouldn't want to kill her. After all, her Death spell is good help against those huge turtle-dino monsters at Pulse. Maybe if she wore something more skimpy, I'd be better distracted to not notice her voice.

To quote ducky, from land before time: No no no no no no no no noooooooo! god her voice is nails on a chalkboard and the content of her convo's is no more intelligent then Tea's friendship speeches from Yu-Gi-Oh.

The only way Vanille could have been worse is if she yelled "Hey! LISTEN!" every three steps ;).
The painful thing is that this is not difficult to imagine....

What's also painful to imagine, is that I could imagine these characters being so much more engaging. Say, for example, if Vanille, in all her "ditzyness", could show even a speck of venom, as her best paradigm might suggest....

I liked Vanille for the way she she trys to cope with the extreme situations she's in. She trys to deflect and avoid the emotional trauma that she should be experiencing, while also trying to protect those around her from the gravity of the events occurring. It makes her seem like a very human sort of character. I actually thought all of the 6 main cast were pretty believable versions of their archetypes. Except for maybe Fang, she's introduced late and is underdeveloped in my opinion. Her archetype is kind of lazily handled. I think she's supposed to be the tough person who does everything they can to protect their companion, Vanille, but the twist is supposed to be that she's really emotionally vulnerable and upset because she knows that Vanille has been lying to her about being Ragnarok and she carries all of the guilt for the things she's done. The climax does something interesting with Fang, but I liked the gradual development of the rest of the characters more. My favorite character is Sazh by far. The moment where he looks at his gun and the little chocobo flys onto the tip was one of the most emotionally compelling scenes I've seen in a game.

Though it did kind of annoy me that Vanille's accent kept changing every few lines.

i love how nobody gets that vanille only acts that way so nobody knows what she is really feeling, her craziness actually means something unlike Yuffie and Selphie who were cooky for the sake of being cooky

I didn't like her at first, but she turned out to be a great character. Not saying she is my favorite, but a great character nonetheless. Yay for character development!
Plus, how can you not like her even a little bit after she and Fang basically saved everyone?

Vanille and Fang were my favorites. ^^ Always good to see a well written lesbian couple in any game, let along a JRPG.

Didn't really like Vanille. She was kinda creepy for me.

The only character I liked in that game was Sazh.

I like Final Fantasy XIII, but if someone were to brutally kill Vanille, I would be so happy. I despise that little *****.

I liked her. Her voice and personality were alright. Then again, I also liked Selphie and Yuffie. I have friends with far more grating personalities. It's just something you get over. The only character I had no love for was Snow.

Wait a minuit? Vanille and Fang were a lesbian couple? And they weren't being played for Fanservice? This game went from "Awesome" to "Game of the Year 2010!" But, seriously, it is refreshing to see something like that portrayed as being healthy, and not just them doing it for the dudes.

Love her, her voice actor was Nia from Gurren Lagann (Japanese version) so I was instantly attracted to her genki mannerisms.
That makes a lot of sense, though she sounded pretty different to me.

Since you brought up Gurren Lagann, I'd like to point out that Snow and Kamina are pretty much the same character archetype with the same purpose. At the beginning of the story, horrible things happen to them and the people they care about because of their immature attitudes of wanting to play the hero. But as the story progresses, the audience see's that heroes are necessary. For Snow, his recklessness is tempered by the adventure and he gains a new inner strength from his dedication to finding a way to bring back Serah. For Kamina, his example inspires the heroes that end up saving the world. Different resolutions, but similar character arcs.
