From the way things are happening now, I'm a bit concerned about my future choice to go into game design. What do you guys think?

The usual consumers of videogames cover a wide demographic... It won't suffer as bad as the rest of the economy, but sales will slow with drops in the market I'm sure... As for a choice of going into game design: It's a great career still! Competitive I'm sure, but a valid pursuit and sure worth it (though the hours are horrible I've heard, But that's just part of a gamer culture eh?)!

Well this article CLICK [http://biz.yahoo.com/ts/080416/10412235.html?.v=3] was written a few months ago, but I think it still applies. I'd like to know why you are concerned?

Maybe the games won't suffer but I will suffer once I have to start saving money on things I actually need once the depression hits.

Maybe LBP, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, and L4D will have enough playtime to last me for the rest of the generation....

Oh Dawn of War 2 still needs to get here soon though!

considering most generic thoughts are directed to.

event > depression > less sales of "luxury" items > less revenue > cutbacks.

depending on how immediate of a decision you require, i would advise waiting it out, to see what happens, after the bill has passed (which i think it has yes?) and well yeh...

I don't think they'll suffer tremendously, but I do think we'll see a shift down from big-money games to more of the 'sequel' titles for a while, since we're less likely to spend money on titles we're not sure about, which makes the developers less likely to give odder titles a shot...

Things go up and down. If game design is what you love, then stick with it and be prepared to make sacrifices if necessary. Good luck with it, man.

I honestly don't think with today's economy that it will suffer enough to destroy it, however the winds of change are coming, so who's to tell in the next 5-10 years.

I always thought the game industry would do well in this economic climate. think about it once you have the hardware then the game is just a one of payment with tons of replay ability. So one game would worth buying over say a trip to the cinema and a meal as its more cost effect, plus its in the comfort of you own home and you get your friends round to have fun to.

I personally think the gaming industry could do quite well at this moment in time.

Well, as far as I can see, the video game industry is still on the rise. However, I definately think that if the big "disaster" that is looming does strike it wont obliterate the game industry but they will make cutbacks. Cutbacks=fewer companies hiring=me with no job.

I am still open to the idea of making my own company, but with the way the banks are heading, I might think otherwise.

It'll defnitely drop based on the fact that in general most people are forced to cut back their own disposable income when money becomes tight and the economy is in the toilet.

I do think the game industry will fare better than movies and other things based on the fact that a $60-70 game will generally give you more bang for your buck than a $10/90minute film.

stocks are plummeting, but so far it is only hurting 401k's and those kind of stocks. it's basically something that we're going to have to weather the storm until it gets better.

If we're really, really lucky a decreased propensity for people to make extravagant purchases will encourage the consoles to do less of the ridiculous penis-extending exercises we saw in the last generation that led to them being so expensive *shakes fist*. Yeah, I'm looking at you, Sony.

If games start costing $80 a pop [See Spore] then I think there will be a dip but I doubt it will continue.

Which brings me to another point... Why the hell would I spend $80 on Spore? From what I've read here the regular game doesn't last long at all and the "online" portion consists of sharing your models. It sounds like you could get most of the "content" out of Spore just by downloading the creature creator...

I doubt the gaming market will suffer terribly. Entertainment goods usually go into excess demand during times of financial burden, the cinema industry exploded during the great depression because citizens were happy to devote their paychecks towards mindless fun as to temporarily forget they were standing in their own filth.

Like ElArab said, the US economy does have a major influence on the global economy, so people all across the globe will feel the pinch.
