Absolutely, it's a law and retailers should have to follow it. I've been ID'd every time I bought an M-rated game though, so most of the ones I know are doing good, but if they don't, why not have the right to sue them?

Kids should have to pay a hobo $5 to buy violent video games for them, like I had to do back in the day.
(Disclaimer: I never actually did this.)

But, um. You have to be of age or have parental permission to do this. This is the most retarded thing I've heard in a while.

Basically California wants to fine retailers that sell M rated games to underage kids.
Personalty I don't care ether way as most stores I have been asked for ID if I was buying an M rated game when i was about 18 so i guess its doing nothing but enforcing an already accepted practice.

I do hope games get protection under the first amendment which seems to be the argument behind the court case from the looks of it.
Hell fucking yes. Children shouldn't be allowed to buy porn, and they sure as hell shouldn't be able to buy games with it (without parental consent, of course.)
who buys porn these days..??? its free freaking all over the place.

well im pretty sure bars get fined for selling underage kids drinks..so i dont see why this wouldn't also apply here

however, what kid is going to complain or admit to being sold the M rated game??

I'm all for this, even though I live here in NZ. Parents need to know what their kids are playing. It's a good step towards being good parents.

It should also help transfer accountability to the right people.

Completely agreed.

However, I don't think parents should even allow their kids to buy that stuff at all. I'd rather let my kids be kids, and then allow them to grow up and learn about sex normally, preferably by asking us parents. But that's probably because I don't trust anyone else to teach my kids about sex.

IMO there's a difference between sex education and porn.

There is no rational reason to prevent children seeing porn.
Porn is too unrealistic, and kids generally aren't mature enough to properly understand what's going on. There are better ways of teaching kids about sex.

But apparently I'm on your ignore list anyway so you won't be reading this any time soon.

Porn desensitzes, raises false expectations and destroys the imagination (as in, they are likely to develop dull sex lives due to lack of creativity and curiosity). Also, there are serious amounts of disgusting sex practises recorded on video I would love to have erased from my adult mind, let alone have any kid watch them.
wait wait what? what log is that? destroys the imagination? if anything i've LEARNED a thing or two from the porn i had seen, i thought to myself a few times (wow never thought of that, i'll have to try that to my girl and see how she feels about it), if anything it helped STIMULATE IT (which is one of the points of porn, to stimulate you), those "disgusting" things you talk about, its called rape, and torture, and thats against the law, so that point is null and its sad that you had to see that sure, but thats not what he was talking about

/end rant off topicness

Basically this. I've seen kids go around stores playing games they obviously shouldn't be playing and knowing kids like me who aren't old enough to buy them without permission would abuse it. I know that the second they make it legal, the stores would run out of copies of Grand Theft Auto IV and Madworld by kids who aren't allowed to play it. They'll do it behind their parents' backs.

Also, if they're going to do this with video games, do it with movies as well. I'm pretty sure I'll be okay if my mother doesn't sit with me and makes sure I behave when I'm watching Zombieland.

I have to lean towards yes. There is a rating system but why bother if no one is going to enforce it. The policies are already in place and there should be some damned punishment for those who violate them for a buck.

I would go one step further: If it looks like the person is purchasing the product for a minor then refuse to sell. Shops can already be fined for selling smokes to a person buying them for a minor, so why not for games too?

At the very least it will stop the damn parents from complaining when they are stopped and informed giving said games to a minor is a crime punishable by heavy fines.

No no no no no!
Though it's against the law, they still should not be fined.
I wouldn't have been able to play alot of great games like Bioshock, or Assassin's Creed, if the dude at my local video store hadn't had a problem with selling them to me at the time when I was 15-16. He was iffy about it, but as long as I didn't tell anyone, then it would be fine. If this law had been in place, I'm sure there's no way he would have sold them to me, on the off chance he would get fined hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Of course retailers should be fined if they sell an M rated game to a minor. Video games have ratings for a reason.

Think of it this way. People always complain about how violent video games are and how they are "corrupting" our children, right? Well guess what, you have to be 17 to buy those games. Children can't even get their hands on them without their parents' permission.

The only thing up for debate in my opinion is the required age and the rating system.

Are there fines for purchasing alcohol and cigarettes under age? Yes?

Are there fines for purchasing films under age? No?

Huh, so are video games in the realm of narcotics or entertainment? Personally, I say entertainment.

MY BAD!! I accidentally didn't read the sell to minors part... So no you shouldn't sell them to minors, thats why minors also cannot buy porn or whatever.

I have no problems with putting rules on selling games to certain ages. You can't sell a Rated R movie to minors, so why sell rated M games? Maybe a fine will finally kick all gamestores into checking ID for Mature game sales.
I don't believe this is true. I used to work at an electronics store, and we were told to watch for kids with games, not movies. I can't say I ever saw a kid with a R rated movie, but still there was no rule about it.

Why they put the big M and 17+ on the box (not to mention the gun with a chainsaw on the cover).

More minors with mature games means more squeaky voices on XBL, and I can't let that happen.

It should stay as it is. I'm 16 years old, and by the time I have kids, there's no telling what crazy things games will have. I wouldn't let my son play a game like Dante's Inferno until he was at least 14, and I would have a serious talk with him before giving it to him. With this law in effect, if a kid wants a game and a parent feels it's too violent, tough shiz.

Although that's something parents need to decide FOR THEMSELVES. They need to research the game their kids want and determine themselves if it's appropriate.

Luckily I'll be 17 soon and I won't need to worry.
