As a 16-year-old I have enough to ***** about what with getting paid less than everyone else for the same work without having no say about where my hard-earned tax money goes. I'd also like to add that being entirely ignored is a pain in the arse.
So I'd go for, in Australia, optional voting from 16-18, and the usual mandatory after that.
The 16 to 18 age bracket isn't meant to be you working full time though, the intent is that you are getting a foot in the door before you go out into the so-called "real world" so you have some experience and an idea about it. Your pay rate is intended to reflect that. (Also, "suck it up cupcake" because life will not be handed to you on a silver platter, no matter how good you are).
Being ignored is part of the "shit kicking" initial job phase. Respect is to be earned, not expected.
Personally, whilst there are a few (and yourself Tess I would consider ok in this respect) individuals under an age that I would trust to vote, the majority of them I wouldn't.
Hell I don't trust most people under 25 to be voting, so how does that count.
