Lowering the voting age to 16 is foolish. At least till the government realise that atudents need political education before 16.
At 16, in my opinion based on my experience of people i have met, most people are not mature enough to be trusted. The amount of retarded 16/17 year olds i know who say vote bnp and so on.
People need to be less ignorant and more mature before the voting age can be lowered to 16
You are not being serious. Am I the only person who doesn't know any teens who think the BNP are 'Well orwight'? I'm a teen myself dammit!
I didn't say all teens. I know a few who are well informed but the majority are just plain ignorant and immature. Fortunately, i come from a fairly retarded and ignorant area that doesn't represent all of the UK. Hopefully there are more of the educated kind out there but i doubt it
And you're argument about joining the army at 16, you can join at 16 but legally you cannot be put in a combat situation until you are 18
Well thank you for correcting me. But still, I know NO-ONE who's like that... Why do they think about voting for them> Have they SEEN some of their views? EDIT: Age: 15

Going tangentially OT, but still: it's true that you have to work for your money to truly understand its value, but I think you really have misunderstood Socialism/Communism. Go find some books/sites on the matter, and notice that they were born out of the lower classes, those who worked the most but gained the least. The basic idea is not to give everything for free to everyone, but give everyone what they really deserved for their work instead of giving much to some and little to many.

We should chose by IQ, not age.
IQ is by no mean a true measure of "intelligence". And even if it was, I think that wisdom is the stat you need to look for.

Many just want to be contraversial. Some are racists and others think they are a good party. I suppose thats true for many adults too though.
Still, lowering the voting age and electoral reform in general are two things best left buried for now

the thing about 16 years old, well, here in Mexico, is that a lot of young guys are left-side, or communists, socialists, some other things like that, because they dont "grasp" the real needs of a nation, as a nation, they think everyone should earn the same, and be the same, but are biased because they dont earn or are anything, once 18 (at least in most cases) they learn what it costs to earn a buck, and what it means to "sustain" one self, in my experience i became capitalist once i started working and experienced some things, and now i am more in touch with what i do and what i need, and what the people in my nation needs, and if i ask a teen-age for whom he would vote, he would say "i dunno" or even worst "for that guy that wants to make everything free and give money to the poor and the needy, and bla bla socialist crap"

if you know what i am talking about, great!!! if not, just think about "el che guevara", "Zapata", or "Fidel Castro" and you have the roll models of our youth (at least here in Mexico) something wich is dangerous in a lot of ways.
the problem sometimes is with extreme left wing politics it can sometimes leave people feeling very unmotivated because theirs no competition

with me, I really like the 18, or 20.

Mostly for a few reasons that are alittle fresh in my head, and I KNOW kids in the latter teen years are bright, hell the memories of those days are still fresh in my mind..but with that memory comes the realization of this..

I understood politics at 16, I understood at 18....I was full of ideas on how things should be done, and with a just, moral mind...I was one who could see what we needed to do for changing things for the better!!!!....I REALLY did'nt understand what is realistic, and whats not, the timetable somethings took, what votes really did ( or how that whole game is actually pretty shady on all sides) and how the slightest thing affects an individual or a group until I was out and alone, and fully vulnurable.

there is not that " buffer zone" of still living with parents, and not putting yourself through school yourself...and being away from a solid reminder or ( in some cases) attempted indoctrination, be it family or schools, forces you to REALLY take a harder, deeper look at things than you originally did.

Now... I would like to see kids 16, 17 be able to vote on a city, or perhaps even state/country level..but not federal until 18.

I suppose that he wants to show that most of the peoply that are suggesting to lower the age to 16 are either just under that age, or under 18, and as such they are biased. Obviously the same applies to those who are over 18 and don't think it should be lowered.

i actually do understand what Socialism is, i am just stating what our youth actually believes to be Socialism, with those words i used to express myself, the "bias" i was talking about is exactly that, not having to work for anyting, getting free money from the gov, or other crap like that, not knowing how things work and how to mantain a house, how could the even begin to understand the manteinance of a country?

Agreed. I'm not sure what all this 'Lets vote at 16' crap is about. I'm 18 now and can tell you that most people a few years older than me aren't experienced enough to vote, much less those under me.

I really like this idea of slowly introducing teens to politics. This, mixed with education on rational thought and politics, would be a good idea, I think.
