Lowering the voting age to 16 is foolish. At least till the government realise that atudents need political education before 16.
At 16, in my opinion based on my experience of people i have met, most people are not mature enough to be trusted. The amount of retarded 16/17 year olds i know who say vote bnp and so on.
People need to be less ignorant and more mature before the voting age can be lowered to 16
I totally agree. People need to be taught to think rationally, and for themselves, before they get the right to vote. Unfortunately, society still thinks belief without evidence is a virtue. Yes, that's a mild dig at religion, but I'm annoyed that it's working its way back into politics.

16. You can do everything (almost) including JOIN THE ARMY, but you cannot vote. You can fight for your country, but have no say in who runs it. I think that's a baaaaad thing.

quite but lets just say religion and politics should never mix and be done with that otherwise we might start something which wont finish or finish reasonably

You should only be able to vote once you pay full taxes.

If you contribute to the country, then you have the right to decide how it's run.
If you're paying taxes, then you're more likely to have a political interest.
If you don't then you're voting on pure influence.

18 it is.

Yeah, probably sending teenagers to war is not a bright idea either. In facts, I don't know how the British Army works, but I doubt that underage are sent abroad on the military, much less so in a real conflict. At least I wouldn't, war is a mess, and people who go make it should be capable of handling it. Which is probably impossible for anyone...

I didn't say all teens. I know a few who are well informed but the majority are just plain ignorant and immature. Fortunately, i come from a fairly retarded and ignorant area that doesn't represent all of the UK. Hopefully there are more of the educated kind out there but i doubt it
And you're argument about joining the army at 16, you can join at 16 but legally you cannot be put in a combat situation until you are 18

I think 16 would be a reasonable age. Someone raised the point of being able to have a family, pay taxes and whatnot, but at the same time are also able to be tried as an adult for crimes (this removing the criteria for voting altogether in some countries)

16 would probably be the ideal age, because thats still back when kids are young and idealistic enough to find politics possibly interesting, giving them the oppourtunity to put their hand into the democratic process. I started voting as soon as I was able (18 here) and haven't missed one national, provincial, or even municipal election since.

Not that it made a difference nationally .... Harper still won :(

18 and I think being an adult, driving, drinking and voting should all be the same age.

The problem with sixteens' is exactly that idealism (and may I add, naiveté): young people tend to be more passionate than wise, and as a proof of this during my high school years I've seen many people going for extremist ideologies (which in Italy means either full right-wing, Fascist parties, to full left-wing, Communist parties) without any real justification except that it was, effectively, a trend, and even switching between opposite positions.
It takes time to understand that politics is subtle, and that many parties look one way and act another.

the thing about 16 years old, well, here in Mexico, is that a lot of young guys are left-side, or communists, socialists, some other things like that, because they dont "grasp" the real needs of a nation, as a nation, they think everyone should earn the same, and be the same, but are biased because they dont earn or are anything, once 18 (at least in most cases) they learn what it costs to earn a buck, and what it means to "sustain" one self, in my experience i became capitalist once i started working and experienced some things, and now i am more in touch with what i do and what i need, and what the people in my nation needs, and if i ask a teen-age for whom he would vote, he would say "i dunno" or even worst "for that guy that wants to make everything free and give money to the poor and the needy, and bla bla socialist crap"

if you know what i am talking about, great!!! if not, just think about "el che guevara", "Zapata", or "Fidel Castro" and you have the roll models of our youth (at least here in Mexico) something wich is dangerous in a lot of ways.
