defining the rules of such a test would either very lax or very complex ultimately very hard to define you have to allow people to vote who have contributed to society in some wayGlerken said:I'd rather you had to take a test to be able to vote.
Not an age limit.
I would argue that those who do give blood and raise a family are quite the minority amongst their age group, and the majority continues to be whiny arrogant self-important nutcases who should not have an opinion that gets heard by large amounts of people. In fact that's my biggest problem with the internet.Pezzer said:I've recently become angered by the fact that 16 - 17 year olds are unable to vote in Britain and America. They are able to give blood, raise a family (in Britain) and pay taxes but they cannot vote.
You're opinions?
A test to assess how aware of current politics you are may not be a bad idea, but compulsory voting, and a fine if then aren't able to vote? That's stupid.riskroWe said:For people over 25 registration is mandatory, and thus voting is completely optional until you turn 25. People over 25 who cannot complete the test will be fined, in the same manner as if they incorrectly filled out their voting pamphlet.
Giving teenagers the right to vote means the education system won't be left to the mercy of concerned parents.

Exactly! And the minute you do that you undermine democracy and the whole thing becomes pointless...I was just thinking out loud...murphy7801 said:the problem is who decides and how do decide its nice idea in principled in execution it falls to piecescarnkhan4 said:Hmm...ideally it would be a different age depending on the person...
I knew some people who aged 14 were incredibly well-informed and should have been able to vote, but I also know some 20 year olds who seem to have very simplistic views of the world. Somewhere between 16 and 18 seems about the right balance...
I know another famous physicist that would have made that funnier, although I fear it's a bit of a low blow to actually mention him. You know who I mean.murphy7801 said:Albert Einstein had problems dressing himselfdreadmaster said:at my school over 2/3 of the dipshits are unable to even dress themselvs so i think you should have to take some kind of test and if you pass it you would be able to vote or some other kind of show of intelligence (note i am 15)
There is a difference between repeating what your parents say, and being well informed. Most people at that age only know what is told to them by their parents and their teachers as far as presidential candidates are concerned, both of which are probably fairly biased. Letting these people vote would not improve the voting process in any way, shape or form.carnkhan4 said:Hmm...ideally it would be a different age depending on the person...

But there are responsible people living in apartments. Seems like that would shut out a lot of people from voting. And what about the people who live in a house they pay for, but it's under someone else's name? Say for instance, a spouse?Raregolddragon said:I like the original rules on voting you had to own at least some amount of land.
That way your really have a state in the state.
Same here. You can have a fifty-year-old clinically retarded Alzheimer's sufferer who can't dress himself, who can still cast a vote for president or prime minister...where's the sense in that?slevin8989 said:I think that instead of an age limit maybe an intelligence limit would be better.
how would be able to vote think the physicality of that thoughHT_Black said:Same here. Sorry to hear about losing your post; I was looking forward to an in-depth reply. Just remember to keep a copy of your post next time, I guess. You won't stop the parties putting out their propaganda. Even if you can get them not to lie(no chance), they still need to make their party sound better. Children are more affected by propaganda; it's an evolutionary trait. We do as authority figures say, because obviously they know best, right? Who's more authoritative than the people running the country?A random person said:Slightly more text.BardSeed said:Moar text!A random person said:More text.BardSeed said:Text.

This would just make the class divide even greater.Raregolddragon said:I like the original rules on voting you had to own at least some amount of land.

so im agreeing with you should quoted for my last commentEMFCRACKSHOT said:Lowering the voting age to 16 is foolish. At least till the government realise that atudents need political education before 16.
At 16, in my opinion based on my experience of people i have met, most people are not mature enough to be trusted. The amount of retarded 16/17 year olds i know who say vote bnp and so on.
People need to be less ignorant and more mature before the voting age can be lowered to 16
