I choose the Chaos Marine legion whose battle cry is still "For the Emperor!"
Good ol' Alpha Legion, sneaky bastards that they are.

Dark Eldar. Let the Craftworld cowards run and hide from their true nature. We may be crashing and burning, but at least we're having a hell of a time on the way down.
What exactly are the differences between Eldar and "Dark" Eldar? My knowledge of the Eldar race is kinda limited.
A long time ago the Eldar ruled the galaxy, and they were massive dicks. They were pretty much all-powerful and their Gods protected them, so they just messed around all day doing what they did best, and what they did best was having massive orgies of sex, violence, and art. Things were all good and well for a while, but these centuries of depravity coalesced in the Warp, eventually causing the birth of the Chaos God Slaanesh, lord of Excess. Newborn Slaanesh was hungry, and claimed the souls of all Eldar for his breakfast. In time, most of the Eldar Gods were slain by the Chaos Gods (the C'tan had a hand in this as well, IIRC). Kaela Mensha Khaine was shattered, Isha was enslaved by Nurgle, etc. Unless I'm mistaken, only Cegorach escpaped, being the god of tricksters and all.

Anyway, some of the Eldar saw this coming just in time and fled. They left the Eldar homeworlds in giant artificial planets called Craftworlds and forever swore off everything that the original Eldar loved so much in an attempt to escape Slaanesh' attention. Basically they're not allowed to have fun, ever. They also crafted the Soulstones, which would trap their soul after they died, so Slaanesh wouldn't be able to claim it. Pretty much everything they do is aimed at their continued survival, and trying to stay as far away from Slaanesh as possible. These Craftworld Eldar are the Eldar of 40k.

The Dark Eldar told the Craftworlders to stick it where the alien suns don't shine when they tried to warn everyone about Slaanesh' coming, and were almost annihilated when the Eldar empire fell. The few survivors retreated into the Webway (which is pretty much a 'world between worlds' used by the Eldar as a means of instant transportation), and built a giant city there, called Commorragh. These 'Dark' Eldar refused to surrender their ways of life, even if it means that they are doomed to have their souls devoured by Slaanesh when they die. In stead of hiding themselves like the Craftworlders, they chose to hold on to everything that made them what they were, and thus to everything that led to their downfall. So basically they know they're in deep shit, but they refuse to give in to fear and give up their messy fun. It could be said that the Dark Eldar are the 'real' Eldar: The Eldar as they were before the Fall.

There are at least two other (minor) groups among the Eldar: First are the Harlequins, servants of Cegorach, the laughing God. While they're more or less allied with the Craftworld Eldar, they are still protected by their God and thus don't need to fear for their souls as much as the rest. It doesn't mean that Slaanesh isn't after them, just that once in a while Cegorach will drop by and kick Slaanesh' teeth in to keep him from stealing a particularly valuable soul.

Then there are the Eldar Exodites. I'll admit that I don't know anything about them, apart from that they too fled the Eldar Empire. In stead of joining the Craftworlders, they settled new, savage planets. They're pretty cool and ride around on dinosaurs or whatever, but there's not really enough of them to do anything worthwhile, and they tend to lay low and mind their own business most of the time.

Massive amount of info.
Well thank you very much for typing all that out, that really filled in a ton of blanks I had about both factions of the Eldar. :D

What exactly are the differences between Eldar and "Dark" Eldar? My knowledge of the Eldar race is kinda limited.
Once upon a time, the Eldar were undeclared masters of the galaxy. Then they grew bored. They began to create extraordinary works of art, but when you have a dozen Michelangelos, Bachs and Salvador Dalis living simultaneously and the lifespan of each eldar is measured in millenia, they quickly explored traditional art to all conclusions and grew bored again.

They switched to sex, drugs and violence as new forms of art. And as their excesses grew and grew, the Warp resonated with all the negative energy they were pumping into it by their feelings. Eventually Slaanesh, the one known as the fourth Chaos God was born from the excesses of sex, drugs and RockNRoll put to the tenth power by the Eldar. He quickly killed off the majority of the Eldar race to fuel his acesion into true godhood.

The Eldar have never been the same since, a waning race stripped from power and glory. The Eldar of the Craftworlds are those who think they should take at least some modicum of responsibility for their actions back then, and fight Chaos just as they fight to survive themselves. They are by no means good guys; an eldar will sacrifice in a heartbeat entire colonies regardless of race for as long as it results in even a single Eldar life saved.

The Dark Eldar are their more twisted brothers, by choice stuck on the loop that torture makes for great music and the tears of virgins mixed blood of babies is the finest wine. They scour the space for victims, raiding planets and outposts for resources and victims and plain good old fun of slaughter and carnage of war.

Tau, every other race is either decaying, or causing the decay. They are the race that could survive and start the peaceful organised community.

Also, i love duels against the eldar god-thingy, (avatar or something?) , the finishing moves with both of them are epic.
The problem with the Avatar is the fact that 150 flashlight lasgun shots will likely bring him down. My bro plays the imp guard, and he has learned to keep his squad of 50 conscripts in front of his tank. When the Avatar comes near, he uses a command for an extra shot, and my avatar falls. Drives me insane. Statistically, I should have one wound left after that barrage, but statistics are never precise.
Didn't know you could take him down so fast...but hey, that's why i chose chaos. The Prince has more hp and more damage too (at least i think he has).

Also, i when i played the game for the first time, i fell in love with the finishing moves, even casual solders can do them...and bosses against commanders, etc... soooo awesome. Gotta love warhammer 40, 000.
But I have never played warhammer 2, is it much better , anyone ?
Well its more focused on the squads themselves and a smaller battlefield in general, but overall its the same experience with more complexity [wargear-wise] and no base building

EDIT: and finishing moves are still there, although i miss them a lot because i don't use that many melee units
No basebuilding? well that's not very fun :(

Tough i do like to sound of complexity. But wow, i posted on this thread a long time a go. Did not expect someone to be quoted from a post this old.

Anyways, i still love warhammer, it is a great game.
TBH just watch a couple of reviews about it, maybe some gameplay, and make a decision, for me it was a must-buy since i'm a big fan of Relics RTS'es

Ogre Kingdoms
For the love of god man why?.

I mean sure an Ogre army looks great on the table, but their small unit sizes basically means everyone gets to unzip and piss on them when combat resolution comes around.
I always go with my gut instinct, because otherwise I might be winning (or doing well it whatever I do (not just Warhammer)), but I'll have regrets and I'll keep thinking over what I REALLY wanted to do

Also, the fact I go with "gut" instinct indicates my association with the stomach-driven kingdoms of the Ogres

And for some reason, that's a ten times cooler battlecry than "Death to the false Emperor!" :)

I like Chaos and Space Marine. I'm a Space Wolves player myself.

I voted Space Marines, but that just doesn't do it justice. We're Space Wolves, Masters of the Fang, Warriors of Russ!

But yeah, the Dark Angels chapter of the space marines take shit from no-one, have a badass first-company and wear friggin' robes.
Sir, will you join me in my hunt for our Fallen brethren?

That wasn't a question. You WILL join me, or I'll have you executed for heresy.

In all seriousness, the Dark Angels are the best Chapter. There's so much mystery about them that just makes them better than the rest.

Ironically, if you're an instinct driven player, Ogres are really really not your army, because they require so much fiddling to get the flanking moves out of the nobblers (get that and the Ogres' tendency to be horribly outnumbered and lacking in ranks due to being massively expensive goes away).

Their biggest advantage is they're strong on the charge, but if your opponent can just put some weaky crap in their way, then they've got to spend time breaking that, and if it's horde stuff they have to really work at it to overcome their disadvantage in ranks and numbers, and because they only move 5" not 6" even if they do with combat resolution they get a 2D6 pursuit not 3D6, so they're not guaranteed an overrun (Ironically this means that despite the apparent power disparity, gobbos are the Ogres' worst nightmare, because the average gobbo regiment will be so damn numerous that no matter how many casualties you cause in combat he's still one or two up on you in combat resolution.

I love Dark Angels, but since the current codex doesn't stand with the newer ones, I play Tyranid.
