When you get a new fantasy RPG, which archetype do you typically play first (or exclusively if you hate the others)?

For me, I can only play tanks. I'm always terrible at playing mages, be it diablo, DA:O, anything.

I usually go for the warrior character. Sure, I can play rogue or mage, but I prefer being up close in heavy armor, killing my enemies with big weapons. Especially axes. Nothing like dual wielding big freaking axes á la Diablo 2's barbarian.

I like using a sword to destroy things, but I've often found that magic is among my favorite, especially when it comes to necros...

So a tie between Warrior and Rogue, depending on the benefits that come with it. I'm leaning a bit more to warrior, though.

I don't like warriors, I don't like rogues, I don't like mages. What I would like though is something between warrior and rogue. Weird?

I usually try to make a mix class, for example my Melee mage in Diablo II capable of over 10k fire damage ranged and 40k on hit note this isn't a very big diablo number when compensating for resistances so it had to mana tank alot of the time...

Although I do prefer a paladin style class getting up close with decent armor stack and the ability to punch hard magically or physically with an ability to heal a great all rounder.

However I prefer a warrior by far in most situations mages just seem way too spongy and rogues although good rely too much on their speed rather than armor or any tanking.

Rogue, usually either an Assassin or Archer/Ranger. It's been my preference in MMO's and RPG's for a while. I sometimes play Warrior, but I think plate armor looks retarded for the most part and they're usually slow hitting boring bastards that (in MMO's) are forced to sit there letting everything hit them. Mages can be fun, but I don't really like cast bars and the whole magician thing they've got going on.. so yeah, Rogue.

Rogue yeaaah.

Although I normally restart about 30 minutes later as a fighter when I remember I'm about as subtle as a brick.

Depends on the game, but mostly Rogues unless the mage characters are suitably impressive. Rogues for my backstabbing stealth needs and mage for powertrips

I prefer things that are a Mage/Warrior Hybrid. Like Herald of Xotli from Age of Conan, or Paladins/Crusaders.

The herald of zotli is basically a "Battle Mage", ultimate strength and magic but can't take much damage.

Then I also like the slightly more defensive hybrid like a paladin which is more of a magic warrior, instead of a warrior mage. Retribution paladins from WoW I liked (I quit before they were finally fixed though), as well as AoE grinding in the protection spec. Then there's Crusader/Paladin from Ragnarok with the awesome skill Grand Cross.

Probably on first playthrough fo something I'll play the mage, unless there's a hybrid available, in which case that's always the one

In my younger days, I would almost always want to become a warrior. Recently however, I've been leaning more to being a mage. I find all the spells you can learn much better than raw power. Spells just accommodate for more situations.

However, if there was an option to become a warrior/mage mix, then I would happily pick that option. Best of both worlds in my opinion.

Don't know why, but I just never really got into the whole Rogue class. Maybe because I don't like being all sneaky.

A warrior first. I don't usually play mages or rogues because I die too easily, and I like being in the forefront a bit too much.

Warrior.
Rogues have to screw around with stealth, flanking the enemy and crap like poisons.
Mages have to worry about mana and what resistences the enemy has.
Warriors are easy, swing big sharp chunk of iron at enemy and try to rip their nipples off.
Personally I prefer the stealth side, there's less risk, and against other players it's funny watching their chat: "OMG fkn haxz0r sh1tb@g!1!!!1!" (This was quoted from a real game, though to be honest I didn't write down which one - just the quote itself)
Though I suppose I can see where people come from in the "rip their nipples off" direction :)
