I love playing stealth based characters, so I usually go with the rogue. In Dragon Age, though I'm playing a dwarf warrior.

it really depends on the game, i usually just go for warrior, because the stealth in RPGs very good (with the exception of the Thief series), and with most games, casting spells is a real waste of time, with cooldowns, cast times, and having to constantly select the spell you wanted to use.

Anyone remember dungeon siege 2? that was the only game where i bothered to play as a mage, because it was simple, just select your spell, and your character continually casts it automatically, it was pretty much like using a sword, just right click to attack and he handled the rest...

I'm surprised at how many mages there are. I always use mages on the second or third playthroughs, if the game deserves such. I like mages, but warriors are much more my thing. Particularly the barbarian types with the big two-handers. Carnage is fun.

When you get a new fantasy RPG, which archetype do you typically play first (or exclusively if you hate the others)?

For me, I can only play tanks. I'm always terrible at playing mages, be it diablo, DA:O, anything.
I tend to be a Jack-of-all-trade. You know, like a mix between the following class from Final Fantasy 5: Redmage, Warrior and ninja.

I use speed to hit the enemies a few time more than they can hit me usually trying to double wield if possible. (Ninja) I wear medium to Heavy armor but make sure it don't negate to much my speed(Warrior) and i use spell to beat range attacker making sure i got some Healing spell in case stuff turn to "shite" (redmage)

Warrior. I will always be the giant truck that walks like a man, swinging a sword that will surely attract Freudian remarks (To which I will say it's just advertising) and shooting fireballs that will burn you to the ground as I laugh at your puny attempts to put out the flames.

Iron door? cut it down. Trap? jump over it with muscles the size of oil drums or cut it down. Mage in the way? Cut it down.
Monster?
You guessed it.
Give it flowers.
[HEADING=1]AND THEN CUT IT DOWN!!![/HEADING]

[sup]weren't expecting that one, were you?[/sup]
I remember my old warrior Brynan... RIP buddy, you couldn't have save yourself for a HORDE full of monster... But i love how you think Xeno!

Well, in Dragon Age, I played as a warrior (Human Noble) the first time.
I may play it again as a mage.

So, yeah, I usually play as a warrior the first time.

Mages are awesome. Kill people with the elements, summon demons and undead. My first Dragon Age character was a mage. I went with lightning spells as my main method of attack, so I was basically like Emperor Palpatine, only not as old and with a goatee. The only time I don't like being a mage exclusively is when I'm playing Elder Scrolls. Then I'm always a magic/stealth hybrid.

Rogue is what I like to be. The unique skills, the sneaking around, and all that indirect skills stuff is what I like to have.

Being able to pick locks, sneak around, and do whatever is just a fun time for me.

I like wearing a thick armor and fighting with ridiculous huge weapons through hordes of enemies.

I'm also fond of the highly skilled samurai-type.

Rogue.
Rogues get all kinds of tail.
Case in point, Capt. Jack Sparrow.
Also, PIRATES!

I personally prefer a mage-warrior hybrid. Typically using my spells to have absolutely ridiculous power. An arcane warrior or battlemage, so to speak. It combines the versatility of mage powers (buff self, debuff foe, heal self, damage foes, inflict status effects, so on...) with the raw damage potential and toughness of a fighter.

It's great fun.

usually a rogue, i have an OCD for opening all and every door/chest that i visually see, and being a rogue satisfies that, plus i love doing duel wield with smaller swords, so rogue is usually win for me

although occasionally ill hyprid with mage if at all possible for a speed/defense boost magic types, if thats possible.

Shadowhumper, sometimes a Peacekiller but normally before a Shadowhumper and certainly before a Garrotnutkalf.

I'm a ninja, but failing that I like mages, because theres so many types you have:

Arcane mages
Tech mages
Ice mages
Fire mages
Geomancer/Earth mage
Necromancer
Storm mage
Time mage
Light mage/Priest
Dark mage
Druid
Rune mage
Warlock
e.t.c

whiles't Rogues are too fragile for me and I find Warriors to be too stock and kinda like a Vanilla Ice (one hit wonder) they are either tank or dps, and tanks don't deal enough damage to survive, whiles't DPS doesn't have enough HP or Armour to survive making them essentially a Rogue that takes less damage and deals less.

Mages on the other hand, are essential for heals, nukes+debuffs help them and are just general badasses

I'm a rouge all the way.

Doesn't matter how powerful you are, what skills you know, how popular you are.....your still gonna be a jibbering little ***** on the floor when I backstab you with a poisoned dagger leaving you crippled and paralysed without you even knowing I was there to begin with.

You know why no one makes fun of a rouge in game?

Because those guys are now lying on the floor in a puddle of their own poisoned blood with a very sharp dagger sticking out of their backs.

i like mages becaus ethey usually have diversity with theyre long range and group attacks
if by rouge you mean an archer and light weapon type thing then they're usually not bad either
