Trough experience I've learned that being a mage always results in pure win, all of the time.
Wow gives them the most badass sets and armors and almost the most varied play style.
Dungeon party gives them the most overpowered spells and Flyff gives them everything mentioned before.

And i love the fact that you can pop fireballs out of your as all the time.

I usually go with the tank, the warrior, but I often switch over to the rogue just for sake of variety. Plus, rogues are pretty cool. I really hate magic though, too much to manage, plus your mana, and you can't take much damage.

Its a tie between a rogues and a mage, though personally I like to try to mix all three, like a stealty assassin with two short swords that can cast magic and hold his own in a one on one fight.

Rogue, typically an Archer or sometimes an assassin depending on game. If it's a game like Baldur's Gate, I like to keep my main hero away from hazards. If it's a different game that involves me being by myself. I just enjoy picking a target and watching them crumble before they even know what hit them.

That is all.
You do realize that Conan was more of a rogue type than he was a fighter class right? I believe he later on became a fighter class.

I don't suppose I can pick a combination of the three? I love all styles, being a sneaky assassin, an impervious axe-wielding tank or a nuke in human form.

Warrior, something about being a big stompy brute turning my foes to paste (a la fallout 3) appeals to me more than hurling fire or becoming fear itself. (or more frequently, a prick with a bow and lockpick.) If done properly, as said above, rogues would be made nearly useless by warriors and mages. Locks can (or should) be smashed/blasted open, (or opened with an "open" spell) traps would probably be absorbable by a meatshield (warrior or mage's summoned minion) or set off by a spell, say, strong winds?) In subtlety, however, I think a warrior's SOL and A mage might make himself invisible, but only big boss can make himself silent as far as I know.

I check the reviews and stats.

If the stealth is good (not passable, but actually good), I'll play rogue. Above that, I'll play whichever class gets dual weapons.

If neither of the above apply, then I play as a mage.

Rogue (with a warrior mix-in so he doesn't crumble). Then mage. Vanilla warriors aren't my thing really.

Mage. Even though I don't play WRPG's (unless you count Fallout). I just like the idea of being able to shoot fire from you hands. :D

Rogue/thief.

I always hate playing as a mage and warriors are boring. Plus, the game is always a little harder (and a little more fun) when you have to rely on the shadows and only have a knife or a bow rather than a sword or staff.

Magic is just cool, so usually mage, but it depends on the game. For example, the magic system in Oblivion is decent, but the AI is geared heavily towards fighters, so you have to either run backwards, or take some blade and block.

Or D&D based games, depending on how they are implemented can make being a magic user tedious, since you have to rest to regain your spells. I'm playing a Pathfinder (essentially D&D 3.5) campaign right now, with a Sorcerer, and the limited spells actually add some tactics, without being annoying, since you can handwave going to rest. But in Planescape: Torment, for example, I played as a mage, but there are very few places you can rest (without the Rest-Anywhere mod).

I'm playing Baldur's Gate right now as a Ranger, and enjoying that, though I think you can actually rest anywhere by default in BG. Plus, since you have a party, you can still play with magic a recruitable character.

I think I'll let Vaarsuvius explain this one.

Oh, wait, sorry, he/she's busy. When I asked, he/she said "I am somewhat preocupied with telling the laws of physics to shut up and sit down."

Seriously, the effects are fun and it's always nice to have valid descriptions of former enemies be "dust pile" or "black smudge" or, my personal favourite, "greasy spot on the floor."
